Brilliant Collection of New Translations of the Official and Some Unofficial Gospels

The Jesus Seminar's excellent work on the life of Jesus the Christ has been published before in the far larger and more analytical work, "The Five Gospels". But it also does its more academic forerunner one better by including not only the in-vogue Gospel of Thomas, and the sayings Gospel, "Q", but also a number of other non-canonical (i.e., unsanctioned) books which were contemporaneous with the books that WERE accepted into the official final canon.
Highly readable, these completely new translations avoid the ecclesiastical influence that has rendered other translations less useful. These are truly contemporary translations of some of the most sacred literature in the world.
If you are a serious Bible student who's not bound by millennia-old decisions about what should be considered holy and what isn't, you will find many, many deepening insights into the depth and meaning of the life of Jesus the Christ. If you have a more literalist, fundamentalist view of the Bible, perhaps your time and money would best be invested elsewhere.
For me, this is brilliant. Highly recommended.

Amazing

This is an incredible find for anyone interested in the early church and early ideas that fed into the development of christianity and gnostic traditions. The translation is excellent - the book is worth it for this alone - it is an extremely readable and accurate translation of all the the gospels. In addition, the authors' have done an excellent job of contextualizing the different gospels both historically and in relation to each other. This is just an amazing volume that I cherish as someone who is interested in the early Christian movement. I give this volume a very strong endorsement.
