A *must read* book for all interested in 'continuity' in the sciences, mathematics, logics, and in philosophy

This is a *must read* book, not only for those interested in the science, lmathematics, logic, and philosophy of the great 19th/early 20th century polymath, Charles S. Peirce, but for anyone interested in the trajectory of contemporary mathematics and philosophy, especially philosophical pragmatism. Zalamea is *the* acknowledged expert on Peircean math and logiic, and I have little doubt that his reputation will grow more generally in philosophy and mathematics in the years to come. This book will undoubtedly contribute mightily to that. Since his interests and work extend far beyond the disciplines mentioned to include many of the arts, perhaps especially music, he may turn out to be the last "Renaissance man" of the post-modern era.

Corporate economics for knowledge workers explained

I'm reading this at every opportunity, but wanted to offer an early review: Eric's articulation of the corporate pyramid tracks very well with my experiences. His breakdown of economic interests & gains is well done and long over-due. Unfortunately for me, I can attest the accuracy of the compensation model he describes. I especially recommend this to young knowledge workers.

A real eye-opener of a book

This book comes at a point in my own career at which I am discovering that studying my tail off to become a far better engineer will only net me a slight premium in income, and at a point at which I might be tiring of being treated derisively by managers and company owners, in spite of the fact that the work we do as software developers has become critical to keeping every company afloat.

Developer Hegemony provides some good guidance as to how to escape this trap and perhaps change the industry for the better.

The book is very well-researched and cleverly written. It gives the background on employment arrangements since the middle ages, to give some historical background. It discusses the author's own view on corporate advancement, and then lays out a plan for potentially better situations to come.

I have wondered whether the section covering corporate advancement might be exceedingly cynical (the author acknowledges thoroughly that it is indeed cynical), looking around at my current work place and thinking to myself, "This place is definitely at least *somewhat* more merit-based than the typical large corporation in the book but ... maybe not, and maybe the book is spot on." Regardless of cynicism, the perspective given in the book is *extremely useful,* so much so in fact that I plan on re-reading the book and taking thorough notes.

This monumental work is a must-read for all knowledge workers, especially Software Developers. This book has helped me grasp the workings of the corporate model and to understand how knowledge work is simply incompatible as things stand today. But not to worry, there's a way forward!

I'm seeing life very differently, thanks to the insights in Developer Hegemony. I have no doubt there will be some changes in my future!

In My Own Way: Alan Watts, His Own Way

This autobiography, published 1972, by Alan Wilson Watts, the expatriate British orientalist and philosopher, is a joy to read, a document of Watts' life, and a history of the 1960s counterculture.
Watts early on evidenced a love for eastern philosophy. At the age of 20, he was already one of the major writers and thinkers on subjects such as Zen Buddhism and Taoism. He was a major exponent of the Zen outlook of Thou Art That.
Watts, an unfrocked Episcopal priest, has often been derided (wrongfully) as a 'popularizer' of subjects more properly reserved for serious study and practice, and (more rightly) as sometimes glib and definitely irreverent. This book is a record of Watts' indulgence in the pleasures of the flesh with a high spiritual purpose.
Watts wrote more than 20 books, and this is Watts at his irreverent best. Written with his tongue firmly jammed into his cheek, it is a compendium of a lifetime's worth of exuberant fun and learning for the joy of it.
Watts gleefully recounts tales of spiritual masters with stomachaches, hidebound bishops drinking fine wines, and sexy women discovering their Buddha-nature.
Nothing is too minor or too major for Watts's wit, and his reminiscences carry us from the bathroom of his childhood home in England to Canterbury Cathedral, from New York City to Big Sur, and touch on almost every major and many minor figures of the 1950s and 1960s.
Watts unabashedly tells us that he finds his life intensely interesting. Anyone reading IN MY OWN WAY would agree.

A bit disappointing

I didn't find this autobiography as appealing as many of the other flowery reviews. I like Alan Watts' philosophical pieces a lot, but there was something in the tone of his autobiography that was arrogant and misleading. His writing is beautiful, as usual, but there is lack of intimacy that I would have expected in a candid autobiography, especially from someone who claims to be a spiritual entertainer. The prose is sprinkled with reminders of how he realizes the ego is a fiction, and how he is enlightened in that sense. Which is fine, I suppose, but I thought the frequent reminders were a little unnecessary, or as he likes to put it, "putting legs on a snake."
More importantly, his recounting of his life completely lacks a sense of problems or misfortunes. Some people really do lack this, but from his biographies it is evident that Alan Watts did not. He does not (at the request of his father) talk about his relationship with his mother at all in the book, and he also does not discuss at all his alcoholism problems. He also does not discuss the sexual problems which led to his first marriage dissolving, and doesn't really explain why he divorced his second wife. I found this disappointing because he probably had a lot of wisdom to share about this. It also makes him seem less human. ...
Despite all this, the autobiography is entertaining and definitely worth reading for anyone interested in an inside view of the counterculture movement. His reflections, though at times a little too confident, are still mostly interesting to read.
However, I would recommend reading this book along with an objective biography like "Zen Effects- the Life of Alan Watts" to get a more balanced view on his life.

a courageous and original mind

Though I was skeptical when handed this book - I am neither into religion nor do I desire to have a hip-zen lifestyle in Southern California - I was immediately drawn in to the way this amazing man's life unfolded. Early on, he set out to be an independent intellectual, constantly learning and living in his "own way." He succeeded, in spite of the odds, on the terms that he set out for himself. This was deeply inspiring to me, and it turned out that despite the surface differences of interest, Alan Watts had a lot to say about the choices one makes in life and how to go about living.
The book is also filled with details that are as fascinating as they are hilarious. A friend of his youth made a pilgrimage to a famous and ancient monastery, which he discovered was "an elaborate homosexual organization." Though he lacked a university degree, Watts was allowed to study at Northwestern, which he described as "the type of place where philosphers worked from 9 to 5." Later, in LA, he hung out with Aldous Huxley, experimenting with hallucinogens, beating drums all night long, and listening to the incredible rhythm of that brilliant man's speech, which he says arrested all conversation in entire restaurants. The list goes on and on.
Warmly recommended.

Priceless

If i am not mistaken this is the very book that Einstein read and from which he developed his idead of special relativity. It was the critique of Mach of the ideas of Newton which exposed the flaus in Newton's thinking. Einstein built on Mach's ideas and brought his own questions to the subject which brough great results, not only in classical physics but made possible the developement of modern physics.
Descartes said: "Today, then, as i have suitably freed my mind from all cares, and have secured for myself an assured leisure in peaceful solitude, i shall at last apply myself earnestly and freely to the general overthrow of all my former opinions."
It is in this spirit that new physics, and sciences in general, are created. A million experiments will not bring about any progress. Pure rationalism is the true creator, which is at the very nature of a theoretical physicist. This book exposes the thinking of such a person.

Intellectual giant

One of the most influential books that led Einstein to become skeptical of concepts like absolute space and time. Einstein enjoyed Mach's no-nonsense attitude. I found it a bit difficult to read but enjoyed it very much.

Scholarly Without Being Overwhelming....

Ryrie, perhaps best known for the Ryrie Study Bible, has here written a verse-by-verse Revelation commentary noteworthy for being sufficiently detailed and scripturally sound without being too overwhelming for the average layperson. For readers with a mindset to study but little or no background in Revelation, I recommend this solid commentary. Also, this updated edition has quite a few helpful charts. If after this book more depth is desired, try other dispensational commentaries such as those of Walvoord, Thomas, Couch (ed.), or Newell. (For those familiar with eschatology lingo, if you are a preterist, historicist, or postrib premillenialist in your endtimes interpretation, you will not like this book, since it is written from a pre-trib, pre-millenialist viewpoint.)

I need the last book !

I received an e ARC of The Circle Broken from NetGalley in exchange with an honest review.

A book were my heart was broken with every turn of page narrated by Charlie and Lilly.

I have already read the first book, The Circle, and when I saw this, I could not do anything but get it.From How the way ended in Book 1 , I knew that this was going to be a sad book. And it was.

The only reason it took me so long to finish it is that I had started it during my finals and I could not handle reading something so sad during such nerving times. So as soon as I finished my exams, I continued reading. And I read it everywhere,in the airport, in the mall,in the shop,and in the car ( no worries I was not driving) And every time I had to fight the urge to hide my tears. I never cried in public over a book !

I read 10 years of torture, pain,and ghosts of memories. I do not which is worst. To think that someone you love is dead. Or to know that someone you love thinks that you are dead, and that you would never see her again because it is wrong by the rules

By the end, there were only 20 pages left, and I was completely loosing my mind; How can everything be fixed in 20 pages? I started pacing back and forth, tossing my phone away because I am afraid of what coming next. The probabilities where infinite. Lilly could move on and fall in love with someone else, or charlie could remain a jerk for ever, or he would come to his senses to late, and all I can do is scream and shout! My sister even started laughing at me. And the ending well, let me just say that you would have enjoyed watching me reading it !

I love how Kathleen added more description in this book than the first one. It really showed up and made a great difference in reading !

There was still some things that were a bit fast paced,and that I wish we got more explanation how it happened.

I really enjoyed getting tortured by The Circle Broken and I give it 5/5 stars ( A- according to my own rating scale ! )

I want a HEA for these two people

*SPOILERS* If you want to be surprised, please skip this review if you haven't read "The Circle" yet. *SPOILERS*

"The Circle Broken" picks up where "The Circle" leaves off with Charlie imprisoned in a facility for the mentally ill (because of his desire for an Earthan) and Lilly in the hospital minus one of legs as a result of their capture by Sentrian leaders.
This story was such a difficult one to read. Not because it wasn't good (it was wonderful) but because of the amount of suffering endured by Charlie and Lilly over the course of their separation. You could feel Lilly's heart bleeding with the loss (or so she thought) of Charlie. I mean I cried throughout the first chapter. And, her struggle to adjust and start living her life without him was truly poignant. Charlie's suffering, while different in nature, was no less agonizing to read. His ordeal as an inmate in what amounted to a psychiatric prison and his interaction with the staff there was infuriating and frustrating and a lesson in patience. The staff (one in particular) was a very cruel overseer of Charlie's care. I really wanted vengeance against that person. The others were convinced that Charlie was unbalanced because of his infatuation with a girl from Earth and couldn't understand why his treatments weren't curing him of his mental illness. She couldn't be his "One". It wasn't possible. I was anxious for Charlie's release and hoped for a reuniting between the two lovers. I really enjoyed this scifi, young adult romance. It was suspenseful and emotional and carried you along smoothly toward the finish. While it ended on a good note, I was disappointed to discover it was not the last in the series. There should be one more to finish out the story between Charlie and Lilly. Hopefully, they will get their Happy-Ever-After. They deserve it.

It is almost impossible not to feel sad for Lily

This is Book 2 of The Circle. Charlie and Lilly's story continues.

Lily is left on earth thinking Charlie is dead while Charlie is on Sentaria being tortured. Charlie is considered mentally ill because he thinks his One is an Earth girl. He is sentenced to 10 years in a mental hospital. His doctor and nurse utilize Charlie to try and make a name for themselves. While Charlie and Lily are miserable and trying to live without each other, a new, radical group is conspiring to overtake the Sentrian government.
Miss Montemayor keeps the momentum going in The Circle Broken. It is almost impossible not to feel sad for Lily. Here she is living with the lie that the "man" she loves is dead. She mourns, suffers, and tries hard to continue living.
Miss Montemayor's detailed description of Charlie's torture and suffering makes it impossible for the
reader NOT to feel horror and anger at what he suffers. As a matter of fact, I wonder how she came up with everything he went through. Hmmmm.
All I can say is you can't read book 1 and not go on to book 2.
