Research At Your Fingertips

I found the book full of useful information on finding information and using Google in ways that will take me months to integrate. However, that's the beauty of books, I can keep going back until I finally get it. The author probably wrote as simple as he knew how, but for a non-techie like me it is a little "deep" at times. Besides that, I highly recommend it for anyone doing informational research.

Most useful how-to book I read last year !

All of us use Google for searching information. But the idea of using Google as an idea generation tool is fresh. I have used idea generation softwares which costed me a few hundred dollars, got old and I am not using them now. In this book the author tells us to use Google as a free idea generation tool which upgrades continuously.

The author also explained everything with screen shots. It's like someone talking to me and explaining me every step.

Like other reviews here suggest, anyone who is looking for information research will definitely find it useful. I have used it for writing comedy gags, but even for bloggers, journalists and professionals in advertising this should be useful.

A Must Read If You Do Any Kind of Google Search or Research

I had to write this review! I tried postponing and finding some excuse not to write this review. As an author myself, I have too much on my plate to waste my time writing a review. But every time I referenced this book, I felt I would be doing a lot of injustice to people seeking knowledge if I don't write this review.

Coming back to the subject matter, when reading the 'Google Storming'I realized what a lot of good an expert can do to a subject. I have been online since the advent of the web and the Google, spent half my waking life on searching or researching stuff on the Google, but I never really got around to the simple truth of how easy it is to generate ideas if you do the search in the right fashion. When the author says, Google could be used as an 'Idea Generation Software', it is not a sales pitch. Used correctly Google is the best Ideas Generation Software for free. This is an invaluable tool for content writers, authors, researchers, bloggers and creative professionals.

About the Author
Aristophanes was born, probably in Athens, c. 449 BC and died between 386 and 380 BC. Little is known about his life, but there is a portrait of him in Plato's Symposium. He was twice threatened with prosecution in the 420s for his outspoken attacks on the prominent politician Cleon, but in 405 he was publicly honored and crowned for promoting Athenian civic unity in The Frogs. Aristophanes had his first comedy produced when he was about twenty-one, and wrote forty plays in all. The eleven surviving plays of Aristophanes are published in the Penguin Classics series as The Birds and Other Plays, Lysistrata and Other Plays, and The Wasps/The Poet and the Women/The Frogs.

Menander (341-290 BC) was the most distinguished author of Greek New Comedy. An Athenian of good family, he wrote over a hundred plays, although only one survives intact today: Dyskolos or Old Cantankerous. This won the prize in 316 BC and was recovered from an Egyptian papyrus as recently as 1958. Many more fragments of his plays have since been discovered, and some sizeable pieces from The Rape of the Locks, The Arbitration and The Girl From Samos have been known since 1907. These confirm Menander’s skill in drawing humorous or romantic characters and making good dramatic use of a limited range of plots with stock scenes of disguise and recognition. Menander’s plays were revived in Athens after his death and some of them were adapted for the Roman stage by Plautus and Terence, through whom they strongly influenced light drama from the Renaissance onwards.

Titus Maccius Plautus was born in Sarsina, Umbria, in about 254 BC, and was originally named, after his father, Titus. Little is known of his life, but it is believed that he went to Rome when young and worked as a stage assistant. His potential as an actor was discovered and he acquired two other names: Maccius, derived perhaps from the name of a clown in popular farce, and Plautus, a cognomen meaning ‘flat-footed’.Somehow Plautus saved enough capital to go into business as a merchant shipper, but this venture collapsed, and he worked (says the tradition) as a miller’s laborer, and in his spare time studied Greek drama. From the age of forty onwards he achieved increasing success as an adaptor of Greek comedies for the Roman stage. Much of his work seems to be original, however, and not mere translation. He was rewarded by being granted Roman citizenship. According to Cicero he died in 184 BC.

Terence (c. 186-159 BC) was born at Carthage of Libyan parentage, and was brought to Rome as a young slave. According to Roman tradition his talents and good looks won him an education, manumission, and entry to a patrician literary circle, with whose encouragement he wrote six Latin plays, modeled on Greek New Comedy, all of which survive. Only one, The Eunuch, was a popular success in his lifetime, but he was read and admired in Roman times and throughout the Middle Ages, and became the main influence on Renaissance comedy.

Erich Segal was born in Brooklyn in 1937, and graduated from Harvard with a Bachelors degree in 1958, a Masters degree in 1959, and his Doctorate in 1964. At commencement in 1958, he became the first person in Harvard history to be selected as both Latin Salutatory Orator and Class Poet. He taught at Harvard before moving to Yale in 1964 and has since been Visiting Professor in Classics at Princeton and the University of Munich. In 1987 he retired as Adjunct Professor of Classics at Yale and is now a Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford. In addition to his most important academic book, Roman Laughter: The Comedy of Plautus (Harvard University Press, 2nd ed. rev Oxford) Professor Segal has published widely on Greek Tragedy, Latin Poetry and ancient athletics. He has delivered papers before the American Philological Association, The American Comparative Literature Association, as well as the German Italian and British Classical Societies. Over the past quarter-century, Segal's verse translations of the Roman playwright Plautus have won considerable acclaim. His latest collection: Plautus: Four Comedies has just appeared in The Oxford World's Classics series. But Erich Segal has also had a parallel, and more conspicuous, career in pop literature. This began as a schoolboy hobby. He then collaborated on the famous Harvard Hasty Pudding Club show in 1958. While pursuing his PhD and beginning his academic career, he also wrote several screenplays--the most successful being The Beatles' 1968 animated film Yellow Submarine. He spent his summers in Hollywood and his winters at Yale. But his quietly equilibrated existence was upset overnight in 1970, when his first novel was published. Love Story was an immediate sensation, ultimately selling more than twenty-one million copies in thirty-three languages. Even after twenty-five years, the book is still in print and selling well. The phrase "Love means never having to say you're sorry" has since become proverbial and is now listed in numerous books of quotations, including the canonical Bartlett's. During this time, almost everyone offered an opinion. The year it was published, President Nixon told a press conference that, although he liked the book, he objected to some of the vulgar language (this was before the Watergate tapes). Twenty years later, comedian Billy Crystal chose it as a Christmas present for President Bush. It was officially banned in the Soviet Union as "decadent" and "counter-revolutionary." A pirated edition of Love Story even appeared in China (for circulation among member of the Party). In 1987 the film was finally shown in China, where the lines stretched for several miles to see it. For his screenplay to Love Story, Mr. Segal received the 1970 Golden Globe Award as well as one of the film's seven Oscar nominations. Perhaps most importantly--at least to Mr. Segal--is that he enjoyed a conspicuously unsuccessful career as a long-distance runner and was at one time one of the world's best known mediocre athletes. He completed over forty full-length marathons, winning only one: March 17, 1963 in Washington, DC. As fate would have it, The New York Times was on strike, but the Washington Post duly recorded the historic event. Erich Segal's other bestselling novels include, The Class, Doctors, Acts of Faith, and Prizes. Segal is married and has two daughters and currently lives near Oxford, England.

The introduction to the developement of ancient comedy is really interesting, the plays themselves are naive what it does show is how far comedy has come with such modern works as Faulty Towers and Lazonby Trips the Light Fantastic. Of the plays I liked the Terrenc the best but as I said comedy has come a long way.

I. The Introductory Chapter to My Book 

There's not much that's useful in this chapter. I feel bad even calling it a 'chapter,' to be honest. If this were a meal, this section wouldn't even be an appetizer. It would be like maybe some bread that's been sitting in the back that they bring out to everyone. But not really good bread with olive oil and stuff--just like hard, stale bread that you take one bite out of and then set down and then maybe give another chance later in the meal to soak up the sauce from your linguine because you think maybe you were too harsh on the bread earlier, but you realize it's even worse than you thought because you were really hungry when you sat down and it still tasted really shitty.

I guess I'm saying I'd probably just skip it if I were you.

Looking to step your fantasy game up? JBales' insight and statistical analysis regarding fantasy sports in unrivaled. He is also humorous with his quips, which makes for easy reading. In this rendition of his fantasy sports analysis, he walks one through the myriad of ff players' concerns, what stats to be on the look out for, and how to gain an edge in your own analysis. If you do play any degree of fantasy sports, this book should definitely be a part of your library.

Can't wait to increase profits!

If I had to choose my favorite fantasy sports author it would no doubt be Jonathan Bales. Everything he puts out is great and this book is no exception. I love that he always relies on statistics as the foundation for his research so you know that the methods he recommends are successful.

My favorite part in the book is learning about how the vegas lines impact each fantasy position and learning the win probabilities for certain player correlations i.e. how often do fantasy teams with a paired QB and RB have success etc. Keep up the great work.

The insight in this book is hard to find even in the avalanche of info in the DFS world today. If your looking for that couple extra points to pass the others by in your contests this is the book to show you how. A must read!

The best programming practice book!

TL;DR: When it comes to programming practice, Elements of Programming interviews is the cream of the crop. If you are only going to buy one practice book, I would recommend this one above all the others. I have nothing but good things to say about the book, and can confidently say that no other product that offers as much depth as EoPI does.

The first thing you will notice about EoPI is that the level of detail is astounding; I was blown away by the sheer amount of effort that the authors put into it. The problem analysis is unparalleled, and goes far beyond basic algorithm/data structures knowledge. The solutions are easy to follow and explained very thoroughly. For example, if a problem has multiple solutions, the authors will walk you through each one and guide you towards the optimal solution. In addition to being a goldmine of commonly-asked problems, the book also offers many original problems that you wouldn't be able to find anywhere else; it is by far the most comprehensive practice resource out there. In terms of organization the book is extremely well structured, and even provides study plans for the reader to help with problem selection. Some of the problems in the book are much more difficult than what you would find in an actual interview. If you are able to comfortably solve the problems in this book, you should certainly have no problem with the real thing.

Before using this book I tried various other resources, particularly Cracking the Coding Interview and LeetCode. The former offered no depth whatsoever: mostly simple and overused problems (like what you would get in a technical phone screen). While the latter provided no shortage of challenging problems, I found it sometimes frustrating to use because of its unclear problem statements and its reliance on an auto-grader to compensate for lack of published solutions and guidance.

I have long been a fan of the series and I am delighted to see that a Python version has been released. I give Elements of Programming Interviews 5-stars because I think it is an essential practice resource. Honestly, it was a lot of fun to work through the book; it was much more pleasant than the usual practice problem grind. Even if you are not practicing for interviews at the time, I highly recommend checking it out. It is a great way to develop your problem solving ability and build confidence for future interviews.

Excelent and very personal lesson from Grisman

Imagine that you're in a small lesson room at your local music store. You're tuning up your mandolin waiting for your teacher to come in. The door opens and your teacher for today's lesson is David Grisman! That's the feeling I get when listening to and working with these CD's. It truely feels like you're sitting down one on one with the master and he's showing you his stuff.
Sure, it's David teaching you his own tunes, but there's more to it than that. He's also teaching you the reasons why he does what he does. He teaches harmoney leads on songs like "Dawg's Bull" but he also teaches why those harmony leads work and how to write your own.
One of my favorite sections is for the song "Minor Swing" where he discusses chord substitutions. This is just good basic jazz music theory presented in a meaningful way and applied to an actual song rather than just presented as a theory.
That brings up another point. The printed music is just the basics of the songs. When David talks about chord substitutions and so on you'll need to get out your notebook and write down what he's saying on the CD because many times it's not written in the book. But that's another reason why this feels like a private lesson. You'll have to listen, take notes, and practice to get the most out of this series, just like a real lesson.
So get out your instrument, tuner, metronome, notebook, and CD player. You're about to have about 6+ hours of intense mandolin lessons. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Fairly advanced lessons, not for beginners

I am learning mandolin after playing violin for many years; I can pick out a tune pretty easily but am not familiar with chords or mandolin technique. These CDs and the book contain a wealth of knowledge, but they are pretty advanced. There are discussions of double stops, slides, and different hand positions (first, second) within the first 10 minutes or so. Also, the previous reviewer is correct that you need to take copious notes. There are a lot of quick references to things like "third finger on the 8th fret, second finger on the third fret of the fourth string," etc., which are hard to process quickly. It would be wonderful if Dave Grisman could put together some simpler lessons! I am giving this four stars because of the wealth of knowledge contained in the CDs, but I would give it three stars for someone at my skill level, and less for rank beginners.

Unbelievable Story

A must read to understand the history of injustice and inequality to American citizens, depriving them of civil rights and due process of law. I was one of those incarcerated in the concentration camps, about which this book reveals. I have moved on, but was shocked by the book's revelation of blatant discrimination and unconscionable behavior of the keepers of the camps toward innocent Japanese Americans. I am deeply saddened to learn of the fragility of American democracy and complete disregard of the American constitution.

At my age and imperfect eyesight, I just wish the book is available in large print.

Director Myer was Honored by the Japanese-American Community

Mr. Myer, in his own book, (which is highly recommended), specifically proclaims, explains, and proves that the 10 relocation camps under his responsibility were NOT "concentration," so the whole premise of the book is false and betrays the foregone conclusion of the author's agenda.

Quite the opposite, Mr. Myer, the former War Relocation Authority director, was presented with awards and dinners in his honor, after WWII, by the Japanese-American community, in APPRECIATION for his handling of the West Coast Defense Zone evacuees.

For those who want to research the true story (and not today's politically-correct agenda version of falsifying history), get the actual GPO (Government Printing Office) final reports of the WRA from 1946.
