About the Author
Karen Brody is a relationship coach and former journalist, who currently lives in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, with her partner and cat. Karen is originally from Chicago, though she left there 21 years ago, headed for mountains and sunny skies. Her favorite things to do are: Salsa dancing, road trips with no destination, and weekends in nature hiking and writing. This book is a must read for men and for women.

I feel very different after reading "Open Her". I would even go so far as to say that I was forever changed! As a woman, I was surprised at how much I learned about myself in the pages of the book. I experienced a renewed reverence, celebration and awe for women and the feminine way. I felt validated, seen, released, and loved, as a warmth of recognition of my feminine aspects radiated from the pages. I recognized parts of me that had been trying to man-up to make up for men's lack of strength and clarity, and I felt myself putting the sword down, and desiring to encourage men on their self-journeys to provide a safe place for the feminine to thrive and give back. Through the author's beautiful presentation I experienced a level of worthiness and love for self and other that I had no idea was possible, as she neutralized the stereotypical divisions between the sexes, and made them, instead, beautiful and tangible invitations from one another for understanding and empowerment on the fragile playing field of intimacy. As I read on an on (I couldn't put the book down), there was the sense that this kind of profound union of giving and receiving was not only possible, but ours for the experiencing. I felt a genuine knowing flooding through me that I could ask without reservation for the time and the care of a man awake in the ways the author described in the archetypes; a man who loves and leads with his whole heart to reflect this in me, and that this asking would be supportive to the man's well-being and fullness of being all he is meant and wishes to be. I began to fathom more and more how when men and women show up with all of themselves, with awareness of one another, with strength, wisdom, and an open heart, that there is no limit to healing and deep intimacy that can take place, no matter how difficult it has been. I believe the author has created a bridge between the sexes, and a map back to our natural and authentic selves, that place where our giving and receiving becomes simultaneously our expression of love and our fullness of receiving and being received. The book was unique and appealing and the clarity and the pure power of the writing felt as though I was downloading sacred truth into my cells. There was so much depth in her words, and it just kept getting deeper and fuller-bodied. The examples of men blew me away! I had no idea men could be so beautiful, real, open, and willing to see themselves, and to look upon their loves with new and expanded vision. The author’s work with men and couples sounds absolutely incredible, and I enjoyed having many examples in which the men were directly quoted. How I wished I'd had this information at 20. Now in my late 30's after a divorce and a significant relationship where I was afraid to trust my intuition even though it gnawed at me for suppressing valid concerns that clashed with my own hard-won truths. After reading this book, so much makes perfect sense. I realize that it takes two to tango, and that I am only part of the equation, and that it is a gift when a man decides to know himself through and through and to learn to love with strength and grace. Very thankful for this read.

Karen's ground-breaking insights bring light to how we men bring themselves to the world - a Must Read!

As a Neo-Tantra Massage practitioner and relationship coach, I have spent hundreds of hours helping my women clients understand their lives better through understanding Female Archetypes. I also always felt that there was not enough material on us men and our own Male Archetypes. It felt so amazing to read Karen's intimate insights into how she experienced the seven Male Archetypes in her own life. What is very helpful is how she shares just how the seven archetypes actually gifted her life and helped heal her "man-wounds". Masculine and Feminine energies and ways of relating to each other, have come increasingly under the spotlight, as all of us try to make sense of the new paradigm of Feminine caring energy sweeping the planet. How can we men relate with more understanding with the amazing women in our lives, so that they feel appreciated for their journeys and contribution to us? Karen's book has brought so much clarity to my work and also to my way of relating to the women who cross my path. As a highly creative man, I am very familiar with the apparent chaos in my energy before I get clarity about what I want to create and because I also embody four of the seven archetypes and I find myself flowing between the four with greater ease now. Karen's book shows yet again how the feminine desire is to bring the masculine to greater penetration of her and the world - through heartfelt love and full presence. She shows just how the feminine instinct and intuition (through sharing her own experiences), flows best when the woman senses and knows the male archetype in front of her. I have experienced a new level of worthiness as a man, because Karen has articulated just how amazing our gifts are as masculine men. This self love and self appreciation has helped me to heal from a 24 year long marriage which failed partly because I didn't have the heart and the balls to stand in my masculine archetypes and the strength they bring to me. All Karen's exercises and practices around the shadows of each archetype are also very clear and easy to understand and also apply! Loving my own shadows has allowed them catch up with the rest of me and now I feel more congruent as a man! For me, this book helps to bridge the gap between masculine and feminine essence, in very practical ways that we can apply to our lives. I now feel our sacredness as masculine, loving, fierce, directed men in a powerful way. I am very grateful to have attracted this powerful book into my energy - Thank you Karen!

A bit derivative, but a good read

For the past several years, I've been comitted to the path that Karen lays out, through a Deida-oriented men's group and a yoga and meditation practice. (And by the way, none of it has helped me bring about the relationships with women that I want, though it has had plenty of other benefits.)
I am still grateful to Karen Brody for writing this book. Her experiences of the men she's dated are especially insightful. This woman's heart is absolutely in the right place.
The ideas seem to be a bit derived from David Deida's "The Way of the Superior Man" and a book published in 1990 called "King, Warrior, Magician, Lover" by Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette. But she addresses topics in a way that David Deida never would, and her everyday language is much more approachable than Moore and Gillette.
This book is at its best when she writes about her experience of men; in particular, the contrast between the two men who are with and without direction in the chapter on the Director. It's great to be reminded of what feels good to a woman and what doesn't. The chapter on the Warrior was fascinating too. (There is a fuller explanation of the Warrior's shadow side in Moore & Gillette's chapter on the Warrior.)
The book does suffer from a misconception that if a man aligns himself with his true purpose in life, his problems with women will take care of themselves. Discovering that this was wrong was a big disappointment, and reading it again made me angry. But this was not the first time I'd read or heard that, and certainly won't be the last. Some men do indeed seem to have had this experience, not me.
So even though some of the book conflicts with my personal experience, it's a good read on the whole, and mostly helpful. I have already recommended it to others in my community.
