thorough coverage of statistical methods used in epidemiology

This second edition is a massive text of over 800 pages that covers thoroughly the various study designs and statistical analysis methods used in Epidemiology. I have not seen the first edition so if you are interested in contrasting it with the first edition, the back cover gives a summary of the subjects that are added. This is a very practical book that avoids advanced mathematics and proofs and concentrates on basic math and practical results. Real data is used in the examples including the Scottish Heart Health Study data. The final chapter covers the important issues in meta-analyses.

Excellent pres. of epi & data-analysis -mostly for students

This book can both be used as a first time introduction to epidemiology and the most popular statistical methods employed in health research, but also for looking up things when you need it, since it is actually quite thorough on a lot of subjects in the field. This is, however, not the best thing about the book.
The best thing about it is that it is very well-written - neither too complicated and unstructured, or too common-sense to the point where you get annoyed because the author never gets to the point. I'm sure that some readers will be find that Woodward has spend to many pages on the statistical part - at least if they expect to find a pure epidemiology-textbook - but the data analysis part is also very well-written and quite comprehensible. So even if you're not planning on spending the rest of your life with data analysis, this book can provide you wih an understanding of this part of epidemiological research as well, which will make the understanding of the field as a whole much better.

Great reference book for pharmaco-epidemiology

As an analyst regularly working on epidemiological studies of prescription drug safety, I find this an excellent reference book. It's clearly written with plentiful examples to help the reader understand study design and applying methods in data analysis. I reach for this book much more regularly than the classic Modern Epidemiology by Rothman et al.

A Wonderful Take on Fairy Tales

This is a wonderful take on fairy tales from two of my favorite gals, Betty and Veronica. All the stories are lovely and really incorporate the Archie universe in well. They also had interesting twists. In the Beauty and the Beast and Snow White adaption, Veronica is bad and Betty is good. In the other three tales, Veronica and Betty are sisters, and Cheryl Blossom appears as the big baddie in these tales. It was an interesting take. Each tale contains a forward by author and illustrator Dan Parent, who brought these wonderful tales to life. I would highly recommend this book for children and adults of all ages.

I love the Betty and Veronica storybooks, putting a fresh spin on the classic fairy tales (particularly as reworked into movies of the past several years). Best of all, this volume features several stories with fan fav Cheryl Blossom, as well as some lovely paintings as frontpieces by contemporary artists.

Lack of Heart

Going wrong with the "Chrissy Institute" is hard. The routine is the same; boy gets to the institute and is forced to become a "proper young lady". Usual punishments, standard humiliation and huge amounts of cross-dressing scenes are nicely described. Even though, this book is a little disappointing compared to other books in the series due to the huge amount of "feminized" boy to "real" boy relationships described (easily 60% of the whole story is dedicated to these scenes). There is nothing wrong on those relationships as long as they don't take the place of other equally interesting scenes, such as how hormones change their bodies or their male-to-female psychological transformation.

The illustrations are also disappointing: not enough and not a full portrait of what the character is experiencing (the "cartoon" style shown on the cover is what you get).

Good overall, but one of the most heartless stories of the series.

If he didn't want to work for his success. He had to earn it in other ways. By going to special school that transforms boys into beautiful girl. So they can be more products as models, actress, and young trophy wives. Thou Elliot couldn't believe that his father would it. But his father was far to busy for him in Europe. So his days of manhood was starting to slip way. And a new life of womanhood started to appear. Thou part of him try his hardest. To fight the education and training. By turning him to girl.

About the Author
Leslie Morgan is Professor and Chair, Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. She has authored or co-authored three previous books and has also published over 30 articles and book chapters. Her research has focused on a variety of issues related to the aging of the population and issues confronting older persons, including widowhood, economic well-being, family relationships, and housing alternatives.

Suzanne R. Kunkel, PhD, is Director, Scripps Gerontology Center and Professor, Department of Sociology and Gerontology, Miami University. She has been principal investigator or co-investigator on local, state, federal, and foundation grants totaling more than $3.5 million. She received the Hiram Friedsam Mentorship Award from AGHE, and is currently Treasurer of GSA. Dr. Kunkel was co-author (with Leslie Morgan) of all previous editions of Aging, Society, and the Life Course. With Frank Whittington and Erdman Palmore, she co-edited the most recent edition of the International Handbook on Aging, co-edited with Frank Whittington the Spring 2013 edition of Generations focusing on global aging, and co-authored with Frank Whittington and Scott Brown a 2014 textbook, Global Aging: Comparative Perspectives on Aging and the Life Course. She has published more than 40 articles, books, and book chapters, and more than 30 research monographs on the aging network, innovations in the delivery of home care, population projections, global aging, and gerontology education.

In 1812, Lady Caroline Lamb, wife of a prominent politician and future Prime Minister, began a tempestuous affair with Lord Byron, a liaison that shocked Lamb's contemporaries. Finally, when he became tired of Lamb, Byron cruelly broke off the relationship, and in Glenarvon (1816) Lamb sought revenge.

Set against the backdrop of the violent Irish Revolution of 1798, Glenarvon tells the story of the doomed love of the married Lady Calantha for the dashing revolutionary Lord Glenarvon. Though published anonymously, contemporary readers immediately recognised in Calantha and Glenarvon the counterparts of Lamb and Byron and in many of the minor characters satiric portraits of some of the leading lights of London high society. The novel became an instant success, going through numerous editions and resulting in Lamb's being blackballed from fashionable society.

The Valancourt Books edition includes the unabridged text of the first edition as well as Lamb's preface from the expurgated second edition. This edition also features a new introduction and notes by Deborah Lutz and an index to characters in Glenarvon and their real-life counterparts.

Deborah Lutz is an Associate Professor of Victorian Literature and Culture at Long Island University, C. W. Post Campus. She is the author of Pleasure Bound: Victorian Sex Rebels and the New Eroticism (2011) and The Dangerous Lover: Gothic Villains, Byronism, and the Nineteenth-Century Seduction Narrative (2006).

This book is interesting from a historical perspective but that is really all. What Lady Caroline Lamb needed was a damn good editor as Glenarvon is a long and turgid read. I doubt there would be any interest in this book now were it not for the fact that she wrote it as a roman a clef - a book with thinly disguised portraits of many of Regency London's celebrities - and of course primarily about her relationship with the great poet Byron.
Did I say her relationship? Well not quite. This is a highly Gothic rendition of their relationship. There was no attempt to present it as anything but fiction - but those in know tried to pick out the facts from the overlay of fictional story-telling. For instance a letter she used verbatim in here is said to have been written to her by Byron.
This edition has a marvellous introduction which puts the novel in context with the times and Lamb's life and helps us as readers understand the links between real life and fiction. But this is an uneasy novel, poorly paced, with a tendency to maudlin pathos and overwrought chest-beating. It is interspersed with sections of intentional humour - Lamb clearly had great talent - but much of it was for the over-dramatic. Its a pity she wasn't taken in hand by her editor then as there are the makings of a very good novel in amongst the pages of dross. Overall the the novel is very Gothic and really only of interest to those who have an interest in Byron or Lamb herself. Byron, is of course Glenarvon the anti-hero of the novel and Lady Caroline the poor victimised Calantha.
In short the novel is all about poor old Calantha who marries one man, but is seduced by another (Glenarvon) who also masquerades under another evil persona. Their are ruined castles galore, quivering breasts, breathless terror - and the Irish rebellion of the late 1790's makes a bit of showing as well.
Lamb wrote two more novels after this neither of which have been reprinted - they were both, it seems overwritten as well, but without the added advantage of dozens of personality portraits of real people to ensure the successful marketing of the book. . Glenarvon was written, Lamb claims, as an apology to Byron, but marked the end of her acceptability amongst the elite of London society. She had overstepped the limit of social acceptibility once too often.
One of the oddest things about all this is that although we know Lamb as the lover of Byron, the affair was of the briefest - hardly lasting more than four months in the summer of 1812. She became completely obsessed with him after that and he had no peace from her. He eventually left London just before this book was published and died overseas fighting for the Greek cause in 1824. Lamb died 4 years later in 1828. I wonder if we should have known much of her at all were it not for those brief three months?

Only if you have your own "Romantics" love affair

As most people know, Glenarvon tells the story of Lamb's real life love affair with Lord Byron, an experience which deeply touched her and affected the rest of her life.

However, the book is much more than a tawdry kiss-and-tell expose, as Lamb shows that she appreciates Romantic sensibilities as much as her erstwhile lover. Some people have described the book as unreadable, and at the time it was first published it was dismissed as little more than scandalous revelation; although it can be confusing at times, and is not a straightforward retelling of the affair, it is well worth persevering with.

The book strays into the realms of fantasy, and if you are reading it purely as historical research it can be difficult to extricate who's who, as sometimes one real-life character resembles two characters in the book, or vice versa. The lead parts are, however, fairly obvious. Calantha is Lamb herself, Lord Avondale is her husband William Lamb, and Glenarvon her lover Byron.

As the story continues the plot becomes more and more tangled, and although it often strays beyond the realms of reality, it is interesting when compared with other fictitious representations of Byron, particularly that of Polidori's "Vampyre"

The novel reveals much more about Lamb than it does about Byron, and in my opinion serves to redeem her from the position of deranged groupie that history has assigned her. It reveals interesting details about her early life, perhaps not always taken into consideration when examining here character. Moreover this book shows her to be intelligent, as it is far from an hysterical romance.

I would definitely recommend the book to those with an interest in the Romantics, and most particularly an interest in Byron.

Lady Caroline Lamb supposedly sat in a room and dictated this book to a gentleman who put it to paper, and he was horrified that such a story could come from feminine lips! It was an attempt to revenge herself on Byron after he was bored with their affair, and many figures in popular society recognized themselves satirized in its pages. This is certainly the best edition of GLENARVON I have come across, and the introduction is keen and informative as well. I highly recommend this text to anyone interested in Romantic, Gothic, or early 19th Century fiction.

Accounts of more famous serial killers like Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer may have ghoulish entertainment value, but I agree with writer Darcy O'Brien that this meticulously factual study of child sex-murderer Arthur Shawcross "comes closer to capturing the psychology of a serial killer than anything else I've ever read." The strength of this book (semi-finalist for a 1994 Edgar Award) comes first from the quality of the materials--including first-person interviews with the killer's wives, girlfriends, co-workers, police officers, therapists, and even a prostitute who "played dead" for Shawcross--and second, from Olsen's ability to weave the information into a highly readable story that reveals, above all, the ineffectiveness of our system of rehabilitation and parole. Not only should it have been obvious to everyone, long before he killed anyone, that Shawcross was a ticking bomb of sexual sadism, but he should never have been released from prison to kill again.

An experienced and skilled writer, Olsen ( Predator ) proves himself equal to the formidable task of studying serial killer Arthur Shawcross. Born in 1945 in upstate New York, Shawcross was perceived as different even in childhood (his classmates dubbed him "Oddie," and elementary school officials called for mental health evaluations). In the early '70s he murdered two children and was sentenced to up to 25 years in prison; he served less than 15 years before he was paroled in 1987. He was difficult to place--townspeople drove him out as soon as his past became known. After three such episodes, parole officials sent him surreptitiously to Rochester, N.Y., where he killed at least 11 prostitutes. He was arrested in 1990 and eventually sentenced to 250 years in prison. During the trial, he claimed that he had been physically and sexually abused by his mother (untrue, the authorities concluded) and that he had committed horrible atrocities in Vietnam (probably untrue). He did not fit the classic pattern of the sociopath, nor did he seem either schizophrenic or paranoid. It remained for psychiatrist Richard Kraus to hypothesize that physiology was the basis for Shawcross's behavior--he diagnosed Shawcross as suffering from a metabolic ailment known as pyroluria and an abnormal genetic constitution. Told by Olsen with contributions from others affected by Shawcross's crimes, the story is a triumph of true-crime writing. Olsen, author of Predator ( LJ 4/1/91), recounts Shawcross's story through well-organized interviews with his family, his victims' families, and the police. But the book is not solely a true crime account; it is, in addition, a medical mystery. Was there some flaw in Shawcross's makeup that caused him to kill? The unexpected hero is psychiatrist Richard Kraus, who tests and interrogates his client until he comes up with a diagnosis. "Shawcross was misbegotten, doomed to be different from the beginning." He is "a gray little plexus of misery... just sad." Highly recommended for true crime collections.

Story a Five.....Too many errors brings it to a four.

A very good book. Research was thorough and presented in an interesting way. In reading other people's reviews for previous works when they downgrade the rating because of formatting or other errors I always got a little irritated. I guess I had been lucky and never really got a Kindle book that had so many errors that it hurt the quality of the book. This is the first time. So many formatting errors on the Kindle edition. You'd be reading along and in the middle of the page there would be an out of place footnote. Then a few out of place words. Then you wound up back where you should be. Exclamation points, quotation marks, asterix, unneeded spaces between words, space in words.... Very frustrating. The actual story. . . a five....the errors in formatting are just too numerous for it to go without a remark and a downgrade. Should be withdrawn, reformatted, and resubmitted.

Unrelenting Horror

Arthur Shawcross is to be pitied, but you just cannot. From the time he was a child, he knew he was "different," but never knew why, nor did he receive any insights by family or counselors. Shawcross grew up in a tiny village in upstate New York, quit school in the 9th grade after being held back twice, served in the Army and then his life fell apart. He brutally murdered 10-year old Jack Blake, for which he was suspected but never arrested. He subsequently murdered 8-year old Karen Hill and was convicted. After plea-bargaining, he received a 25-year sentence of which he served 14+ years and was released on parole.
Why was he released? Basically because he was cunning and shrewd. He did everything he could to be a model prisoner, and none of the mental health team could diagnose him. Though a few psychologists thought he should never be allowed to live in an open society, there was little they could do to hold him beyond 15 years. Shortly after his release, he began a two-year killing spree, murdering 11 prostitutes before being captured. I had the strong feeling there were many more murders that we will never know about.
Jack Olsen takes us through Arthur's life via an oral history and taped Q and A interview with Shawcross. The book is brilliant. By letting the people closest to Shawcross tell their stories in their own words, interwoven with dispassionate analysis, the author rivets our attention and interest. At the conclusion, a dogged psychiatrist finally uncovers that Arthur has a severe biological impairment, an extra Y chromosome and a little known compound that is a marker for violent behavior. The two together were biological dynamite.
Arthur Shawcross's story is fascinating. It brings to the forefront "nature vs. nurture" arguments. It appears Arthur would have been no different regardless of where and how he had been raised. Mr. Olson brings Arthur, his family and friends, and his victims brilliantly to life.

Disturbing

I found this book very disturbing and I have read many books on serial killers. I thought Arthur Shawcross was one of the most fascinating serial killers until I read this book. It is very well written and unfortunatley you get to know the families / friends of the victims which makes it very difficult to read without becoming emotional, especially concerning his child victims - God rest their souls - I take my hat off to Jack Olsen and the way he wrote a brilliant account, with victims and families in mind, of one very sick individual. Be ready to have your world rocked and faith in humanity almost lost. I will never read anything on Arthur Shawcross again - maybe this is in respect to his victims or just plain disgust with one man who was let loose on society thanks to an overcrowded prison system and parol officers who did not have enough information to make such a decision. You really feel for the victims in this one - very upsetting. A really, really good read.

Darla grew up and still lives in the rural Iowa communities of Roland and Story City. She is the mother of 3 adult children. Her educational background is in Graphic Design from Iowa State University. Now that her children are grown, most of her free time is spent drawing or doing some form of Arts & Crafts project - she is now following her dreams! She has so many drawings accumulated, that she recently decided to finally start putting them out for other's to color and to enjoy in the form of coloring books.

This book has so many wonderful drawings! The artist allows you to doodle your own ideas or simply color the picture, a happy medium for everyone. I lost hours coloring and can't wait to do more!

AMAZING BOOK FOR ADULTS!

So this is a one of a kind coloring book. It has a story in the front with little doodles to color in and some very helpful information in the back along with more doodles. But the best lies within! This book is amazing to have as an adult. I opened it up and she gives you her style of the drawing which includes a ton of different textures and shading. Then, she gives you the chance to be unique and creative with the template she started with. Then, it rolls into different shapes, shades, and designs. One after the other you become more and more amazed at what she and you have drawn! Then you color it in and hang it up for everyone to see. Masterpiece after masterpiece it is worth your time and money! I loved it and can't wait until the next one is released!

Clearly written and well organized you sail through the history of a country that was establish as such by a powerful man, Leopold II who never went there.
