After a tongue thrashing from his doctor, Richard Sifkitz turns his addiction to fatty foods into an addiction to a fantasy world created around his stationary bike, spending hours a day pedaling away. But as his obsession grows, the lines between fantasy and reality dim and he believes someone or something is trailing him on his path. Ron McLarty, who previously recorded King's Salem's Lot and Faithful, delivers this novella with an excellent pace and easy disposition. His controlled reading creates a much tenser atmosphere with surprises and plot twists made more shocking without the advance warnings of a more dramatic reading. The jazzy segues between chapters lightens the tone just enough to make the listener feel uncertain about where King is taking this story. King's writing style is quite agreeable to the audio format, making for an enjoyable although slightly dark tale. This novella was published in the anthology Borderlands 5(Reviews, Jan. 19, 2004). About the Author
Stephen King is the author of more than fifty books, all of them worldwide bestsellers. Among his most recent are 11/22/63, Full Dark No Stars, Blockade Billy, Under the Dome, Just After Sunset, the Dark Tower novels, Lisey’s Story, and Bag of Bones. King was the recipient of the 2003 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, and in 2007 he was inducted as a Grand Master of the Mystery Writers of America. He lives in Maine with his wife, novelist Tabitha King.
Ron McLarty has appeared on Broadway in That Championship Season, Our Country’s Good, and Moonchildren. His film credits include Two Bits, The Postman, and The Flamingo Kid. He has starred on television in Spenser for Hire and Cop Rock. Mr. McLarty is also a novelist and an award-winning playwright.

Not much here

The middle aged hero of this story has gotten fat after the death of his wife and his cholestorol has gone sky high so he goes on a crash diet and buys a stationary bike. Being an artist he draws a picture of a lovely country road to a tiny town in upsatate New York on his wall. After a few weeks things get weird and our hero finds that while he's losing that flab he's also traveling on the road for real and somehow he's angered the workmen--- the guys, real guys somehow who maintain the road which is really his own body.

This is dreary cauationary tale for fat guys has too much cursing, too much product placement and there's only one good scary moment: the scene in Carlos's garage. Other than that one scene I did not care about the hero or what was waiting for him at the end of the road.

I don't want to say that the King is dead but maybe he's under a spell, or stunned or sleeping or something because this story just didn't take off. I'm not saying that I want King to write like he did in Carrie or Salem's Lot because that is impossible but I do wish he could get his literary groove back. Stationary Bike was just lackluster and wouldn't even scare a nervous two year old.

Solid storytelling. I have to disagree with those that didn't like (better yet, love) this short story. Stephen King is at his best here. For those who loved, The Long Walk, I think this story is a sure-win to entertain. It kept my attention and made me feel like I was actually riding on Richard Sifkitz kick-pegs. Do it again, Stevie!

Does a good job of showing the reader how to start from scratch and build their security policy infrastructure

Security policies are like fiber, that is, the kind you eat. Everyone agrees that fiber is good for you, but no one really wants to eat it. So too with information security policies. They are sorely needed, but most users don't go out of their way to comply with them. And in many firms, they are not even trained in what they have to do. But failure to have adequate information security policies can lead to myriad risks for an organization.

For the sake of a basic definition, a policy is a formal, brief, and high-level statement or plan that embraces an organization's general beliefs, goals, objectives, and acceptable procedures for a specified subject area. The purpose of information security is to protect an organization's resources. The cornerstone of any information security strategy is a robust set of policies, procedures, standards and guidelines.

There are many reasons what information security policies are needed. Some of the most imperative reasons are:
* To inform users of their information protection duties
* Advise them what they can and cannot do with respect to sensitive information.
* Define how users are permitted to represent the organization, what they may disclose publicly, and how they may use organizational computer resources for personal purposes.
* To clearly define protective measures for these special information assets. The existence of a policy may be a decisive factor in a court of law, showing that the organization took steps to protect its intellectual property.
* Define both acceptable and unacceptable behavior. For example, spending a lot of time surfing the web and downloading videos off the net are both generally unacceptable.
* Policies are needed to establish the basis for disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

Building an Effective Information Security Policy Architecture does a good job of showing the reader how to start from scratch and build their security policy infrastructure. The book starts off at a high-level about the need for policies, and then goes into details on how to develop, write and sell these policies to management.

The book is a good guide to the entire policy lifecycle, and how to use various means to get to the ultimate goal. At 340 pages, the first ten chapters comprise 155 pages and deal with creating the policy infrastructure, communicating with management, and putting the entire policy puzzle together. The final 185 pages comprise 21 appendices of various examples of different policies.

A most significant downside and frustrating part to the book is that there is no CD-ROM with it, or companion website in which to download and use the numerous policy and process examples. At $80.00, such an option should be de rigueur. The lack of electronic versions of the policies in a book such as this is senseless.

Also, this is the first technology book that I have ever seen that did not cite a single reference. It is hard to imagine writing a book on this topic without using some sort of external reference. While the author may not want to quote sources, she should at least point the reader to other sources of information about security policies. Two notable and essential sources in the information security policy space are the SANS Institute - SANS Security Policy Project, which is free, and Information Security Policies Made Easy from Information Shield, Inc., which is $795.00, but worth every penny for a serious security policy effort. Full disclosure: I am on the Information Shield Expert Panel, but get no financial incentives or compensation.

Overall, Building an Effective Information Security Policy Architecture is a good resource to use if you are tasked to create or modify your organizations set of information security policies. The book will likely find itself on the desk of many information security professionals.

While it is frustrating that the book makes you reinvent the wheel by not having electronic versions of the polices, its value still can't be underestimated. Let's hope future versions of the book will fix that anomaly.

Good Intro Repo Book, More Geared to Euro Repo

Excellent guide to repo basics. Choudhry writes more from a Euro repo perspective, and spends time dealing with Gilt repo and the Global Master Repurchase Agreement. A good deal of attention is given to the lending characteristics of repo, which I personally found valuable. The same is true for both risk and the marketplace in general.

The book is filled with outstanding math and examples using actual Bloomberg screen shots. Unfortunately I have to agree with reviewer Lulu about some of the errors. While I did not find it so troubling, it was a minor irritation.

Before you buy the book, do a Search Inside and compare the Contents & Index with the same in Steiner's "Mastering Repo Markets" as one may be more appropriate for your particular needs.

a fairly useful guide for practitioners

I bought this book because I work as an economist/consultant in developing market economies that often are looking to jump start repo markets. So I needed some real world details. For that purpose the book was useful. For example, it distinguishes between repos, sale/buybacks and secured loans. It has a fairly detailed section on the legal and regulatory aspects of repos written from the UK perspective. It should be noted that this is based on the Global Master Repurchase Agreement (which is based on UK legal precedents) and not the Master Repurchase Agreement (which is based on New York state law). I have worked through some of the examples of calculations of rates and prices and found that some assumptions were not clearly stated. Perhaps there are better guides out there for actual market practice?

A lot of information is scrambled together in this book, while not really everything is explained, and there are also a lot of errors.

I wonder this should be a third edition, because I would assume that the rate of errors should decrease with the edition number...

Check it out in the "look inside" feature:

Examples: On page 10, there is a 'x' (times) sign, although it should be '=' (equal) sign. On page 8 there is an example with an interest period of 31 days (and the author reminds you, that it is NOT 30 days, because the 30th day would not be a business day) and the calcs are done with 32 days.

On pages 52 and following, the author "shows" how a basket repo looks like. It is a repo where the collateral is a basket of securities.

He prints figures for these securities, together with a figure for interest where I could not figure out what the assumed period and/or day count convention it should be.

What you learn when reading this example is that the value of three securities is the sum of the values of each.

And of course you're puzzled where this funny interest figure comes from.

Another weird one is on page 32: He presents the formula for calculating the present value for a bond with semi-annual coupon payments, (as a sum, which can be simplified btw) and then states that, for finding the yield of this you must solve it "through iteration, that is, by estimating the yield from two trial values for r, then solving by using the formula for linear interpolation". Is this applied root finding for dummies, or what?

I would like to give this book to someone as collateral, but I guess it needs quite a haircut, because it's market value will drop soon...

The English edition of this indispensable study of the most eminent postwar architect of the Netherlands will be published on the 80th birthday of Aldo van Eyck. The book contains more than 600 illustrations, of which 100 are in colour, a bibliography of writings by Aldo van Eyck, a selected bibliography of literature about Aldo van Eyck and a list of designs and completed works. Francis Strauven is professor at the Academy of Art and Science in Brussels. From 1971 to 1992, he was editor of the magazines Wonen TABK and Archis, in which he wrote articles on Art Nouveau, Functionalism and contemporary developments. His publications include Bouwen in België (1945-1970), L.H. de Koninck (1980), L' Architecture en Belgique 1970-1980 (1981), Renaat Braem (1983), Aldo van Eyck's Orphanage, a modern monument (1987) and Jos Bascourt, art nouveau in Antwerp (1993).

Its Funny

I read this book in my second grade class. This is a funny book. Even Steven likes everything even. Odd Todd likes everything odd. For example, Even Steven would like 8 pancakes and Odd Todd would like 7 pancakes. Even Steven goes through hard work with Odd Todd. Then, Even Steven notices that odd and even are both good. My favorite part was when Odd Todd and Even Steven win their $50 prize.

Concept-Rich and Too Cute.

My 4 1/2 year old and I love this book! We're starting pre-K this fall, and I've been looking for math-content books to enrich our daily reading practice. Like another reviewer said, the book isn't overtly focused on math concepts, but I think the idea that everything about Even Steven and Odd Todd is even and odd (respectively, of course) is really clever. My son loves the quirkiness of each character, and I'm thrilled that he's getting some knowledge base of the concepts he'll eventually learn in school.

Incidentally, I purchased this book because it was listed as a resource at the back of "Missing Mittens" by Stuart J. Murphy. If you're looking for books based on mathematical concepts, Murphy's MathStart books are really nicely done. http://www.mathstart.net/

Very clever

My 2 1/2 year old loves this book. I have read it many times. I first heard about it when a mom at a park was reciting it from memory to her 2 year old. It is a very fun book and a great way to introduce the concept of odd and even numbers. Also, the pictures are very fun and my son loves counting all of the fish, cats, gerbils, etc on the pages. So, he is definitely developing his counting too.

Explore your true self and intuition when stuck in a rut.

I never liked journaling and found no use for it, except feeling stupid and having nothing that seemed significant to write about. THIS BOOK turns THE NON-JOURNALER INTO A WRITER by helping you work through your feelings with prompts and ideas that really make you think. After just 8 days into the 40 I made some major realizations and had to stop myself from rushing through it. But the main idea of the book is to help you to slow down and listen to yourself.

Wonderful Journal for Self-Discovery

I had this book for three years and had not used it. While in India for one month, I decided to give the book a try. It was the best journal to write in at the best time possible. It helped to change my life. I absolutely love it! The questions are thought provoking and there are a few things that you might not want to write about. You will find some of the questions a little tough to answer, but the insight you will gain from writing about "scary" topics is amazing. As you complete the journal you will find out so much about yourself and what is really important to you.

One of the better ones I think

This is basically a spriritual workbook/journal. It's not just a blank book, but an actual guided workbook that asks you questions and gives you exercises. This would be a great journal to bring with you on a 40 day meditation or yoga retreat (if you can afford to go off and leave work for that long)... but a book like this is also very good for people who can't get away from work for that long and yet still want to take a 40 day retreat without turning into a monk for 40 days and leaving their lives completely. It asks you to take 15 minutes a day at least for the next 40 days to be alone with yourself, without any other distractions and just be with yourself rather than be the "you" that your family and everyone else expects you to be- which more times than not is so convincing we often start to believe that we really are that person they expect, when in reality that is just a shell that your family and environment has molded over the real you. The author mentions many different religions in the beginning of the book, but it's obvious in the writing that she feels the strongest connection with Judaism. Those who are Jewish or feel a connection to it in some way may appreciate this however people of other faiths are definitely not excluded.
