From award-winning author A.L. Kennedy, an original Doctor Who novel featuring the beloved Fourth Doctor, as played by Tom Baker.

“I shall make you the jewel at the heart of the universe.”

Something distinctly odd is going on in Arbroath. It could be to do with golfers being dragged down into the bunkers at the Fetch Brothers’ Golf Spa Hotel, never to be seen again. It might be related to the strange twin grandchildren of the equally strange Mrs Fetch--owner of the hotel and fascinated with octopuses. It could be the fact that people in the surrounding area suddenly know what others are thinking, without anyone saying a word.

Whatever it is, the Doctor is most at home when faced with the distinctly odd. With the help of Fetch Brothers’ Junior Receptionist Bryony, he’ll get to the bottom of things. Just so long as he does so in time to save Bryony from quite literally losing her mind, and the entire world from destruction.

Because something huge, ancient and alien lies hidden beneath the ground and it’s starting to wake up…

I was slightly disappointed since the book was advertised as an all-new adventure
By Amazon Customer
For anyone that has read the collection of short stories in Doctor Who: Time Trips, this particular adventure will be very familiar. It is simply one of those stories expanded into a novel. While the story line, itself, is fast paced and upbeat, I was slightly disappointed since the book was advertised as an all-new adventure, which it was not. For those that enjoy an abbreviated form, the one in Time Trips is more than sufficient. For those that like a little more detail, the book would be the way to go.

A hit for fans of Doctor Who
By Jamie Kline (Lucky Devil Reviews)
I'm a relatively new convert to the Doctor Who fandom, but ever since the first episode I watched (Rose) I've been hooked. I can't really say I have a favorite Doctor, because I think they each bring something unique and special to the role. Doctor Who: The Drosten's Curse centers around the 4th Doctor, who I am not familiar with as I have not yet gone back and watched the older episodes. Although each actor plays the role a bit differently, the essence of the Doctor is always the same. The author nailed his personality, which involves a mixture of compassion, courage, intelligence, and an air of superiority.

And where would the Doctor be without his companions? In this story he befriends a young receptionist named Bryony Mailer, who is fed up with her job and dreams of bigger and better things. He also meets Mr. Patterson, or Putta, who is not exactly a normal man. What he is, however, is very cowardly and awkward, and he just so happens to have a huge crush on Bryony. Bryony is just about as different from him as can be; she is very driven, confident, and courageous. I admired her, but found myself frequently annoyed by Putta, at least for the first half of the book. While Bryony remained strong in the face of danger, Putta had to work hard to overcome his timid nature and I did find some respect for him by the end. The Doctor, of course, was his usual genius self, which often came off as condescending or rude, but I guess hundreds of years of experience make it hard to deal with foolishness and stupidity.

The foe the Doctor and his companions come up against is ancient and powerful. You know it's going to be a wild ride when the Doctor is very obviously afraid of the creature and its powers. Even with its psychic abilities, it isn't one of the most interesting alien species the Doctor has ever come across (in my book anyway). He definitely has to depend heavily on his friends in order to find a solution, but that's not a rare thing in the Doctor Who universe. Even with all of his wisdom, his companions often play a big part in saving the day.

Doctor Who: The Drosten's Curse was the first Doctor Who novel I've ever read, but I don't think it will be my last. Author A.L. Kennedy is an obvious fan of the show and she definitely was able to accurately capture the Doctor's personality. I could see the whole story play out in my head as I was reading and it was easy to pretend it was an actual episode of the show. If you are a Doctor Who fan, even if you aren't familiar with the older incarnations of the Doctor, check this book out.

A mixed bag of a story in the Doctor Who world
By Love2read
On Arbroath, something strange is going on. Golfers are disappearing, people are hearing other people’s thoughts and then there is the strange grandchildren of the equally weird Mrs. Fetch, who owns the local hotel. Whatever is going on here, the Doctor will figure it out, with the help of the hotel junior receptionist, Bryony. But something alien and ancient is awakening and it is up to the Doctor to find a way to stop it before it is too late. .
I love the new version of Doctor Who and with this installment, we get to take an adventure with the Fourth Doctor, who was played by Tom Baker on the show and I got to admit, it was a fun yet confusing story to read. THE DROSTEN’S CURSE is my first foray into the older (now classic) doctors and I got to admit the author did a bang up job in capturing the Doctor’s personality within the pages. This doctor has some levels of psychotic wonder and awe in his travels and the author does a great job in capturing that as well as his emotions within the story. As I haven’t read any of the classic Doctor Who stories with the older Doctors, this was a slight departure for me. The story is at times creepy and suspenseful yet you can’t help but wonder when the Doctor will figure it all out. It had a nice suspense filled emotion going through the whole book, especially when you have portions where you were going ‘WHAT?’ in that scared high pitch voice. This would have been even better if it was a dark and stormy night, in my opinion, just to up the creepy factor a bit.

The downside I found with this latest book in the Doctor Whology is the pacing at times went from manically fast to slower than a turtle. There was no happy medium and I got a sense of the author trying to fit a lot of things in the story as they could while keeping true to the world that is Doctor Who. There are a lot of details within THE DROSTEN’S CURSE, so many that the story gets lost at times within details we didn’t need to know and there are a lot of characters here, so many it felt like I needed a scorecard to keep track of them all. All those characters and details kept cluttering up the story at times and took me out of the story, which was not what I enjoy when I read a new book.

THE DROSTEN’S CURSE is a hit or a miss for me. I loved it had captured the essence of the fourth Doctor yet the story itself kept bouncing all over the place. As much as I wanted to rate this book higher, I just couldn’t due to the mixed bag of story pacing that went from one extreme to another to way more characters than needed. If you enjoy classic Doctor Who then you might enjoy a trip with the fourth Doctor. Unfortunately for me, THE DROSTEN’S CURSE wasn’t a grand adventure as I would have liked.

The place: Persia. The time: fifth-century BC. The Jews were threatened with genocide. A decree ordered the extermination of young and old, women and children. The book of Esther describes how this crisis was averted through the bravery of Esther, the wisdom of Mordecai and the unity of the Jewish people. Debra Reid's approachable commentary helps us see even more clearly in the book of Esther the God who quietly --and sometimes unexpectedly-- works behind the scenes to order the events of our lives. This completely new volume replaces the previous editon of Esther in the Tyndale Commentary series written by Joyce Baldwin.

    Review
"An accessible and thought-provoking reference work." (Robert Andy Gowins, Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, September 2009)

"[Reid] successfully offers her an integrated reading of the Esther story without delving into in-depth scholarly debates, while preserving a good sense of accuracy in interpretation." (S. Tatu, Journal for the Study of the Old Testament, 2009)

". . .highly recommended for community library religious collections." (James A. Cox, The Midwest Book Review, July 2008)

"The Tyndale volumes have long been the premier shorter-length commentary series on both Testaments throughout the English-speaking world." (Craig Blomberg, Denver Seminary)

"Tyndale commentaries are always useful, not least because they focus so clearly on the text of Scripture, and do not fall into the trap of paying too much attention to other commentaries and not enough to the scriptural text they are intended to expound and explain. So they retain their usefulness for preachers, Bible study leaders and for all readers of the Bible." (Peter Adam, principal, Ridley College, Melbourne, Australia)

"Within its constraints, this series includes some outstanding volumes." (D. A. Carson, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School)

"There simply is no series of medium-length commentaries that approaches the excellence of the Tyndale commentaries." (Donald A. Hagner, Fuller Theological Seminary)

Love this series for what it is
    By Aaron R. Smith
Love this series for what it is, short and sweet. This series is probably the most concise of the more technical commentaries, but yet have a lot of depth to them. This one has a whopping (for this series) 50+ page introduction, but it was all very well written, has a lot of insightful comments, and the whole commentary was a great tool in a series when I preached through the book of Esther. It also has as an appendix all of the Greek additions that were used in the apocrypha. Used along side the NIV Application Commentary on Esther by Karen H. Jobes, a person should not be left with any text related questions unanswered.

... strong and that is because the editors sought the best available commentators

The entire Tyndale series is strong and that is because the editors sought the best available commentators. I bought this volume in order to complete my set.

    Wonderful commentary
    By Jimmy R. Reagan
This is the first volume in the latest round of revisions in the outstanding Tyndale Old Testament Commentary (TOTC) series. The editorship has fallen into the capable hands of David Firth. Debra Reid supplies this replacement of the well-respected Baldwin volume in a winning way.

The Introduction, in 55 pages, covers the bases well for a volume of this size. If you are like me, you do not the excessive discussion on the literary style of the book as it often appears a charade to attack the historicity of Esther. Still, Reid covers what one must know to realize what scholars debate here. Canonization issues are sufficiently covered too.

I gleaned more when Reid turned to a discussion of style. She taught me several things I had not noticed before. Thinks like there is little direct speech in Esther, or how key the narrator is as compared to, say, Ruth, and character discussions are all very fascinating.

The commentary proper is even better still. The unique thing was the female perspective. There was no capitulation to feminism, but deep insights throughout. All in all, this is a fine, economical volume and I recommend it.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

How to Live: Or A Life of Montaigne in One Question and Twenty Attempts at an Answer, by Sarah Bakewell

Winner of the 2010 National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography

How to get along with people, how to deal with violence, how to adjust to losing someone you love—such questions arise in most people’s lives. They are all versions of a bigger question: How do you live? This question obsessed Renaissance writers, none more than Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, considered by many to be the first truly modern individual. He wrote free-roaming explorations of his thoughts and experience, unlike anything written before. More than four hundred years later, Montaigne’s honesty and charm still draw people to him. Readers come to him in search of companionship, wisdom, and entertainment —and in search of themselves. Just as they will to this spirited and singular biography.

*Starred Review* In a wide-ranging intellectual career, Michel de Montaigne found no knowledge so hard to acquire as the knowledge of how to live this life well. By casting her biography of the writer as 20 chapters, each focused on a different answer to the question How to live? Bakewell limns Montaigne’s ceaseless pursuit of this most elusive knowledge. Embedded in the 20 life-knowledge responses, readers will find essential facts—when and where Montaigne was born, how and whom he married, how he became mayor of Bordeaux, how he managed a public life in a time of lethal religious and political passions. But Bakewell keeps the focus on the inner evolution of the acute mind informing Montaigne’s charmingly digressive and tolerantly skeptical essays. Flexible and curious, this was a mind at home contemplating the morality of cannibals, the meaning of his own near-death experience, and the puzzlingly human behavior of animals. And though Montaigne has identified his own personality as his overarching topic, Bakewell marvels at the way Montaigne’s prose has enchanted diverse readers—Hazlitt and Sterne, Woolf and Gide—with their own reflections. Because Montaigne’s capacious mirror still captivates many, this insightful life study will win high praise from both scholars and general readers. --Bryce Christensen

    Review
“This charming biography shuffles incidents from Montaigne’s life and essays into twenty thematic chapters…Bakewell clearly relishes the anthropological anecdotes that enliven Montaigne’s work, but she handles equally well both his philosophical influences and the readers and interpreters who have guided the reception of the essays.” —The New Yorker

“Serious, engaging, and so infectiously in love with its subject that I found myself racing to finish so I could start rereading the Essays themselves…It is hard to imagine a better introduction—or reintroduction—to Montaigne than Bakewell’s book.” —Lorin Stein, Harper’s Magazine

“Ms. Bakewell’s new book, How to Live, is a biography, but in the form of a delightful conversation across the centuries.” —The New York Times

“So artful is Bakewell’s account of [Montaigne] that even skeptical readers may well come to share her admiration.” —The New York Times Book Review

“Extraordinary…a miracle of complex, revelatory organization, for as Bakewell moves along she provides a brilliant demonstration of the alchemy of historical viewpoint.” —Boston Globe

“Well, How to Live is a superb book, original, engaging, thorough, ambitious, and wise.” —Nick Hornby, in the November/December 2010 issue of The Believer

“In How to Live, an affectionate introduction to the author, Bakewell argues that, far from being a dusty old philosopher, Montaigne has never been more relevant—a 16th-century blogger, as she would have it—and so must be read, quite simply, ‘in order to live’…Bakewell is a wry and intelligent guide.” —The Daily Beast

“Witty, unorthodox…How to Live is a history of ideas told entirely on the ground, never divorced from the people thinking them. It hews close to Montaigne’s own preoccupations, especially his playful uncertainty – Bakewell is a stickler for what we can’t know. …How to Live is a delight…” —The Plain Dealer

“This book will have new readers excited to be acquainted to Montaigne’s life and ideas, and may even stir their curiosity to read more about the ancient Greek philosophers who influenced his writing. How to Live is a great companion to Montaigne’s essays, and even a great stand-alone.” —San Francisco Book Review

“A bright, genial, and generous introduction to the master’s methods.” —Kirkus Reviews

“[Bakewell reveals] one of literature's enduring figures as an idiosyncratic, humane, and surprisingly modern force.” —Publisher’s Weekly (starred)

“As described by Sarah Bakewell in her suavely enlightening How to Live, or A Life of Montaigne in One Question and Twenty Attempts at an Answer Montaigne is, with Walt Whitman, among the most congenial of literary giants, inclined to shrug over the inevitability of human failings and the last man to accuse anyone of self-absorption. His great subject, after all, was himself.” —Laura Miller, Salon.com

“Lively and fascinating . . . How To Live takes its place as the most enjoyable introduction to Montaigne in the English language.” —The Times Literary Supplement

“Splendidly conceived and exquisitely written . . . enormously absorbing.” —Sunday Times

“How to Live will delight and illuminate.” —The Independent

“It is ultimately [Montaigne’s] life-loving vivacity that Bakewell succeeds in communicating to her readers.” —The Observer

“This subtle and surprising book manages the trick of conversing in a frank and friendly manner with its centuries-old literary giant, as with a contemporary, while helpfully placing Montaigne in a historical context.  The affection of the author for her subject is palpable and infectious.” —Phillip Lopate, author of The Art of the Personal Essay

“An intellectually lively treatment of a Renaissance giant and his world.” —Saturday Telegraph

“Like recent books on Proust, Joyce, and Austen, How to Live skillfully plucks a life-guide from the incessant flux of Montaigne’s prose . . . A superb, spirited introduction to the master.” —The Guardian

“[How to Live] is written in the form of a delightful conversation across the ages with one of the most appealing, likeable writers who ever lived.” —Independent Mail

"More than just a straightforward biography of Michel de Montaigne, Sarah Bakewell cleverly breaks away from chronology to explore the fundamental questions of living through the philosophy, beliefs, essays and experiences of the French master we often reference as the “father” of “essay.”—Cerise Press

"[A] must-read in its entirety." —Brainpickings

"Bakewell’s writing style is equal parts fluid and fascinating." —The Flâneur’s Turtle

    A life of the Essays
    By J. W. Kennedy
This is not so much a biography of Michel de Montaigne as it is a biography of his book ... which is a legitimate approach since Montaigne himself described the Essays as a portrait of himself, a model of the author in text form. So, Ms. Bakewell has given us many facts about Montaigne's life as well as chronicling the fortunes of the Essays during his life as well as the endless revisions and re-interpretations that occurred after his death. The story is told in true Montaignian fashion, out of chronological order and with numerous digressions, with chapter headings that consist of twenty hypothetical answers to the book's central question: "How to live?" Unlike Montaigne, the content of each chapter stays (mostly) relevant to the subject in its heading. The back of the book contains a brief timeline, an index, and a list of notes. (Strangely these numbered notes are not indicated in the text, making them essentially useless; but that may just be an idiosyncrasy of the Uncorrected Proof copy which I read.)

I first discovered Montaigne when I happened upon the Essays in the History section of the bookstore. I knew nothing about him, but the dust-jacket blurb described him as the inventor of the essay, literature's first "modern" writer, an affable gentleman who good-naturedly natters on at length about any topic that catches his fancy (his favorite subject being himself). His mind wanders and his pen follows it wherever it happens to go. I bought the book, expecting nothing more than to be entertained, and was amazed to discover how emotionally uplifting it was. Montaigne apparently did not wish to consider himself a "philosopher" yet that's what he seemed to be. Here's an educated, well-read guy with an agreeable, easygoing manner .. completely scatterbrained and yet so WISE .. he seemed to have come to grips with his own mortality and figured out all of life's Big Questions, over 400 years ago. I was impressed. I found him to be intensely relevant and overflowing with thoughts and opinions that made So Much Sense, they perfectly matched my own.

Now Ms. Bakewell's book makes it clear that my Montaigne experience is typical. Many of the great and not-so-great minds of Western civilization (since 1580) have read the Essays and gotten the eerie impression that it was written specifically for them. Many of these stories are told briefly in the book, but the biggest section is devoted to Pascal and Descartes who were strongly influenced in a _negative_ way by Montaigne. Much of their most memorable work was a reaction against him. It's truly the mark of a classic when a book continues to be so influential centuries after the author's death.

_How to Live_ is not "necessary" reading by any means (you can get full enjoyment from the Essays without knowing any of this background information) but it does add some value by shedding light on the collective experience of people reading and reacting to the Essays throughout history. It is written in an approachable, readable style and is very respectful of its subject. I can recommend it as an introduction or a companion to the Essays.

    More Than Just a Biography
    By KC
You've heard of hybrid cars? Get ready for the hybrid biography. Sarah Bakewell's luminous HOW TO LIVE is just that -- an inspired collision of biography, philosophy, history, rhetoric, and literary criticism, all sprinkled with a dollop of self-help. That's right, Bakewell shows how seamlessly Michel Eyquem de Montaigne can enter the 21st century and offer advice to the harried reader. Montaigne, after all, was anything BUT harried. Calm, cool, collected, stoic. That was our man in France.

Now most readers undertake a biography because they are interested in the subject. I was more intrigued by the critical buzz Bakewell's book garnered in the press. And so it was that I got to know Montaigne, famous author of the ESSAYS, through Bakewell's unique design of 20 chapters all based on the question "How to Live?" with a different answer. They are, in order, "Don't Worry About Death," "Pay Attention," "Be Born" (Editor's Note: Very funny), "Read A Lot, Forget Most of What You Read, and Be Slow-Witted," "Survive Love and Loss," "Use Little Tricks," "Question Everything," "Keep a Private Room Behind the Shop," "Be Convivial: Live With Others," "Wake From the Sleep of Habit," "Live Temperately," "Do Something No One Has Done Before," "Do a Good Job, But Not TOO Good a Job," "Philosophize Only by Accident," "Reflect on Everything; Regret Nothing," "Be Ordinary and Imperfect" (Editor's Note: Easy!), "Give Up Control," and "Let Life Be Its Own Answer." If those topics intrigue you in any way, so will this book.

What did I learn? Of course, as expected, a lot about Montaigne's life as that is the main thread. The bonuses for me were things like short but essential lessons in philosophies that influenced Montaigne (Stoics, Epicureans, Skeptics) and in personalities that he in turn influenced or outraged (Pascal, Rousseau, Voltaire, Nietzsche, etc.). Also, there was the history lesson on 16th-century France's religious wars (Catholics v. Protestants). Bloody good. And then there were all the snippets from Montaigne's essays themselves. Some readers may want to read more by tackling the behemoth ESSAYS after this book. Others may feel that this sampler is sufficient unto itself -- after all, you come out more knowledgeable about the man, his approach toward life, his writing style, and even his translators.

Overall, it's an unusually refreshing run at what should have been staidly-boring material. Bakewell's theme is that Montaigne is more interesting and timeless than you think. Her hybrid biography proves the point by meeting the same criteria. If you have any interest in the past, essay-writing, philosophy, religion, politics, and the common man as championed by a most unusual man, HOW TO LIVE is your book.

The 16th Century is Closer Than We Thought
    By JMB1014
Sarah Bakewell's book on Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533-1592) is worthwhile in large part because Montaigne is not as widely read as he deserves to be; her work may help redress that situation. Wisely, she gives readers to understand that they may see themselves in Montaigne's Essays: She understands the narcissism that pervades our culture. It is fascinating - and rather suggestive - that so many people claim to see themselves in the writings of a thoroughgoing skeptic.

Her theme is "how to live" - a subject on which Montaigne is full of insights, though he never presumes to offer advice. In 20 chapters, Ms. Bakewell explores approaches to life derived from Montaigne, such as "Be ordinary and imperfect," "See the world," "Guard your humanity," "Wake from the sleep of habit," "Let life be its own answer," and perhaps most characteristically for Montaigne, "Question everything." If this smacks of the self-help book, don't be deceived. Montaigne is talking about his life, not yours. If you look in his Essays for tips on living, you will not be alone, though his purpose is to describe, not prescribe.

I will not attempt a discussion of Montaigne's Essays here. They have been well reviewed elsewhere. Suffice it to say that he was a learned and yet highly sympathetic member of the French nobility and man of affairs who gave up his public life and duties to think, read, and write. He is the author of insightful, often delightful, essays on all kinds of things - even cannibals.

Ms. Bakewell is more than a casual student of Montaigne and her lively study is more than just a history of his collection of essays. She offers a clear-eyed though necessarily incomplete view of Montaigne's personality, to the extent it can be made out from this remove. She also spends substantial time on Montaigne's experiences with death, for instance, and this may be valuable to modern readers, many of whom, I suspect, would just as soon avoid that subject altogether. Ms. Bakewell brushes in some of the intellectual, historical, religious, and political background and context with which Montaigne was familiar, as by commenting on Stoicism, Epicureanism and Skepticism, e.g. The reader thereby gets a better understanding of the skeptical tradition to which Montaigne was a major contributor. Finally, there are numerous useful and interesting illustrations, even if they are not generally of the best quality. There's even a picture of a bottle of wine made at the estates near Bordeaux over which Montaigne presided. Oenophiles will note the connection between Chateau d' Yquem, where a spectacular sweet wine is made, and a branch of Montaigne's family from which one of his names originated: Eyquem.

I had hoped for a more substantial discussion of Montaigne's longest and perhaps most important essay, "A Defense of Raymond Sebond," also called "An Apology for Raymond Sebond." It is a somewhat confusing piece for a lay reader to confront. Ms. Bakewell gives it short shrift. And although she relies exclusively on the Frame translation, which is excellent, as long as she was preparing a book on Montaigne for the modern reader, she might have commented on other translations, such as the Screech translation, to give us an idea of their respective strengths and weaknesses. (N.B: I find that Gore Vidal wrote an excellent essay on Montaigne and briefly compared the Frame and Screech translations. The essay was originally published in the Times Literary Supplement of June 26, 1992. It has been reprinted in The Selected Essays of Gore Vidal, Jay Parini, Ed., Vintage paperback 2009.)

I do disagree with another reviewer's somewhat breezy conclusion that Montaigne is "scatter-brained." Montaigne was one of the first exponents of the so-called stream of consciousness and of course part of what makes him so engaging is following that stream around bends, over rapids and through deep pools. Montaigne would scarcely be considered the father of the essay, let alone one of the great writers of the western tradition, if he were merely scatter-brained. Much more recent writers, notably Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, made use of the stream of consciousness. They are not normally accused of being scatter-brained.

Incidentally, it is becoming more common for scholars who want to appeal to a broad audience to put notes at the end of the book, listed by page number, without printing the corresponding numbers in the text. I do not agree that the notes are therefore useless. This practice simultaneously meets the needs of students and scholars, who want the notes, and of general readers who hate being distracted by them. William Lee Miller, a distinguished historian at the University of Virginia, handles his notes in the same way in his excellent study of Lincoln, "President Lincoln: The Duty of a Statesman."

Based on the same principles as Learn Latin, Peter Jones's bestselling book of the hugely popular Daily Telegraph series, this book teaches you enough Greek in 20 chapters to be able to read some real ancient Greek – one of the world's greatest languages, used by one of the world's greatest cultures. By the end of the course you will be able to read passages from the New Testament and from Classical Greek literature, including extracts from Socrates' speech on trial for his life recorded by Plato, Sophocles' Antigone, and the tragic end to the Athenian expedition to Sicily described by the historian Thucydides – and much else.

    so so
    By Furio
Some reviews about this handbook sound quite enthusiastic, a few do not.

First of all, I should like to make clear that I am not new to studying ancient and modern languages, both by myself or with a teacher.

I have decided to take up Greek seriously (a long standing wish) on my own to give my passion for historical lingustics a sounder basis and I bought several British and American textbooks as there is no self study material in Italian.

There is no doubt about Dr Jones being competent, that is wholly out of question. I like his humour too, his light hearted way of illustrating grammar as if it were real fun: I may be a linguist in the core but I find learning declensions by heart just a little more easy than a common high school pupil would therefore heartily welcoming any device that can make things more palatable.

Up to chapter five (included) things are just fine. I do not like (well, I abhor) the leaving the accents aside, but this is very common way in Anglo-american textbooks: I see no reason why it should be so but so it is and one cannot blame Dr Jones too much for doing just the same.
Accents aside, learning is easy and entertaining and you really get the impression of making the most of your time.

From chapter six things get sticky. Grammar is still nicely illustrated but the examples and excercises are no longer up to the task of making you learn what has been so entertainingly explained. Reasoning leads one near to nowhere: one must begin learning by heart and doing the (few) excercises again and again in the attempt of memorizing vocabulary and constructions.

An even stickier problem is the choice of readings. Probably in the attempt of confronting his reader with real texts to awaken his/her interest, Dr Jones is just too eager in introducing nearly unadulterated Greek passages.
Such passages must be preceded by discouragingly long vocabulary lists not to mention the fact that this vocabulary is seldom useful later on; this is why I took no pleasure in reading Thucidides or Socrates as boasted on the book cover.

A minor but irritating fault is the lack of answer key translation for those readings taken from the New Testament. "Use your Bible" is not satisfactory for someone who wishes a self contained handbook, not to mention that there are several translations of the Bible and that, for the purpose of learning, a literal if unattractive translation could be of more use than the usual ones.

In my opinion one could use the first chapters of this book to break the ice but should go on with a different text or be prepared for a lot of self imposed supplementary work.

    Keeps it lively and fun
    By David V. Ready
Peter Jones makes a potentially dry subject a great deal of fun. He weaves his dry sense of humor into the lessons, with the occasional anachronistic pun thrown in there for good effect. I really love his teaching style.

I have just finished the work and can now read Greek at the elementary level (Jan 29 2010)

    Great for learning and review
    By Cade
I have the earlier 1999 printing of this book, and have recently gone back and worked through it again for a review of the basics. I'm well studied in French, German and Latin, using more "formal" books for those languages. I regret that I didn't use Jones' Latin book (although I'm contemplating getting it just for the fun of it), and that there aren't comparable texts for modern languages!

Jones is not only an entertaining teacher (even in print), but a wise one. As other reviewers have said, he organizes otherwise daunting information in small, easily grasped nuggets. He also keeps the pace moving along, so that the self-study doesn't become laborious. It does get a little more difficult midway through: after chapter 11, you'll find yourself multitasking with reviewing (so not to forget) past vocabulary and grammar, tackling new material, and trying not to get frustrated with increasingly more complex exercises. Yet fret not, as Jones makes this inevitable hump in learning any language as easy and accessible as possible (mind you, he warns us of this challenge at the start).

My only gripe, which isn't really a bad one, is that I found both times through the book that once I got past chapter 13, I actually wanted more exercises and more reading segments. Somehow, I felt a little in disbelief that I had actually covered very much and wanted the reassurance. However, despite seeming "lightweight" by comparison to other texts, the book does cover a significant amount of essential Greek vocabulary and grammar that any beginner needs. The first time through, I found I was able to read many Greek texts with the only a lexicon for unfamiliar vocabulary. The second time through, I was even more impressed with how pithy and fun yet thorough the text is, which made it not just a great introductory text, but the prefect method for review.
