Tell us a little bit about your book – who is it aimed at and how will it help them?
MRI in Practice has been an essential book for technologists, radiographers and radiologists wishing to learn about MRI for nearly 20 years and is now a market leader. It covers fundamental topics that anyone practicing MRI needs to understand to get the most out of the MR system and interpret images correctly. In addition it has helped technologists in the USA prepare for the MRI registry examination.

What differentiates your book from others in the field?
It is written by clinical people for other clinicians and as such is geared very much towards the application of theory into practice. Specifically the authors are technologists/radiographers and therefore rather than present material in a highly technical or mathematical fashion, which is common of other books of this genre, we approach the theoretical concepts from the point of view of how technologists or radiographers make appropriate selections at the MR console or how radiologists interpret images correctly. We also use analogies to help the reader understand complicated theory by relating it to something a lot simpler. Finally the use of clear simple diagrams also assists the reader to understand difficult concepts.

What do you feel are the reasons for the success of MRI in Practice over the years?
The main reason I think is that it is written for clinicians by clinicians who can therefore speak the same language as the reader. The application of theory to practice is at the forefront of our approach. For the most part clinicians involved in MRI are not physicists and so unless they can see how the theory relates to what they actually do in practice, it is difficult to make sense of it all. The key is that the book uses simple language, analogies and clear diagrams that are always related to practice. This has a special resonance for MRI clinicians (excuse the pun!). The book is also considered essential reading for preparation for the MR registry examination in the USA and, as so many undertake this examination and have found using the book has really helped them pass, this has undoubtedly increased the books popularity. Another reason for the books success is that it is used as course material on the MRI in Practice course that is taught by myself and co –author John Talbot to hundreds of people annually in 14 different countries around the world. The popularity of this course and its synergy with the book has meant that it is used all over the world and has been translated into other languages.

What made you think that a companion website was appropriate for this edition?
I thought it was time to look at a digital element to the book as this seems to be the trend in publishing at the moment. I didn’t want to totally digitize the book at this stage but felt that a companion web site was a good starting point. On the MRI in Practice course John Talbot and I use some very sophisticated 3D animations in our presentations. Some of these have been used in the companion web site specifically where an animation rather than a static image in the book really helps understanding. We know from feedback from delegates that attend the MRI in Practice course that these animations make all the difference so this is a good opportunity to help readers of the book as well.

What is your day job?
Senior University Lecturer and International Lecturer in MRI.

What other field would you work in if not MRI?
I have always wanted to be an airline pilot and actually acquired my license when I was 17 (a very long time ago!). Its too late to pursue that now but if I could live my life all over again I think I would have tried harder to achieve this ambition! Perhaps there are some similarities between flying a plane and flying an MR scanner – who knows!

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I travel a lot and I also enjoy reading and hanging out with my family.

And finally, what’s next for you?
Together with John Talbot, I am currently developing i-phone and Android apps of the lectures we give on the MRI in Practice course. We hope to make these available later in 2011. These will further compliment the new edition of MRI in Practice and the MRI in Practice course. After that, then I guess the next project is the new edition of Handbook of MRI Technique.

Excellent MRI book for beginners

I have a PhD specializing in MRI. I would say this is a great book at the beginner to maybe intermediate level. Should be enough for a Masters' degree. Its a great first step to understanding intricate complicated MR Physics. A lot of complex stuff is simplified here. Many advanced books explain even basic simple concepts using huge equations which can be intimidating for a lot of people - certainly was for me. This books does the exact opposite. It introduces you in a friendly way and keeps you engaged.
I highly recommend this book. Also its at a very economic price.

Cons: Has some minor typos, has some answers wrong - but you will figure it out easily.

This book was amazing. I passed my Registry and I used this book as part of my study material. I read the book, chapter by chapter, front to back, probably 10 times. This is a must have for anyone getting into MRI or studying for their Registry.

A Good Beginner's Guide to Buying a Home!

I've bought and sold 4 homes in my lifetime and looking at real estate and knowing the market is a hobby of mine. I have re-financed homes several times also, and I know how the home-buying & selling game is played. This book doesn't tell me much I don't already know, but I feel confident in the home buying field. For a new first-time buyer, I believe this book would be helpful.

Most of the just of this book is telling you what a really good real estate agent should explain to you during your search for a home, and what the realtor doesn't tell you, your mortgage broker might fill in the gaps. But as Home Buying Kit for Dummies mentions, the realtor and mortgage people do not make a dime until they close a sale or sell a mortgage. While some real estate agents have morals and will not convince you to buy the first thing you see, many do not seem to listen when you tell them what you want in a home. That's one reason why I started finding my own real estate to buy. I don't have time to drive around with a realtor who is showing me house after house that is exactly NOT what I want. So I find my own listings, on real estate listings. I drive by the home and only if I decide I like the place and do some research, do I call the listing agent. I've also sold real estate on my own, without a realtor, and it's not that hard, as long as you use a reputable title company.

So this book really isn't for someone with my experience. But for a newbie to the real estate buying game - I recommend soaking up all the knowledge you can, before you start looking for a home. Get prequalified for a mortgage so you have the ability to make an offer when you find the right price. Make a list of things you absolutely must have in your home, and things you'd like to have, but are negotiable. Try and decide on a neighborhood or area you'd like to live in, and make sure, when you do find the house - to drive by that property several times - at different times and days of the week, because sometimes a quiet place during the day turns into party town at night. The worst feeling in the world is buying a house and realizing you can't stand the neighborhood, or the neighbors, and I've been there.

Even though most realtors and home sellers won't appreciate it, I'd also recommend going inside a home at least twice or more if you can swing it. Go during the day and go in the evening. You will get a completely different feel of the property during different times. I have made offers on homes, had counter offers come back, and I insisted to go back and look at the property again. Then, after seeing the property a third time, was convinced I did not want it!

This book covers the basics for beginners and the very minimum a buyer should know before beginning their home search.

Solid, accessible primer on all things home-buying.

As someone actively in the home market...plus endured many a trial and tribulation via a previously bought and sold home...I approached 'Home Buying Kit for Dummies' (HBKD) aiming for some nuggets of wisdom useful in the second go-round.

HBKD certainly meets expectations, a very accessible and well-laid out book that both purchase newbies plus veterans are likely to enjoy. Let the record state it equally useful for realtors as a snapshot on public sentiment toward their industry and the process inherent.

As with most 'dummies' books, skimming comes natural due to content attached to appropriate icons. It's an easy book to bounce around in, pick and choose spots to delve deeper.

To summarize, HBKD separates the home purchase process into logical steps, each backed by forms and documentation you'll need plus obvious trials and triumphs along the way. For those new to the process, having soft copy estimators and purchase docs on the accompanying CD are a fantastic addition, useful for both a gauge on the sophistication of home buying plus what to expect once the plunge is actively taken. The amount of people and paperwork involved truly is staggering.

Refreshingly, this version is very current, with 2012 questions of a tough credit + home value market front and center. The author does a solid job in engaging with current subject matter, explaining technical details native to this market that an astute buyer...or seller...should be asking/answering. For example and in particular, the rent versus purchase section stands out as very salient for today's marketplace.

Still, I can't give HBKD a 5-star blessing as it falls slightly short on connecting its narrative format to the sophisticated processes it presents. While HBKD contains all the needed tools to navigate the process, I was consistently left feeling knowledge short on what things 'meant.' For instance, discussions on tax benefit are accompanied by good estimation calculators, but not a suggestion on how to best reach said numbers. Ditto for recognition of legal links but not really where one can educate his/herself. I left HBKD thinking there's a fine reason good realtors exist: they're the ones to help a buyer make this content leap.

With this being said, there's few - if any - comparable, comprehensive collections of information out there on the entire home buying experience...let alone an accompany CD filled with needed documents. A solid purchase for those looking for their next castle.

A Must Have For New Buyers

I have been in the military for so many years and I've pretty much been renting wherever my boots land. When I decided to buy, I really didn't have anyone to turn to. I went to some family and friends and they gave me some bits and pieces of advise but nothing really concrete.

I really recommend this book to ANYONE looking to buy a home. It doesn't matter if it's your first home or your 4th home, this is currently a buyer's market and it's so important to be equipt than any other time. This book is like having everyone's advise wrapped up into one concise and complete book with GREAT tested experience. I promise you that this book will save you so much time and trouble compared to asking attorneys, landlords, tenants, and real estate agents...(I couldn't begin to tell you the headaches I had after a month of just asking people questions). It really helped me to make a game plan that covered all of the bases.

This book will give you fair footing. Also, it includes a VERY valuable CD.

Enjoyed greatly the global perspective of this book. I have not seen another one like it anywhere. If international is part of your view point at all, you really should read this book. And the stories are fun and encouraging. Great job.

Sensational, but a question about sources

This is a compulsively readable book about a sensational topic. My question is about how the authors handle their sources. First of all, there are some strange mistakes that any fact-checker should have caught. Kaiser Wilhelm was not a "Hapsburg monarch" (p. 36); he was a Hohenzollern. Is it likely that a young butcher's son would study under Roentgen (p. 38) and Bier (p. 41), work with Freud, Jung and Adler (p. 45) and meet Albert Einstein (p. 40)? There are also strange passages about Max's life in the '30s. He supposedly moved to Prague in 1932 because Hitler was chancellor ('33) and because the Reichstag fire ('33) had caused Kristallnacht ('38) (pp.52-53). By 1936 Max was in New York, peddling amphetamines.

There is mention of an unpublished diary (p. 93) and of an unpublished memoir (p. 156) kept by Jacobson, but there is no further discussion of where the diary and memoir are, by whom they are possessed, what dates they cover, of what they consist and how the authors obtained access to them. Much of the book consists of information supposedly obtained from this material; some of the remainder comes from "private interviews" with anonymous sources. The authors describe Jacobson as a narcissistic sociopath, perhaps a mythomaniac. If they are relying on Max's mysterious diary and memoir, they should say so clearly and point out how muddled the documents are and how dubious their accuracy. If these are their own mistakes, it clearly brings into question their credibility.

I have great respect for Seymour Hersh and others whom the authors interviewed. Perhaps a second edition, more carefully sourced and edited, can resolve some of these problems, because the subjects that these authors raise are of enduring interest. Recommended, with qualifications.

This Book Will Not Disappoint!

This is a shocking story about a shocking doctor. It's shocking because he was allowed to "get away with" what he was doing for so many years. I had always heard about JFK's "energy boosting injections", but the real story behind them is all right here...and the only word for it all is SHOCKING. What else is shocking is that it's not only JFK who got dependent on Jacobson's "elixir" - tons of celebrities also partook, and the adventures they all had, at first feeling all high and mighty and then sinking so low when the drugs wore off that they all wanted to kill themselves will cause you to wonder how this guy ever got a license to practice medicine in the first place. I can't believe the "good doctor" thought he was actually helping people! The authors do a very thorough job to back up all their facts with quotes from interviews they conducted with many of the friends and family members of the celebrities they profile, and there are even transcripts from some of the celebrities themselves who were lucky enough to escape from the clutches of the deadly addiction that is more commonly known as Methamphetamine. This book is fascinating all the way through, yet kind of disturbing at times as well. Highly recommended!

Real Eye Opener!

I thought this was an excellent book. Opened my eyes a lot regarding President Kennedy. I can now see why he was assassinated! The man was totally out of control. That doesn't mean I condone it ... I loved this President even with all of his faults!

"I never considered myself to be a musician when I was growing up. In fact, I was thoroughly convinced I did not have what it takes to be able to play music.

I took cello lessons and failed miserable. I took piano lessons without making much progress. I sort of learned to play the recorder in school, if you can call playing hot cross buns playing.

What I’m getting at is that I was a terrible musician. I couldn’t sing, I couldn’t keep time, I couldn’t play an instrument, the list of things I couldn’t do with respect to music is long.

I found this particularly frustrating because my father is an absolutely fantastic professional saxophone player. I figured somewhere in me there had to be an inherent talent for music.

I was very wrong.

What I realized as I grew older was that my father didn’t have an inherent musical talent either. What he did have was an unstoppable drive to succeed.

It took me a few years to get over my false idea that I could never be a good musician.

A few years earlier my father had bought me a guitar as a Christmas present. It was sitting in a dusty case in my room, neglected.

I had recently met a man named Jacob, another amazing musician. Jacob’s talent was with string instruments, particularly the bass. I asked his advice about what I should learn first.

He told me to learn music theory, so I went online and began to read. I read a lot and started to teach myself scales. I was still really terrible at the guitar, but I kept at it, and slowly I improved.

I stress the word slowly.

A couple weeks into this process I asked Jacob to teach me guitar, and he said he would. I quickly found out that Jacob–despite being a wonderful player–is a horrible teacher.

Jacob cannot think like a beginner, he cannot break down the knowledge and present it in bite sized pieces that are easy to swallow and digest.

I wrote this book with that in mind.

During the process of teaching myself the guitar, I learned a lot about how to teach guitar. I applied what I learned to write my best-selling guitar series: Scott's Simple Guitar Lessons.

I’m still learning today. Music is extremely complicated and eclectic. I know for a fact that I will never master music, but that was never my goal.

My goal was to be able to play with other people and enjoy doing it.

I've achieved that goal, and it was worth the work.

Now I want to help you achieve your musical goals, no matter what they are.

I want to use what I learned the slow, hard way to make your learning process fast and easy.

Chords Made Simple gets straight to the point

I have a reasonable grasp of chords: this simple book put what I already knew into a context. Simple, but straight to the point. I now understand much more about chords that I did beforehand. It has, tantalisingly, pushed the door open a little. I particularly liked the section on voicing.

Good Mix of History and Anthropology

Sidney Mintz provides and an excellent background on the impact that sugar has made on humankind in the past 400 years. The theme of the of the books centers on sugar within the British economy and culture but provides a different insight on European colonialism and the impact of specialty items in mercantilism economies. Although the book reads as a straight history text, Mintz, as a trained anthropologist, provides a provocative case study into the intricate relationship among products, consumers and producers. The book is well documented/foot-noted. Any student of economics, anthropology or the history of Colonial/Industrial Britain should grace their bookshelf with this text.

Good case study on commodites and development

I found this book very interesting as I read it for a development anthropology class. Mintz gives a detailed and informative history of the development of sugar as a commodity from the colonial age to the present. Coming from an anthropological point of view, he examines the cultural impact of sugar production on the Carribean nations that produce it. He also displays how British organization of the industry in their colonies created an increasing demand for sugar.

How meaning morphs depending on class

Mintz's book is a bit hard to understand because he approaches the history of sugar from an intensely anthropological perspective. Basically, he studies the meaning associated with sugar (especially in England) during its centuries-long journey across time and economic class. Sugar began as an upper-class commodity. To have sugar displayed one's wealth and status. It was even endowed with magical and medicinal properties. Through colonialism, however, sugar was supplied to England cheaply and it became an daily part of the lower class English diet. It lost its high-status connotations and became a common day product. Mintz also studies the meanings sugar had in literature and speech, and even its effects today. This book is a worthwhile endeavor, and for anthropology, actually almost a fun read.
