A provocative and visually stimluating planning tool

Each year I share with my clients and friends a book that I believe will provoke their thinking in some way.

Shortly after Thanksgiving last year I found myself in a Starbucks Café with a steaming Americano on my table and seated next to a display of dark chocolate and merchandise. I had a 30-minute wait till my appointment arrived, so I began to page through the book titled, "5." It's a tool for planning your life five years out, filled with thought-provoking activities. Yet even when I ignored the exercises, I decided, it's a good, fun read!

I found the layout stimulating, the questions quite provocative, and the value high. So high, in fact, that I talked a Starbucks manager into ordering me a full case of these (50) for exclusive distribution to my client base.

They loved the book! I received dozens of notes from clients who dug into the exercises and were having a wonderful time discovering their future. A few confessed they had no energy to plan the future, but when they started reading the book they felt so inspired by the layout and the powerful questions that they found themselves engaged despite them selves.

I also had a lot of requests re: Where can I get a copy? Until very recently (end of month Jan 09) the book was not available except thru Starbucks, and they were sold out. I'm thrilled it's now available thru AZN.

My wife and I used two copies of this book to do our annual Planning Retreat, where we set aside an entire day to review the past year and then look ahead to the next. This book, 5, challenged us to look even further ahead.

It's not a breakthrough book, and it's filled with a lot of quotes and readings that self-improvement junkies will have already seen before. But the presentation is so much fun; and the arrangement of activities keeps one moving thru the planning/vision process.

Bottom line, it's a pretty joyful planning tool. I highly recommend this for those who get stuck in planning their life, and especially those who appreciate visual presentation.

Moriah's Mutiny is a story of true bound breaking love.

This book is a great romance novel. It was my first and was definitely not my last. The characters were well thought out and easily related to. Elisabeth Bevarly has yet another fan of her work because after reading about Moriah I was eager to seek out novels. Moriah was a very beautiful woman who had spent her life in the shadow of her beautiful successful sisters. When they plan a holiday cruise through tropical islands, Moriah arrives early to spend some time to herself and prepare for the down set of being in her sisters shadows. She has to be untangle from a sticky situation by a man that sees the side of her that no one before had chosen to view. Now that is what true romance is about and to see that there was no barriers that she could hide from him, enriched the book even more. This is a great story for romance beginners because as I said before it is well thought out and easily related to.

Moriah or Cinderella?

I enjoyed this book, particularly when she stands up to her sisters.
However, it seems to follow too closely the story of Cinderella, minus the wicked stepmother. Pushed around, bossed around, put down by her sisters. That kind of thing.
What makes this story fundamentally diffferent, though, is that she tells her sisters what's what, finally, close to the end. Cinderella never did have much gumption, did she?!

Wanda Curlee, DM, PMP, PgMP, PMI-RMP, also a veteran of establishing and running virtual project management offices, is currently a senior manager at a major consulting firm. She is a program management leader experienced in global markets, government projects, and highly complex IT, information systems, and managed services projects. She is also an adjunct instructor for Northcentral University and Kaplan University, facilitating online doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate courses in project management, critical thinking, and strategic management.

This entertaining history of his crusade to turn New England into the world's ice-maker shows how the combination of technological innovation and sharp marketing—Tudor trained bartenders to use ice in cocktails in order to illustrate the virtues of cold drinks—created an industry that sold thousands of tons of ice a year to places like India, Cuba, and the American South. As a case study of the entrepreneurial mind, Weightman's book reminds us that creating demand can be as important as meeting it.

A century ago, home ice delivery was a huge business, an emulation, according to Weightman's history, of the concepts and organization of one pioneering entrepreneur, Frederic Tudor. Around 1805 the idea occurred to him that there was money to be made shipping ice from Boston to the tropics--provided ice could be shipped, stored, and distributed without too much melting. Working from Tudor's business books, his diary, and newspaper accounts, Weightman synthesizes the story of how Tudor solved the technical problems, undaunted by the financial failure of his first few shipments. Persevering, Tudor's obstinate belief that the sweltering denizens of Charleston, New Orleans, Havana, and Calcutta would pay for a cool cocktail or ice cream was vindicated; he died a wealthy man in 1864. By then, the ponds near Boston from which Tudor cut his ice, including Walden Pond (to the annoyance of Thoreau), had become crowded with the infrastructure of ice harvesting--of which nary a trace remains today. Curiosity about the vanished ice industry energizes Weightman's narrative, a pleasing reminder of a forgotten but once-ubiquitous business. Gilbert Taylor

Now we know who to thank when we take cold drinks for granted

We live in a time and place in which we can have ice cold drinks even on the hottest days in the hottest parts of the country. But before anyone could to take this for granted, individuals had to first discover how to bring ice to parts of the country that weren't cold. The Frozen Water Trade is an exciting tale of an entrepreneur who took a gigantic step in making this possible—it is the story of Frederick Tudor, the “ice king.”

The idea of an ice business was initially derided by a parade of seemingly endless critics who laughed as if Tudor did not understand that his ice—and his profits—would melt if he did not take proper precautions. But he gradually proved the viability of his business. He established an extensive network of ice houses to improve the efficiency of his distribution and so he could stock up on ice in the winter and deliver it quickly in the summer. He wrapped his ice in cloth and packed it in sawdust to reduce loss from melting. He discovered that his ice would last much longer in his warehouses if he kept it elevated on a grate, so that runoff would pool on the floor rather than around the ice. And he commissioned new tools such as an ice plow so that he could harvest ice much faster.

Tudor certainly had many challenges to come beyond the obvious problem of melting. He had to educate his customers on how to properly transport ice, lest they pick up their ice without anything to wrap it in and get frustrated as their new purchase melts away during their trip home.
Tudor also had to deal with many property rights disputes. After searching far and wide to find the best lakes for harvesting ice—lakes that had a plentiful amount of thick ice and were easily accessible by roads so that he could park his wagons right next to them—Tudor would find himself racing to harvest the ice against competitors who took advantage of these locations after he went through the effort of finding them.

Tudor's ice business helped pave the way for many modern conveniences. Thanks to him, landlords were soon able to cool down sweltering theaters, churches, and other crowded indoor spaces by utilizing large blocks of ice. Americans were able to enjoy comforts like ice cream and cold drinks in the summer. Refrigeration and ice boxes soon became a reality, eventually enabling meatpacking industrialists such as Gustavus Swift and Philip Armour to bring beef and pork to the masses.

I only recently learned about Tudor thanks to a Boston Globe article that I saw floating around Facebook, but I am glad that I did. I am also happy that Gavin Weightman tells his story in such an engaging way.

The Entrepeneurship Bible

The Frozen Water Trade was recommended to me by a family member, and I must admit, I was first hesitant to purchase the book. "I'm going to read a book about shipping blocks of ice?". My first observation was that the book is a fairly easy read but not at the expense of substance. It chronicles the life of Frederick Tudor, the Ice King, who essentially invented an entire industry out of thin air. The book has valuable lessons about perserverence, business instinct and partnerships, and the idea that consumer behavior and tastes are fickle. Finally, it really shows that industries come and go, but the men who build them are strikingly similar throughout time. Moreover, it's just a really interesting history of an industry we now take for granted, but was once one of the most thriving businesses in the nation.

The page-turning story of one man's human struggle to turn idle lake ice into a thriving industry.

This book tells the magnificent story of Frederic Tudor, the Boston Ice King. First and foremost, this is the story of one man's determination to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds and prove all of his doubters wrong. The book is a success largely because of the great character Mr. Tudor was. At times he seemed as hard nosed as Daniel Day Lewis's character in There Will Be Blood. At other times he seemed like a proud son hoping against hope to restore honor to his family name.

Moreover, the book is filled with little historical tidbits that should be of interest to scholars, lawyers, economists, social scientists, and aspiring entrepreneurs. The book spans nearly 150 years, including run-ins with Caribbean pirates, corrupt politicians, Henry David Thoreau, and even Queen Victoria. I found the unique system of ice-harvesting property rights that evolved around the business (and were eventually memorialized in writing by a Harvard Law professor in 1841) to be particularly interesting. I was also amused by the cutthroat competition that was indicative of the ice trade in the early 1900s, around its peak. The sheer quantity of direct quotes from primary sources is impressive.

I will never look at a cup of iced water (or a mint julep for that matter) the same way again.

A great way resource for teaching kids about money

I got this to teach my kids about budgeting and saving on their level as part of our homeschool curriculum. The primary learners I was targeting were my 7, 9, and 13 year olds. The book does a great job of explaining concepts, laying out a plan, and giving advice about topics including earning money, getting a job, and budgeting. A lot of the material is beyond the needs of my younger two, but everyone has been interested in the book, and we can always reread it in a few years. My favorite thing about it is the graphic presentation of the material. I also like the emphasis on saving. My husband and I used Dave Ramsey to get out of debt several years ago, and since then I have wanted to do some economic education with the kids. This isn't affiliated with Dave Ramsey at all, but it has similar principals, and it fit the bill for me.

One caveat: It may give your kids ideas. For example, early on in the book a sidebar told a story of a boy who saved up to buy a dirt bike, which is EXACTLY what my 13 year old wants to do. Unfortunately, we live in the city and our yard is typically full of his siblings and there is just nowhere to ride. Also, I am a neuro nurse who has cared for patients who have met terrible ends on the seat of a dirt bike (and the trajectory off of one), so that is never going to happen while he lives at home. So, it may put you in the position of having to say no to something that is in a book that YOU gave your kid. See the problem? But otherwise, great book.

Fun with Finances

I enjoyed reading this even though I am much older than the target audience. I really like the explanation of compound interest and the stress place on the importance of savings as a long term investment tool. This is a fun and age appropriate book that covers the basics of saving, building wealth, and dealing with set-backs. Honestly, adults could stand to read this book as well. It's a quick and easy read.

The Pages are Packed with Useful Information About a Host of Financially-Related Topics.

What kid doesn’t want to be a millionaire? For that matter, what adult doesn’t want to be a millionaire? I know I sure would like to be. The secret, according to authors James McKenna and Jeannine Glista, is to start young. Come up with creative ways to earn $100, and then invest that money repeatedly until your nest egg grows. With the right amount of good investments and enough time, you can be a millionaire.

The steps are simple enough: (1) Make it; (2) Save it; and (3) Grow it. These strategies are explained in full in the text. You will learn how to set financial goals. You will learn how to create a working budget. The authors even give you five ideas for ways to make your first $100 that you can invest to make more money.

The authors include lots of useful tools that kids can fill out and make use of, such as the “Get a Job” Master Plan, Your Two-Page Plan to Become a Millionaire, and Your Personal Budget Tracker, along with others.

This is the type of book I wish I had read when I was a kid. It’s written in easy-to-understand language. The illustrations by Matt Fontaine help young readers visualize the concepts in the text. A Glossary of Terms at the end of the book explain words and phrases that are highlighted throughout the text.

The pages are packed with useful information about a host of financially-related topics. This is a great book for parents to give to their kids to help them learn about finances. It’s also a great book for teachers to use in their classrooms when teaching students about money and financial matters.

About the Author

Caroline Kitchener graduated from Princeton in 2014 with a degree in History and Gender Studies. Her work has appeared on The Atlantic and The Guardian. She currently lives in Washington, D.C. with her partner.

Refreshingly honest and thoughtfully crafted!

Life is difficult to navigate during any transition, especially the first year after of college. There are no "first year out" blueprints or post-collegiate scripts to follow. Although this liminal time is, for many, a season of opportunity and excitement- it is also chock full of uncertainty and anxiety. Vocational discernment, shifting family dynamics, changing friendships, intimate relationships, and establishing new systems of support can be daunting. Surprisingly, few books speak to this pivotal season of life. Fortunately, author Caroline Kitchener recognized this gap, and with stunning clarity and abundant empathy, shares the stories of real young women who make their way post-university life. As a higher education professional mentoring students for over 18 years, I found Kitchener's writing refreshingly honest and thoughtfully crafted. I highly recommend this book for not only university students and recent graduates, but anyone who cares about "emerging adults" and their continued journey of self discovery.

A must-read for all college grads!

As a woman finishing her first full year post-grad (albeit, not at an Ivy institution), I found great solace in the stories of these five women. Caroline Kitchener details their experiences with great compassion, honesty, and insight. Her words jump off the page and hit me somewhere deep in my chest, knowing she is describing not only their experiences but my own.

My only criticism: I wish this book had come out one year sooner! Perhaps that would have spared me from the sleepless nights I spent wondering if anyone felt as lonely or confused as I did. Fortunately, the millions of women graduating this Spring will have Caroline's book to guide them through the turbulence of their first year post-college and to remind them that they are not alone.

I was disappointed by the lack of depth and insight in several ...

I was drawn to read this book from a review in the Wall Street Journal and being a parent of a daughter the same age and circumstance as these women. I was disappointed by the lack of depth and insight in several of these young women transitioning into adulthood - or the 'real world.' I thought I'd pass this book along to my same-age daughter to reassure her that her experiences are shared. But they aren't. She has had to struggle with managing her own expenses from rent that eats considerably into her paycheck, to the loneliness of trying to create a new social circle, to becoming a bit more 'street-smart' to ensure her safety living in a large East Coast city, to truly searching what is her role in the world - how can she make a difference. I was so disappointed in the constant introducing of 'polyamorous' relationships - this is a 'big word' for 'playing the field.' There are so many larger issues to occupy these young women's minds and fuel their growth! The character, Denise, intrigued me as did the author - they were trying to 'grow up' or grow into the new phase of their life. I wish I heard more about Denise's thoughts and reflections - but she was probably so busy her input to the author may have been more limited that the other women. I was hoping I'd read how these young women used this post-grad year as a time to explore and reflect on their place in our world, our communities. We need our young people to go out, make a difference, have an impact, not be trying to make ends meet by escorting older, well- to- do men who pay for companionship or being the #3 or 4 partner in a 'polyamorous' relationship. Find your place by reaching out to your new community in the 'real world': join a synagogue, church, Big Brother/Big Sister, a food bank, tutor at an elementary school or the after school program at the Y or an adult education GED program. Think beyond yourself and your needs. Because Lord knows, there is so much good that needs to be done within each of our own communities. Reach beyond yourself! There are so many opportunities to grow and to make a difference.

About the Author

Stephanie Craft is Associate Professor of Journalism at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before earning a doctorate in Communication from Stanford University, she worked as a newspaper journalist in California, Arkansas, and Washington.

Charles N. Davis is the dean of Grady College at the University of Georgia, and is the former executive director for the National Freedom of Information Coalition (NFOIC), headquartered at the Missouri School of Journalism. In 2008, Davis was named the Scripps Howard Foundation National Journalism Teacher of the Year.
