Robert Silverberg is the winner of five Hugo and five Nebula awards for his novels and short fiction. His work began appearing during the 1950s; he has received high acclaim for, among many others, such novels as Lord Valentine's Castle (the first in the Majipoor series), Tower of Glass, Dying Inside, and Nightwings.

No Dunk and Egg

This page lies. This book, the Shadows, Gods and Demons "volume", does not contain the Dunk & Egg story by GRRM. Don't be misled like I was. If you are looking for that story, you need to get the Dragon, Sword and King "volume".

Does not contain George Martin's "The Sworn Sword"

Posting this review as a warning. I bought this as a gift for my wife - was hoping to pick up all three chapters of the ASOIAF prequels for her for Christmas. Turns out this edition ("Shadows, Gods, and Demons") is an abridged edition which does not contain his story. Amazon's description of the item contains a statement that the inside flap of the book indicates the George Martin story will be included, but the paperback version does not contain this story. Best of luck and happy shopping!

Love these authors' worlds? Get another peek here.

This series, edited by Robert Silverberg, invited authors of best-beloved SF/F books to write a novella set somewhere in their fictional universe.

How well each novella works for you depends on how well you know-and-love that universe; if you never read Silverberg's series set in Majipoor or if (as for me) that story was enjoyable but not OhWowOhWow, the novella set in that world may be only "okay." If you adored an author's world, however, this is another visit to a favorite country, and just one of these stories could be worth the price of the book.

For me, that was the first tale in the book: Robin Hobb's novella about how the Rain Wilds were settled, set long before the events of the Liveship Traders. This is not an extra bit of dialog scraped off the cutting room floor... it's a whole other examination of Hobb's marvelous world, adding new dimension, characters, history. And it's absolutely wonderful.

I also enjoyed another story from Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" universe -- in which Shadow finds he's made an uncomfortable bargain -- and Anne McCaffrey's examination of what happens when someone (in this case Moreta) is lost "between"... but they were four-stars to me, not five. On the other hand, if I was totally into those worlds, I could easily imagine giving them five-stars. It's that kind of collection.

I haven't made it through the other tales here, yet: one each from Majipoor by Robert Silverberg, from Otherland by Tad Williams, and from Riftwar by Raymond E. Feist. I'm not in a hurry to do so, since I either haven't read those series or it's so long ago that I no longer have the passion for 'em (Majipoor was good, but there are other old Silverberg stories I loved better; I'm aware that such an opinion is in the minority).

However, I'm also not afraid to tackle the novellas, either, since Silverberg writes excellent "Cliff's Notes" before each contribution, summarizing the books in each series; if your memory of Pern is dusty, Silverberg's intro will remind you of the details to bring it all back. And if you read only part of the series (as I did with Majipoor) it's kind of fun to get a sense of what happened after you wandered away.

I really enjoyed this set of novellas. If you're enthusiastic about even one of these worlds, it's worth the price.

Lisa M. Bitel is Professor of History and Religion at the University of Southern California. She is the author of Land of Women and Isle of the Saints, both from Cornell, as well as Landscape with Two Saints and Women in Early Medieval Europe, 400–1100.

Matt Gainer is a documentary photographer whose work explores social and political movements, religious identity and community, and tensions between people and the environments they occupy. His work has been exhibited in North America and Europe at the Brukenthal National Museum, the Museo D'Arte Contemporanea Roma, the El Paso Museum of Art, and the Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juarez.

Easily Understood

I was issued these books as part of my paramedic program. I haven't looked at any other books of this type, but I will say that the way the author lays out the different rythms and covers them in such a way, that it makes it easy for the beginner student to understand. The pocket reference is great and is small enough to carry with you for fast reference. Highly recommended.

Great book for people just starting to interpret ECGs

If you have always seen the tele monitors in the hospital and don't know what the zigzag on it means, this is the book you need when you have to take an intensive critical care course.
This was a required text for my critical care course and amazon did a good job shipping it on time.
I liked the book and as many times as i've studied conduction in my A&P classes, the fact that i'm a physics and chemistry person makes me forget certain stuff in bio. This book does such a good job of explaining conduction in making you really understand what happens in various stages like depolirazion and repolization. I like the approach because you kinda need to know which ions are coming out at each phase so you'll know when to prescribe a calcium channel blocker for a patient and when to prescribe a class II or II antiarrhythmic.

I didn't get time to use the CD because time moves so fast when you're under stress but i did love the pocket companion and the only thing is that it doesn't tell you the treatments in it. You'll have to look at the big book itself to know how to treat a 3rd degree block. I never thought i'd be able to get the heart blocks down in my head but thanks to this book i did.

Just a little thing i'll share with readers, here's one way to remember a wenkenbach. It goes "longer, longer, longer, longer, then you have a wenkenbach."

the P-r interval keeps getting longer and longer till you finally dorp a qrs. My instructor sang it in a silly way and i thought i'd share it. In that way you'll recognize a Mobitz type I when you see one.
I tried different ECG books and this one one worked for me.

We had a cardiology professor who told us we were not to use this bookThe ECG Made Easy, that it was terrible and inaccurate and inadequate and lots of other things that meant we shouldn't use it. He told us he would fail us if we used this book. For some reason though, despite his and others tutorials and lectures, I could never understand ECGs. I was desperate! So I bought this book. It was small enough to memorise. I set out to memorise it, one to two pages per day. I think it took me a few weeks to do. And it meant I could finally interpret ECGs. I got through my exams, and even better I could still interpret basic ECGs during my intern year. I think what that cardiology professor never understood is that everyone has to start somewhere and if you can master the basics then you have something solid to build on.

About the Author
Julia Keay was the author of several acclaimed biographies including The Spy Who Never Was, With Passport and Parasol and Alexander the Corrector. She also wrote numerous BBC radio documentaries, including two plays, and, with her husband John Keay, co-edited two editions of the Encyclopaedia of Scotland and the third edition of the London Encyclopaedia. The text of Farzana was completed just before her death in 2011.

The best in the series so far

I really don't know how Robert does it. This has been a complex story arc over six books which draws to an epic and fabulous conclusion. And I ask myself how it is that, despite having given us 16 (yep 16) books with Sienna Nealon in them, the writing isn't jaded, and the plot lines fresh. And he still manages to throw in a surprise (or 20) .

I sit here, along for the ride, and loving every single minute. This is, I think, the best yet in the series. I don't want to say more for fear of #spoilers. But. In case you didn't already know it, Sienna is a bad ass. BAD ASS I tell you.

Robert Crane does it again!!!

There is nothing better than opening your Kindle and finding that your next Robert Crane novel has arrived. You find yourself contemplating taking the day off, so you can answer the questions from the previous book. Vengeful is yet another success in the continuing saga of Sienna, the Girl in the Box and now Out of the Box. Robert Crane does not disappoint as he continues the suspense and excitement of the next installment in The Girl Out of the Box series. As with the earlier installments in this series, you find yourself thinking you know where he is going with the story line when suddenly he hits you out of left field and you can’t help but be impressed. You find yourself both frustrated and enthused with his expertise in storytelling. He truly does think out the box as he directs you exactly where he wants you to be. Well worth the read and leaves you eagerly anticipating and wondering what he might come up with in the next book and counting the days until it is available (February 17th). Just as with his Sanctuary series, his excellence in weaving a compelling story shines through and the reader can only sit back and enjoy the ride.
