I found it one of the best diplomatic histories I have read

A first hand account of one of the most fascinating times in history. It is a clear, interesting, and enlightening view of the duties of an American Diplomatic Officer and the times he lived through. The crucial part that Belgium played in World War 1 and , of course, the action and attitudes of the Germans at that time are vividly portrayed. I found it one of the best diplomatic histories I have read.

About the Author

Fotis Rigas is Associate Professor, National Technical University of Athens, School of Chemical Engineering and has been a Visiting Professor at National Autonomous University of Mexico. His current research and academic activities are in the areas of process safety and bioremediation of contaminated sites. He has published or presented over 150 papers and book chapters in the fields of his activities and is a reviewer of papers in 36 international journals.

Paul Amyotte is a Professor of Chemical Engineering and the C.D. Howe Chair in Engineering at Dalhousie University in Canada. His research and practice interests are in the areas of inherent safety, process safety and dust explosion prevention and mitigation. He has published or presented over 200 papers in the field of industrial safety and is the Editor of the Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries. He is also author of another CRC Press book, Process Plants: A Handbook for Inherently Safer Design, Second Edition (2010).

Awesome Prayer Resource for Moms

I was so excited to see a new book on prayer by Priscilla Shirer, Fervent: A Woman's Battle Plan to Serious, Specific and Strategic Prayer.

Full confession here, I am rather the Priscilla Shirer fan. I find her books to be direct, practical and very scripture based. Having said that, this may just be my absolute favorite of all of her books. I judge how well I like a Christian book by how many little sticky flags I place on the pages. I often will quote these thoughts in my ministry (giving full credit of course). This one is covered in little purple flags!

I love the organization of this book. As usual, Ms. Shirer is very organized in the way she writes. She begins with a basic coverage of prayer and specifically regaining your passion for prayer. She then covers nine specific categories she believes we should be addressing in our prayer life: our focus, our identity, our family, our past, our fears, our purity, our pressures, our hearts and our relationships.

Each chapter begins with a little "If I were your enemy" thought. I loved these and have already quoted one on the Parenting Like Hannah Facebook page. It's a great way for her to frame a la C.S. Lewis how Satan must view his plans to derail us from the life God meant for us to live. The chapter is filled with her personal experiences and her insights based on scripture.

One of my favorite parts of this book is that it is filled with scripture. She not only gives the citations within the book, but provides the quotes as well. This is always my pet peace about Christian books - having to flip back and forth within the book or between the book and the Bible to check out scriptures. Kudos to her for making it easy. Sometimes she adds her own thoughts after the scripture, but often she lets them stand on their own.

I won't steal her thunder by quoting lots of passages. Let me just say this book is very practical, very well organized, very thought provoking and very scripture based. If you read my blog regularly, I rarely say you must absolutely own a book. I want to be respectful of your finances. I often say this book is worth reading, but to me that is very different from being a "must read". This in my opinion is one of those "must reads". It even has a tear out section in the back for prayers you can take with you wherever you go.

If you want help with your prayer life, I am sure there are plenty of resources that may help you. I personally would choose to purchase this one. I really think it has the tools you need to enrich, enhance and even jump start your prayer life.

This Means War!

Priscilla has written a book on prayer that is as practical as they come. It's not a theoretical dissertation on prayer. It's a nuts and bolts "let's get on our knees and get after it" guide. Step by step coverage of ten different areas of your life: passion, focus, identity, family, past, fears, purity, pressures, hurts and relationships. She includes numerous specific scriptures for each of these ten areas. If this book doesn't motivate you in the war against the enemy of your soul I don't know what will. "Prayer is the portal that brings the power of heaven down to earth. It is kryptonite to the enemy and to all his ploys against you....His reign of terror stops here. Stops now. He might keep coming, but he won't have victory anymore."

Other sections of this chapter deal with the protection against attacks, fear, investigation and the cost of cybercrime. Relevant legislation and legal bodies, which are used in cybercrime, are briefly described at the end of the chapter.
The second chapter deals with cyberwarfare and explains the difference between classic cybercrime and operations taking place in the modern inter-connected world. It tackles the following questions: who is committing cyberwarfare; who are the victims and who are the perpetrators? Countries which have an important role in cyberwarfare around the world, and the significant efforts being made to combat cyberwarfare on national and international levels, are mentioned.
The common points of cybercrime and cyberwarfare, the methods used to protect against them and the vision of the future of cybercrime and cyberwarfare are briefly described at the end of the book.

About the Authors

Igor Bernik is Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and Head of the Information Security Lab at the University of Maribor, Slovenia. He has written and contributed towards over 150 scientific articles and conference papers, and co-authored 4 books. His current research interests concern information/cybersecurity, cybercrime, cyberwarfare and cyberterrorism.

George In All His Unvarnished Glory

I bought this book because I love George S. Patton, and love reading about him. This book covers most of his life, the not so dramatic history making part. It contains diary and personal journal entries & letters with accompanying biographical text. Some of it's very mundane, and the earliest parts, well they are a bit of a bore. However, as the book progresses so does the man. Ok, so who cares that when he was a teenager he liked candy and ate too much of it? You see him grow from a boy to a man, in the process he becomes a very good writer. His descriptions of events and activities that occur during his life and early career are really very good. How primitive some of those Army outposts were. Traveling into Mexico to chase Pancho Villa, his descriptions of General Pershing, all very vivid.
I have always had a BIG CRUSH on Patton. He was Matinee Idol handsome in his youth, I mean such physical perfection (what can I say? He would not have had to ask me twice!). To my dismay, reading this book illustrated that he was not a very nice person. A social snob, conceited, self absorbed, selfish, tactless. Imagine your husband writing you that he had been propositioned by a prostitute "but told her no". Really, man? Wow.
Also, regarding the birth of his first child, "some dastardly person said it looked like me, which cannot be true because it is so ugly". NICE!!!!
Also the endlessly disparaging remarks about those fellow soldiers that were socially inferior. He spends a great deal of time looking down on his fellow man, cursing as he so charmingly puts it "the unwashed masses". Well, gee whiz, we all cant be born with a silver spoon in our mouths, but to him, they were the only people who "mattered"
That what makes this book so interesting, you get to see this monumental figure warts and all. As I said before, he is really good at describing people places and things. He is equally good at endlessly putting his foot in his mouth, he had no filter, or common sense when dealing with people.
I really enjoyed this book, and if you are a fan of General Patton, and want to know ALL the details of his life, give this book a try..
