Very Disappointing

I was so disappointed by this book. Barna spends lots of time pointing out errors in modern Christianity, but very little on what to do about it. I didn't find anything in the book that would help me "think like Jesus" more or make "the right decision everytime." The book seems to be geared more for new Christians rather than those of us who've been believers for awhile. And newer Christians wouldn't get any closer to thinking like Jesus by reading this book, though they might gain some useful knowledge.

I wish I had read some of the reviews before buying it. I'm glad I bought it used.

Barna does a great job with surveying and analyzing what is going on with modern Christianity. I think he should stick to what he knows best.

The crisis of the Christian mind

Here Barna makes the case that Christians, particularly evangelicals, do not live like we should because we do not THINK like we should -- i.e., like Christ. He says that we spend an hour a week in church learning a few verses and then spend the rest of the week letting the world tell us what and how to think.

I believe he is pretty much spot on. Why, then, only three stars? Barna makes a great case for having a Christian worldview, and his concluding material on what it looks like to have one and how to build one in a congregation is great, but the major part of the book is his analysis of the seven great worldview questions, and his treatment of them was not that good. Not bad, but not that good.

The first three and last three chapters are worth the purchase price of the book, but for a better look at worldviews and the Christian worldview, I recommend (as does the author) the work of James Sire and Harry Blamires.

Great Tool for the Christian Walk

George Barna has put together a book that will get every believer thinking, if they would take the time to read it. Of course, when you read it, you should have your Bible right there beside you.

I had never before thought in terms of a world view and a biblical world view. Makes perfect sense to me! Developing a perspective on what I see and hear while living in the world makes more sense to me when viewed through the lens of the Bible. I do not see at all, as has been suggested, that Mr. Barna is telling readers how to think. He is suggesting tools we can use in our daily walk as we make decisions on every level. The tools he suggests are supported in the Bible, but again, they are only tools and we choose when and how to use them. It takes practice and perseverance.

Christians were originally known as "Followers of the Way." We cannot follow if we cannot see the road signs and these tools provide the sight needed. Again, this is a good read but needs to be read and understood in relationship to the Bible.

brief terrorism dictionary

"Dictionary of Terrorism" by David Wright-Neville (Apr. 2010), 221 pgs. Well, it's okay for general reference; if you want to want to learn a FEW MORE details than what is reported in your local newspaper. But, NOT a WHOLE lot of info - about only 200 words on any topic/terrorist group. As far as "terrorism" goes, it seems a bit farfetched for the author to toss in "John Wilkes Booth" as a terrorist for assassinating U.S. Pres. Abraham Lincoln (1865), but fails to list the Muslim prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for originating the fundamentals for Islamo fascism (see: "The Truth About Muhammad" by R. Spencer). The author noted that after shooting Lincoln, pro-Confederate Booth yelled "Sic simper tyrannis! (`Thus always to tyrants!') and noted that the phrase had been originated by the assassins of Julius Caesar, but the author apparently did not know/reveal that the motto was also on the state flag of nearby Confederate Virginia. Actually, I liked "Dictionary of Terrorism" by J.R. Thackrah better, it had more detailed info - but it being a 2004 publication has made it a bit stale-dated. Although a little pricer, I'd suggest instead: "Historical Dictionary of Terrorism" (3rd ed.: Aug. 2009) by S. Anderson with almost 4 times the number of pages: 880.

If you are an architect or engineer, buy (and read) this book

We architects (and engineers) believe we are special; so unique that the laws of business (and nature?) don't apply to us. Ray Kogan and Cara Bobcheck beautifully disabuse us of that notion, at the same time providing the best handbook I have ever read (and I've read dozens) on how set up and complete the process of planning for business success in the design world. Isn't it ironic that we are expert planners for hire, and yet with rare exception do little to no rational and rigorous planning for the success of our own practice?

The information is well organized, to the point, and at the same time infused at appropriate intervals with enough humor and insight into the personalities of design professionals and what motivates us to make it both useful and fun to read.

If you are considering embarking on the process of developing a legitimate strategic plan, READ THIS BOOK!

Excellent resource for A/E firms

I own a 10 person civil engineering firm and I recently decided it was time to create a strategic plan to chart our path to growth and profitability. I didn't have much to go by, but couldn't resist this book because it's industry specific. Now that I've read it, I can say that it is an excellent resource. Soon I will begin to prepare our strategic plan as outlined in this book - and I'm excited to get started! With confidence I recommend this book to anyone in the A/E industry that is interested in creating or refining a strategic plan!

I don't know what it is about these Duncan Baird hardcover titles. Whether it's the visual appeal of the litany of two-to-four-page spreads, the flood of color and texture, or the deliberate crispness of the sidebars, all contribute to the tessitura of a truly unique library of works. The current opus is a strong introduction to the underpinnings, trappings, and implications of Buddhism, beginning with its history and motivational background and carefully working through all the historical and, ultimately, modern instantiations of this unique way of life and thought. Not that they pertain to Buddhism at all, scholars, do yourselves a favor and check out the Duncan Baird hardcover editions "China: Empire and Civilization" by Shaughnessy and "Jesus Christ: The Jesus of History, the Christ of Faith" and "The Lost Bible" by Porter. They are a treasure to have, to hold, to thumb threw, to admire, to lose oneself in, let alone to devour and learn from.

I really enjoyed reading this book! The book is comprehensive, yet written clearly and understandably. The book gives you the history of the religion and originating countries. Well-written and enjoyable!
