Marching Powder: A True Story of Friendship, Cocaine, and South America's Strangest Jail, by Thomas McFadden, Rusty Young

Rusty Young was backpacking in South America when he heard about Thomas McFadden, a convicted English drug trafficker who ran tours inside Bolivia's notorious San Pedro prison. Intrigued, the young Australian journalisted went to La Paz and joined one of Thomas's illegal tours. They formed an instant friendship and then became partners in an attempt to record Thomas's experiences in the jail. Rusty bribed the guards to allow him to stay and for the next three months he lived inside the prison, sharing a cell with Thomas and recording one of the strangest and most compelling prison stories of all time. The result is Marching Powder.

This book establishes that San Pedro is not your average prison. Inmates are expected to buy their cells from real estate agents. Others run shops and restaurants. Women and children live with imprisoned family members. It is a place where corrupt politicians and drug lords live in luxury apartments, while the poorest prisoners are subjected to squalor and deprivation. Violence is a constant threat, and sections of San Pedro that echo with the sound of children by day house some of Bolivia's busiest cocaine laboratories by night. In San Pedro, cocaine--"Bolivian marching powder"--makes life bearable. Even the prison cat is addicted.

Yet Marching Powder is also the tale of friendship, a place where horror is countered by humor and cruelty and compassion can inhabit the same cell. This is cutting-edge travel-writing and a fascinating account of infiltration into the South American drug culture.

From Publishers Weekly
This memoir of a British drug dealer's nearly five years inside a Bolivian prison provides a unique window on a bizarre and corrupt world. McFadden, a young black man from Liverpool arrested for smuggling cocaine, finds himself forced to pay for his accommodations in La Paz's San Pedro Prison, the first of many oddities in a place where some inmates keep pets and rich criminals can sustain a lavish lifestyle. The charismatic McFadden soon learns how to survive, and even thrive, in an atmosphere where crooked prison officials turn up at his private cell to snort lines of coke. By chance, he stumbles on an additional source of income when he begins giving tours of the prison to foreign tourists, a trade that leads to the mention in a Lonely Planet guidebook that attracts the attention of his coauthor, Young, who was backpacking in South America at the time. McFadden's unapologetic self-serving story will attract little pity as he freely admits to countless cocaine sales for which he was never held accountable. Once the authors chronicle the novel aspects of life in San Pedro, from which McFadden was released in 2000, the narrative loses momentum. The book would have benefited from some judicious editing and some objective perspective on the veracity of McFadden's story.

From Booklist
On a whim, Young decided it might be interesting to visit notorious San Pedro Prison in La Paz, Bolivia, so he signed up for an illegal tour. The tour guide was Thomas McFadden, an inmate who had been imprisoned for drug smuggling. They struck up a friendship, and Young bribed the guards to let him stay "inside" for three months, where he recorded the particulars of life in one of the world's most peculiar prisons. San Pedro is like a city: inmates must "buy" their cells from real estate agents, drug lords live in the high style to which they are accustomed, and the destitute, as always, live a hand-to-mouth existence. Like most cities, San Pedro is a lively if decidedly cutthroat place, and Young, who teaches English in Colombia, writes about it as if he were Joseph Mitchell prowling Greenwich Village. The book is filled with characters ranging from outrageous to inspiring, and Young layers on the texture--sights, sounds, smells--until we feel as though we have visited the place. Travel literature of a very special and captivating kind. David Pitt

Good book, intersting, makes you think...
By Nog
Very easy and interesting read. Make you really wonder how this jail system works. Makes you want to visit Bolivia and see the country for yourself, to understand it from your own perspective as well. It is not entirely clear if every little detail is attached to reality but the general story seems to be candid and is very intersting. I would highly recommend.

Entailing and astonishing story
By Giuseppe
I heard about this book from some fellow travelers while in South America who were visitors to this prison. I am definitely glad I picked this book up, for it was an amazing story of an English drug trafficker getting locked up in the world's most mind boggling prison, at least that I know of. Once you read this book you'll be telling all of your friends about the crazy things that go on in this prison, and if you're a traveler you'll definitely put it on your list of things to see.

so I feel like this book had the potential to be great
By The Road Not Taken
Okay, so I feel like this book had the potential to be great. The premise was intriguing and one that hasn't been overdone already. Also the author's writing style was fairly easy on the reader. There weren't too many grammatical errors, and I don't recall being hindered by sentence structure or anything like that. Unfortunately, some of the issues that I had were with the main characters and certain major plot points and continuity issues, which detracted from the story overall for me.

***CAUTION - SPOILERS AHEAD***

One of the first things I noticed that threw me off was a continuity issue. Charlotte becomes friends with her roommate, Iris, and says that over the next few weeks they spend their time together. But then a few paragraphs later she says they've been on campus for 1 week...? I noticed things like this several times, and I had to go back and check to make sure I had read it correctly. Another similar discontinuity I saw in a few places was that either Charlotte or Dominic would reveal his/her feelings to the other, and then a while later the same character would say pretty much the same thing again and the other character would act surprised as if they hadn't heard it before.

Another major point for me was Charlotte's reasoning for not telling anyone about her past. It didn't seem believable to me, especially with regard to Dominic. I can kind of understand that she hadn't had any girlfriends before and that she saw Iris as innocent and didn't want her to have a bad opinion of her. But with Dominic, I feel like he was so similar to her, it just didn't make any sense for her to believe he would hold it against her. The reasoning given just wasn't strong enough for me to be able to get inside her head and share her fear. On a similar note, Charlotte holds Dominic's past with women against him, which doesn't make sense given that she has the same past with men. On further thought, maybe she was projecting her double standards onto him and that's why she was afraid he would judge her - because she was judging him...?

The third thing that gave me pause was the pushy behavior displayed by Dominic and Iris at various points throughout the book, as well as Charlotte's lack of a backbone. An example is when Dominic wants Charlotte to come to his band's gig, but she says no. So he tells Iris about the gig, and Iris guilt trips Charlotte into going. Then they get to the gig and he wants Charlotte to go to a party afterward, and when she says no again, he smirks and tells her he'll just tell Iris. To me, this feels manipulative, and I don't find it attractive. But what floored me even more and made me want to yell at Charlotte is the fact that she just kept giving in without a fight and without calling him on his behavior. I'm the kind of person who would not be happy if someone refused to accept my "no" and manipulated me into doing something. So I'm not sure if I was angrier at Dominic for appealing to Iris for help, at Iris for guilt tripping Charlotte into going to the gig and then the party, or at Charlotte for being such a pushover and knowingly allowing them both to overrule her decision.

Along the same lines, the last straw for me was at the end of the book, when the characters should have made some kind of progress, Dominic tries to make Charlotte jealous by allowing various girls to hang all over him. Obviously, this behavior irked me, but I would have been okay if it had been used as a moment of growth and Charlotte had shown him that his behavior would get him nowhere. Maybe if she had confronted him or ignored him or pretended to move on, or something to make him panic and realize he was being a jerk. But instead, she reinforces his behavior by 'realizing how much he means to her' and kissing him, which is exactly what he was aiming for.

As a reader, I want to feel like I'm on the same side as the main character. If I'm angry, I'd like to be angry with the main character at some other character. While reading this book, I found myself angry at the main character herself too often and it caused me frustration and kept me from getting into the book.

College+Rockstar = great read!
By Leeanne H.
An amazing read, I loved it! Charlie has been wild all through high school and it takes waking up in bed with a wicked hangover and two guys whose name she can’t remember before she decides to make a change. She’s going away to college – a perfect place to become a “new her.” She changes her name to Charlotte, begins dressing more conservatively and vows not to drink or have anymore one night stands. This works great for her for a bit – until she meets Dominic. Dominic Hudson is lead guitarist for the band Supercharged and he has his eye on Charlotte. The chemistry between these two is intense from their very first meeting but Charlotte is doing her best to resist.

I really enjoyed the mix of “college romance” and “rockstar romance” I enjoy reading both and putting the two together really turned out fantastic. I love that this story also isn’t all about Charlie, we also get a bit of her roommates story and I hope we get to read more about her in the future! This is a fantastic read and I highly recommend it!

Potential
By Cranky - The Book Curmudgeon
Eighteen year old Charlie promised her grandfather she would change her ways. She’s that girl, the one they all talk about because she likes to have a good time.
After her latest wicked hangover and no memory of what she did the night before, Charlie leaves for college and reinvents herself as Charlotte, the good girl. She vows: no more wild parties, no more one-night stands, and no more drinking.
Things go according to plan. She has a great roommate that quickly becomes her BFF, gets a job at the school library, and then catches the eye of the bad boy lead guitarist of the hottest band on campus, Dominic Hudson.
Charlotte tries to resist. She’s the good girl now; she’s no longer Charlie. But Dominic makes it difficult and Charlie lurks just underneath Charlotte’s surface.
I really liked the concept of this story and the interactions between Dominic and Charlotte. There was more to him than his reputation, just as there was more to her and her past.
For a debut novel, the author did a good job. It was a quick and easy read with a couple of surprises. I really enjoyed the interaction between Charlotte and her roommate, Iris, even though, at times, I wasn’t sure if I were reading a story about Charlotte or Iris.
I did feel the interaction with the band was missing. Dominic is the lead guitarist of a popular band, but we don’t know much about his band mates. I would have liked to seen this further developed.
Dominic was a lot more open than Charlotte was, which made a nice change from the usual taciturn male lead characters.
My main issue with this story and the reason this work does not rate higher is:
1) There were a few parts that were confusing because of the timeline. I had to go back and re-read some parts just to be clear on what was happening.
2) At times, the author repeated herself. I would have liked to see this space utilized to advance and progress the story, rather than returning to ground that had already been covered.
3) There were some plot holes and consistency issues, which didn’t get cleared up or addressed a lot later on in the story.
4) I struggled with some of the factual accuracies around location in this work. I know the area where this story is situated well. Some of the descriptions are inaccurate.
I’d like to finish off by saying, however, that this book has a lot of potential and if some of the above were altered, my rating would have been higher. It doesn’t end in a cliffhanger, but there is more to their story, which will be further explored in another soon to be released book.

The Globalisation of Modern Architecture: The Impact of Politics, Economics and Social Change on Architecture and Urban Design Since 1990

Taking the break-up of the Soviet Union and the entry of Russia, China and India into the global market as the start of a new era of globalisation, Robert Adam compares new developments in architecture and urban design with major shifts in the balance of power since 1990. Based on the principle that design unavoidably follows social change, politics and economics, this analysis casts a new light on recent architecture. Starting with the lead up to events in the 1990s, links are established between the global dominance of the North Atlantic economies, architectural style and a dramatic increase in international architectural practice. The widely-observed homogeneity of the global consumer economy is examined in relation to branding, tourism and international competition between cities, and parallels are drawn with universal architectural and urban types, iconic architecture and the rise of the star architect. Contrasting pressures to maintain differences are identified in the break-up of nation states, identity politics, targeted marketing and environmentalism, and these are related to attempts to reinforce local identity through architecture and urban design. Using social, political and economic change as a guide to new directions in architecture and urban design, the book ends by tracing the changes in global power revealed by the 2008 Western financial crash and its immediate impact on the built environment. By comparing past patterns of cultural influence, the book speculates on how architecture and urban design may come to reflect wider global trends.

Review
In this stimulating book, Robert Adam demonstrates how a global economy has brought forth a global architecture, in the form of commercialised modernism and the demand for iconic new buildings. Professor Adam interweaves the demands of the global economy with the development of the global architectural language, while chronicling the continuing resistance to both. The book ends with a question: how far will either the globalisation that occurred before 2007 or the associated dominance of North Atlantic architectural styles survive the crisis? --Martin Wolf, Chief Economics Commentator, Financial Times

Robert Adam is that rarity, an architect who can think across the political and social landscape to find unexpected forces that shape the style and meaning of architecture. Taking us on a guided race through the isms and starchitects who have dominated the scene for ten years, he shows that globalisation is nothing new, but is still the strongest force that erodes cultural identity and results in the Janus-Façade of the iconic building. Adam s commentary is, as always, welcome, trenchant, wide-ranging and informed. --Charles Jencks, Author of Modern Movements in Architecture and Iconic Building: The Power of Enigma

Alongside its historical sweep and sociological understanding, this book offers a critique of the global cult of the star architect and identifies a reflexively modernist architecture. Adam discusses an architecture for the post-2008 economic condition that is no longer self-obsessed but creates space through an intensive communication with the on-the-ground social and natural world. --Dr Scott Lash, Professor of Sociology and Director of the Centre for Cultural Studies, Goldsmiths College, University of London

About the Author
Robert Adam was born in England in 1948 and received his architectural education at Westminster University. He was a Rome Scholar in 1972-3 and in 1977 became a director of the architectural and urban design practice now known as Adam Architecture. Adam is a visiting professor in urban design at Strathclyde University. He has published numerous papers and articles on architecture, urban design, heritage policy, design philosophy and history together with television and radio broadcasts and lecture tours in Europe, Asia and the Americas. He has sat on English government design review bodies, and was an elected councillor and honorary secretary of the Royal Institute of British Architects. As well as contributing to several books, Adam co-edited Tradition Today and was the author of Classical Architecture, a complete handbook; Buildings by Design and The Seven Sins of Architects.

Few architects have the ability to discuss architecture's relevance amidst politics and the global economy in a coherent narrative, but Robert Adam triumphs. The book is a wonderful and accurate commentary of how and why economics and politics over the past 20 years have shaped the globalization of modern architecture in major cities and what the future could bring.

To Adam, the past 20 years of global architectural development is a product of the homogeneity influenced by the business community from Europe and moreover, North America. The desire for world economic unification under the West has stripped away local design traditions and cultural identity so business can be done in the same context everywhere. As emerging economies replicate the same unsustainable standards of living patterns as the US, their cities are becoming mundane replicas of the West in order to market themselves as global symbols of commerce and power.

The book states that the diminished diversity in cities disregards local identity in the push for transformation into transnational metropolises marketed as a new symbol to anyone and everyone. The push for the "supranational state" is reminiscent of the concept articulated in Hardt's and Negri's book "Empire", where the needs of the global elite are setting the tone for the liberalization of local emerging economies for global investment and at their detriment, so business can be the same everywhere and favoring the West. The homogenous global architecture is controlled by the same economic forces outside of the architectural industry. A luxury hotel or office building function and look the same no matter where you are. Adam discusses how globalization is driving out the uniqueness and character of cities and reducing it to the same set of monotonous building types. At the same time, he offers hope on how the use of globalization can reverse this trend.

This is not just an architectural issue, but a continual issue in all cultural pursuits from music, art and fashion. Cultural diversity helps us remember and respect local rituals and sensibilities that help us identity with a place, even if they are not necessarily our own. Adam suggests that localization of global architecture is the emerging step, and the embracing cultural diversity will inspire better building design.

An Introduction to International Relations and Religion, by Jeffrey Haynes

Not so very long ago it seemed reasonable to assert that the influence of religion on global politics was on the wane. As the Western world became increasingly secular and the process of globalisation deepened, it seemed inevitable - on the surface at least - that the voice of religion was to be heard softly if it was to be heard at all.

This has now changed, and changed perhaps irrevocably. As Jeff Haynes argues in this thought-provoking and important new book, various religious 'actors' are now significantly involved in international relations and have become a crucial influence on policy in a post-Westphalian world. International Relations and Religion guides the reader through the complex issues at the heart of this topic with clarity and insight.

This updated second edition starts with a close reading of the many theoretical and analytical concepts - notably Huntington and the clash of civilisations - that have grown up around this area and then concludes with a summary of the issues under discussion and attempts to put into context what it means to live in a world that is increasingly shaped by a whole host of diverse religious groups.

Essential reading for students of International Relations and Politics.

New Essays on Uncle Tom's Cabin (The American Novel)From Brand: Cambridge University Press

Increased interest in the role of women and minorities in establishing the canon of American literature has led to renewed interest in Uncle Tom's Cabin. The essays in this volume set out to provide contemporary readers with a critical and historical interpretation of the novel that reflects the best of recent scholarship. In his introduction Eric J. Sundquist attempts to show that Uncle Tom's Cabin boldly takes issue with both proslavery arguments and prevailing prejudices among abolitionists, employing the forms of popular melodrama and heated rhetoric to carry its complex argument. The individual essays examine the influence of Stowe's novel on the characterization of women in the American novel and on later women writers, the role of women in the antislavery movement, the literary exchanges between Stowe and her contemporaries; Uncle Tom's Cabin and the tradition of the Gothic novel, and the characterizations of blacks in this novel and in later works.

A great work on a Greater Work
By Tony Thomas
This collection was really important to me during my graduate work on African American literature in the pre-Civil War period.

The essays are written by scholars who are experts in various aspects of Black and pre-Civil War literature as well as history. They delineate a lot about the Uncle Tom and its place in the literary and political discourse that it unleashed. This book and others of its series are extremely useful for students and professors because they gather together the best articles written in the scholarly journals by key authorities on texts. They should be used more often as textbooks in courses together with the text they are written about.

Bloodline (Star Wars), by Claudia Gray

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the author of Star Wars: Lost Stars comes a thrilling novel set in the years before the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

“Unmissable . . . Bloodline’s tense politics, vivid new characters, and perfectly characterized Leia make it feel as central to the Star Wars universe as one of the films.”—Tor.com

WITNESS THE BIRTH OF THE RESISTANCE

When the Rebellion defeated the Empire in the skies above Endor, Leia Organa believed it was the beginning to a lasting peace. But after decades of vicious infighting and partisan gridlock in the New Republic Senate, that hope seems like a distant memory.

Now a respected senator, Leia must grapple with the dangers that threaten to cripple the fledgling democracy—from both within and without. Underworld kingpins, treacherous politicians, and Imperial loyalists are sowing chaos in the galaxy. Desperate to take action, senators are calling for the election of a First Senator. It is their hope that this influential post will bring strong leadership to a divided galaxy.

As the daughter of Darth Vader, Leia faces with distrust the prospect of any one person holding such a powerful position—even when supporters suggest Leia herself for the job. But a new enemy may make this path Leia’s only option. For at the edges of the galaxy, a mysterious threat is growing. . . .

Praise for Bloodline

“[Claudia] Gray paints a much more complete galaxy than we often get to see on the big screen. . . . Knowing that Rian Johnson (writer, director of Star Wars: Episode VIII) had some creative input on the novel provides hope that we haven’t seen the last of all of these wonderful characters. . . . Star Wars: Bloodline isn’t just a great Star Wars book, or a great Leia book, or a great book; it’s a great introduction into the larger world of Star Wars in general.”—ComicBook.com

“Bloodline is a nonstop page-turner that grabs at heartstrings that you weren’t aware of and yanks down on every one of them. The story is loaded with context for The Force Awakens that plants the seeds for The First Order in perfectly haunting ways, and leaves the reader grasping for more details on newly discovered favorite characters.”—Inverse

The Best of the Star Wars Canon So Far
By StoryHobbit
No spoilers:

I’ll be honest, ever since Lucasfilm decided to set a “new precedent” for their Star Wars literature, relabeling the old as Legends and introducing the new as official canon, I haven’t been a huge fan of the books that have followed. Sure, some of them were okay, my favorites being A New Dawn, Aftermath, and Lost Stars. But I’ve waffled on which I liked more. While they were good, none of them really stood out as being my clear favorite. Well that is no longer the case.

Bloodline is now, by far, my favorite Star Wars book in the canon, ranking as high as some of my absolute favorite books from the old Expanded Universe, now Legends. And that’s saying a lot. While I won’t dive into spoilers in this review, here are some of my thoughts to get started with.

First of all, let’s talk politics, because the book certainly does . The Force Awakens had almost nothing to tell us about the political landscape of the universe, even less than we saw in the original trilogy. At least then we knew there was an Empire, an Emperor, a Senate that had been recently dissolved, etc. Bloodline takes place 6 years before The Force Awakens and it will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the state of the galaxy prior to the events of the film. Now, the funny thing about politics is that it’s become almost something of a dirty word among some Star Wars fans, due largely to the backlash of the politically-charged prequel films. Fortunately, one of the best mediums to present politics is in book form; we can get inside the heads of the characters, and suddenly it becomes a game we can participate in. Bloodline does this to perfection, and I might add that students of early United States politics might find some of the political arguments familiar.

But let’s move away from that and talk about characters. Princess Leia is the primary protagonist of the book, and Gray hit the nail right on the head. Everything about Leia, from her political views, to her pessimistic and impatient demeanor, to her relationships with other characters, represents realistic growth for her character from when we saw her in Return of the Jedi. Other characters, though not given the same spotlight as Leia, are quite interesting. Gray is able to present likable characters despite completely different viewpoints. Gray’s last Star Wars book, Lost Stars, did something similar by having the two main characters take opposite sides of the war between the Rebellion and the Empire. Both were likable, relatable, but still had completely opposing views. Perhaps the most likable character in Bloodline, besides Leia herself, was a senator who existed on the opposite side of the political spectrum from the princess.

Lastly, if you’re a chronology fan like myself, you will find this book fascinating. The book is full of clues and events that will inform your viewing of The Force Awakens. Since these events are considered canon, we can rely on their accuracy. I won’t spoil anything here, but I promise that this book will change the dialogue that fans have about The Force Awakens, in a big way. It answers questions.

Bloodline is literary gold even outside of the Star Wars universe. It’s one of the best science fiction books I have read. Bloodline makes you think, it makes you cry, it makes you want to jump up and down in fanboy/girl glee. The only thing it won’t do is make you stop reading. So the remaining question is: why are you still reading this review and not reading Bloodline?

The "new canon" finally finds substance...
By Joseph Born
The nebulous political landscape of Episode VII is finally detailed in Gray's second Star Wars novel, Bloodline. We learn more about the New Republic's politics, the failings of the Senate which was only briefly mentioned in the Force Awakens novelization, and we finally get to see how Leia's character in the "new canon" differs from her Legends counterpart.

Claudia Gray's first young adult SW novel, Lost Stars, was a surprise hit. Fans were ravenous for more and she delivers with Bloodline. While this book is very heavy with the politics, Gray manages to make it interesting with her deft writing and handling of them rather than tedious. There's plenty of action and humorous moments as well, Bloodline feels like a Star Wars adventure.

I felt Leia was criminally underused in Episode VII, however I was unsure if she could be a strong character in her own solo novel. I was mistaken, the tight character focus on Leia was excellent. Gray weaves together some other multidimensional supporting characters but this book is all about Leia. She's jaded, having lost faith in the New Republic and we see her struggling to find her place in the galaxy. Her relationship with Han and Ben is lightly explorered, but best of all we see Leia as she was in the original trilogy. In action, taking charge, journeying around the Galaxy. Leia is struggling with her heritage, both as Vader's daughter and princess of the destroyed Alderaan... struggling to reconcile these roles.

I'd highly recommend reading Bloodline, especially if you plan on seeing Episode VIII. No doubt some elements will play into the film as the director, Rian Johnson, contributed to the novel.

No Lost Stars
By E. William Nichols
I had pretty high expectations for this book after reading Claudia Grey's last Star Wars book Lost Stars (which was great). I have to say I was dissapointed. It was good but lacked. Idk it may be my imaginary but It was hard for me to picture what she was describing at times. She definitely took too much time describing outfits. However I would still recommend it. But if you expected it to set up a lot of the first order and resistance then you will be dissapointed too.

AN ALMOST PERFECT TRANSFORMERS REFERENCE
By Tim Janson
More than years after they took America by storm, the Transformers Toy line seems to be stronger than ever, bolstered by a big-budget Hollywood movie, and toys that just keep coming. What better time for a brand new Transformers price and, far more importantly, an identification guide. The Transformers Identification and Price Guide comes from Krause Publications, a renowned leader in collectibles books.

Thankfully the author, Mark Bellomo doesn't skip over the very rich history of the Transformers BEFORE they made it to American soil. His introduction covers Takara's Diaclone and Microman lines and Hasbro's eventual purchase of the license to that line, and the backstory that was created by Marvel Comics. The guide runs in chronological order, beginning with series 1 in 1984. Each Transformer is show in both vehicle/robot mode in very crisp photography. The book reprints all of the information off the toy's original techspecs including name, function, motto, biography, and techspec ability ratings. Next is a paragraph or two about each figure that gives facts about the toy and the character, and various minutiae about things like joint and sticker wear, collectibility, etc., The book also lists each accessory that comes with the figure which is one of the most important aspects of the book. Finally, three prices are given for each toy: Loose and complete, Mint in box, and mint in sealed box/Mint on Card. Kudos for that although a price for loose figures without accessories would have been welcomed.

In addition to the pictures of the toy in its various forms, all of the figures accessories are also pictured. I cannot stress how important picturing the accessories is. While I am fairly knowledgeable about Transformers, I cannot just look at most accessories and tell you whom they belong to. Often coming across odd lots of weapons at garage sales and flea markets, the book is invaluable in matching the part to the figure.

Credit again to Bellomo for also explaining long and complicated history behind Jetfire as well as giving the famous Jet two full pages of coverage including photos in robot mode, jet mode, jet mode without armor, and Gerwalk mode, as well as a picture of the figure mint in the box and even close-ups of wing variations. The mail-away figures such as the Omnibots, Powerdashers, Reflector, etc., are also covered. Each of the various Gestalts (Devastator, Superion, etc,) are also pictured, as is one of my favorite Transformers, Sixshot, in all six of his modes.

The book is 254 pages long and doesn't waste an inch of space. It's well written and well researched with gorgeous photography throughout the book. Is it perfect? Well, not quite...I honestly think the prices for MISB/MISP figures is a bit low, based on what I've seen these toys go for at places such as eBay. Also, I would have loved to see Generation Two toys included. The G2 line is regularly overlooked which is unfortunate since there were some very nice toys included in the line. Finally, I would have loved to have seen some coverage of the Japanese variants such as Twincast and Soundblaster, but ok, I guess that might be wising for a bit too much.

There haven't been many books put out about the Transformers toy line but this one is easily the best and most detailed. Indispensable for Transformers collectors!

An excellent G1 figure resource
By J. Ward
This book is fantastic! It features all of the US released Generation One Transformers up to the Action Masters line (includes Headnasters, Targetmasters, Micromasters, and Pretenders). Each figure has the original tech spec bio, a description of the figure, photos of the figure in each mode, as well as pictures of all their accessories. This book is like the pin-up book for Transformers geeks like myself.

The book is a great resource for USA released G1 figures. I wish it included Japanese releases too, but I can appreciate the in-depth focus of this book for what it is.

Some of the photos are out of focus in some spots, and the book is limited to USA G1 figures, but despite the flaws this is still a 5 star book. I was not disapointed. I love this book!

The Best TF guide out there...
By B. Frantz 2.0
This is the best Action Figure guide I have ever seen. It is very informative and very accurate, the author even adds his personal take on most of the figures. And talk about bringing back old memories. I actually bought this book for nostalgic purposes and was very pleased. It was nice seeing all the old Transformers from the 80's in one piece. Makes me wish I knew what happened to all my old ones, man I'd be rich if I would have taken better care of them. Hope Mark Bellomo does a guide book for the rest of the Transformers. If you are looking for the ultimate 80's Transformers Action Figure guide, this is it!
