A must if you haven't used Outlook for a while

I used to be an administrative assistant, and when my old home computer crashed last month, I replaced it with a new model -- Windows 10 and Microsoft Office 2016, It was a shock to see how obsolete my Microsoft Office skills had become in five years of retirement, so I simply had no choice but to buy this book to start reloading all the Outlook data I had lost. Instructions are at once succinct, clear, and thorough, thank goodness! So far, the only complaint I have is that this volume is smaller than other "Dummies" I have bought in the past. Therefore, the graphics are smaller, and I had to hunt for a magnifying glass.

Almost overnight, Abbott became one of the few black millionaires of his time. By 1920, the Defender tagline was the Worlds Greatest Weekly. The story of the Defender is one of inspiration, struggles, and triumphs and of dreams coming true. It became a beacon and voice for those who for years had no voice. The Defender produced talents such as Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, and W. E. B. DuBois. In 1940, Abbotts nephew John H. H. Sengstacke took over as publisher, and by 1956, the Defender was a daily newspaper.

The Chicago Defender in Images of America

Isabel Wilkerson's 2011 book, "The Warmth of Other Suns" By Wilkerson, Isabel The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration Reprint Edition Paperback brought to life for many readers the epic migration of African Americans from the South to other regions of the United States beginning during WW I. One of the most influential voices in encouraging the Migration was an African American Newspaper, the Chicago Defender. A new photographic history, "Chicago Defender" (2012) by Myiti Stengstake Rice offers an overview of the paper and its influence. Rice, a descendant of the family which owned the paper for most of its life, is a professor of African American Studies at Northeastern Illinois University. The book is part of the Images of America Series of Arcadia Press, which specializes in photographic histories of local American life.

In her Introduction, Rice emphasizes the role of the Chicago Defender in the Great Migration with its emphasis on the poverty, lynchings, and discrimination in the region and the possibility of a better life elsewhere. The paper declared May 15, 1917, as the date of the "Great Northern Drive" with a call for African Americans to head north. The paper described the South as "the land where every foot of land marks a tragedy. Every black man for the sake of his wife and daughter should leave, even at a financial sacrifice, every spot in the South where his worth is not appreciated enough to give him the standing of a man."

The history of the book focuses largely on the early years of the Chicago Defender from 1905 -- 1940 under the leadership of Robert Sengstake Abbott (1868 -- 1940).Educated as a lawyer, Abbott founded the paper in 1905 and ran it himself for five years. The paper struggled as a handbill and could not find distributors. When Abbott began his crusade for migration, many Southern States attempted to suppress the paper and it was carried to local communities by railroad porters and by entertainers. By 1915, the paper had a staff and a growing readership. Abbott soon became one of two early Twentieth Century African American millionaires, (together with Madam C.J. Walker). The first half of the book includes many photographs of Abbott's early years in the South and of the paper and its growing influence.

With Abbott's death in 1940, his nephew and hand-picked successor, John Stengstake, took over the paper. The book shows how The Defender's influence continued to grow under Stengtstake's leadership. For example, the paper's columnists in the 1940's included, W.E.B. DuBois, Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Mary MacLeod Bethune, one of the most formidable groups of writers that could be assembled for any paper. Stengstake and the Defender were driving forces in securing two Executive Orders from President Truman in 1948. The first Order provided for the desegregation of the military while the second created the Fair Employment Practices Commission, the predecessor of the modern-day EEOC. Stengstake expanded the scope and circulation of the paper dramatically and created a powerful umbrella organization for the African American press.

A short chapter of the book documents the role of Stengstake's wife Myrtle in the Chicago Defender and in Chicago's Civic life. A chapter focuses on the Bud Billiken (a fictitious cartoon character) Parade which the Defender began in August, 1929, and which has become a fixture of Chicago's African American life. A final chapter of the book offers examples of the extensive documentary photography of the African American community by Stegstake's son Bobby overa period of 50 years. The book closes with the paper's headlines when Barack Obama received his party's nomination for president. Obama had been a columnist for the Chicago Defender for several years.

The book offers a good overview through its photographs and text of the Chicago Defender and of African American communities in Chicago and in the South. The focus was somewhat topheavy on the Abbott and Stengstake families and on their personal lives. The pages of the Chicago Defender constitute a priceless resource for readers wishing to understand the African American experience. The book could have used more of an emphasis on the paper and its contents.

This Images of America book meets the mission of the series in covering local American places and institutions. It shows how an initially small local newspaper came to assume a historically important role in American life.

Mostly updates with 18 more chapters

This is simply a revamped Morgan compared to the last one. Mostly everything is in color, more bold points made throughout each chapter, but the same easy to follow layout, and more logically organized. Still missing some of the little things like where the PISS pins are located, and they took out some of the arterial line curves and some other little things that I can't remember during my speed reading of the book that irked me (just adding all the tiny details would have made it a more comprehensive book). Other than that they added a chapter on perioperative management, and a whole section on periop care (mostly reorganized chapters that already existed and added I think about 3 more), separated neurosurgery from people with neurological/psychiatric diseases, and overall added over 200 more pages. It's a good remodel, same good foundation, with some of the new medications and technological advances in the field of anesthesia. Would definitely recommend it, especially for people that like visual stimulation while they are studying.

Wish I had read it before the election

It is a moot point now after the election ... I've voted and Obama's the next president. I just wish I had read this book earlier since it would have helped bolster my arguments with neighbors and friends regarding Obama's plan of action for the next four years. I finished this book in one day which, lately, is unusual for me as I am hitting a reading slump.

The first half of the book is a summary of the issues Obama would like to address once he is in office. He addresses the issues of global warming, education, women's rights, family planning, the war in Iraq, job security, health care, taxes and more (all issues that are dear to most Americans). I've followed his debates closely and tried to do all the research is necessary in making my decision on whom to vote and this book is a simplified guide to the issues and instead of lamenting what is wrong with our country, Obama is providing a course of action on what he would like to see happen. This is a non-partisanship book, which I really appreciate. There's no back-stabbing, no finger jabs at the previous adminstration and etc. It is just a straight-forward course of action ... if everyone in Congress will work together.

The second half of the book is his seven speeches and I will be the first to admit that listening to Obama speaking is a treasure ... wish I had the opportunity to hear him speak in person when he was in the area. Reading his speeches is almost just as good. He is an eloquent speaker and the compassion he holds for his fellow countrymen/women is evident in his speeches as well in the written word. If people still have doubts about Obama, this book is a good place to start reading. It may not be Pultizer Prize winning but it is a very good book and a start to get more information on what the Obama administration wants to have for the next four years.

Throughout his plan and his speeches, Obama has been consistent about one thing. He challenges Americans of all stages in life to work together. He challenges Americans to fight back and regain their lost dreams/hopes and he provides hope for the people. I will admit that he is the first politican who is inspiring. I've seen how many people turn off their TV sets and canvass the streets to provide a way for the people to vote. This is the first campaign where people are active in talking and sharing about their beliefs and how they would like to see things change. Obama has provided inspiration and hope for the people and it's evident in this book as well.

I was mesmerized while reading!

I thought I knew a lot about Barack Obama prior to reading this book, but I learned so much about the man himself. What an inspiration. It definitely solidified my vote for him as our future president. I feel he is more than ready and has lived his whole life helping others to prove it.

recommended to all those interested in photographic theory..

Had this book been available during my degree in photography, I would have found it invaluable as an introduction not only to key texts to read alongside the originals, but also as an introduction to a wider range of approaches and writers of photographic criticism. After my degree even, it has been an enlightening book to read.

Ashley la Grange makes photographic theory accessible to those intimidated or unfamiliar with the sometimes overly complicated language used, and guides the reader through points that can be difficult to grasp without losing complexities of the original work.

Having worked with A-level students of photography since my graduation, I have found this an ideal book to not only introduce pupils to main ideas and terminology used in theory, but also to encourage personal responses through thought provoking questions included at the end of each chapter.

This book is different to other introductory books on photographic criticism in that its aims are not only to offer an overview of main debates and texts, but to help the reader gain a greater understanding of what they contain.

Basic Critical Theory for Photographers

This is a very useful book for anyone who wants to understand what photographs mean; how a particular meaning is constructed by the photographer and how different meanings are interpreted by the viewers.

The book is a summary of `essential texts' on photographic practice and theory. It's not critical theory in the technical academic sense; rather it is a selection of texts that it is critical to understand to gain some insight into the workings of photography. The selection of texts covers basic ideas of how photographs are constructed to semiotics, structuralism, post structuralism and post modernism to literature, poetry and philosophy. The book is targeted to a variety of audiences from high school students, to university students and advanced practitioners. It does help though to have a basic understanding of semiotics to get into some of the more difficult material.

A few years ago I completed a Masters degree in photography and many of the core texts from the course are included in this book. It is all well done, the summary of the texts are clear (or as clear as it's possible to be with some of this material). la Grange usefully includes a series of questions after each text that explores the key points and debates from the text. He also suggests photographic exercises that can be undertaken to explore the individual points. The plus side to all this is that he provides a relatively easy route to understanding this material without wading through the original books and articles. The down side is of course that many people will now not read the originals and loose much of the detail of the arguments.

The book starts with John Berger's Ways of Seeing (standard fare for any photo course). He then summarises Szarkowski's The Photographers Eye and Shore's The Nature of Photographs. Inevitably (and rightly) we get a long précis of Susan Sontag's On Photography that draws out many of the problematic ideas and half thoughts from her book. This is followed by Roalnd Barthes Camera Lucida which is mainly useful for the idea of `punctum'.

We then get a series of shorter pieces: Martha Rosler In, Around and Afterthoughts, Clive Scott The Spoken Image: Photography and Language, Andy Grundberg's The Crisis of the Real, Bertrand Russell on Appearance and Reality, Italo Calvino's short story The Adventures of a
Photographer and some poems by Felix Morrisseau-Leroy and George Szirtes

Also included is Raghubhir Sing's River of Colour where he argues that western sensibility tied to Judaeo-Christian values allows the creation of black and white photographic practice, whereas in India the values and world view of Hinduism promotes only the exploration of colour; interesting stuff. Finally a short section of Robert Adams, John Baldessari and Peter Goodwin's Analysis of Particular Photographs

Its hard to see how anyone can really understand the nature of photography without working through these texts. La Grange's book is therefore fully recommended. Go read.......

Cliffs Notes for Photographers

Perhaps even before considering this particular book, one might want to ask whether a study of photographic critical theory and philosophy will actually help a photographer to take better pictures. I would suspect that would depend, at least in part, on the genre that a photographer worked in. Much of the recognized current critical theory points toward a deconstructionist view of photography that attacks the validity of photographs and the use to which society puts them. I suspect the post-modernist photographer might benefit more than a traditional photographer who is primarily concerned with creating a beautiful image. (I know I invite attack for this over-simplification, but an adequate discussion of the utility of critical theory would require another book.) I asked a number of photographers their opinion and received a wide variety of responses. So be warned in advance that not every photographer will benefit from such study.

This book makes reference to a number of books and essays that are seminal works in the modern (or perhaps, post-modern) photography canon. They include John Berger's "Ways of Seeing: Based on the BBC Television Series"; John Szarkowski's "The Photographer's Eye"; and Susan Sontag's "On Photography (Penguin Modern Classics)" as well as a number of important shorter essays. Indeed the only major work omitted seemed to be Walter Benjamin's "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction".

La Grange's method is to provide a summary of the works, and then to provide a series of questions and exercises relating to the particular piece.

I confess that I did not read every summary presented because I found reading the summaries to be less than useful, although I did read at least one half of the book.

In several cases I compared the summaries to the original work. I found that in a few cases the summary was almost as long as the original work. However, many of these original works were very precisely developed with each idea clearly articulated, repeated and exemplified, so that the work was like a series of short geometric chords, each dependent on the previous, that, when observed from a distance formed an arc of ideas. Le Grange's summaries were more like long chords that missed many of the intermediated points and created a jagged figure. As a result it was often impossible for me to follow the original argument in the summary while a reading of the original revealed the author's points far more clearly.

Add to this the fact that many of the covered authors have a writing style that is worth following for its own sake, apart for the content, and that the summaries make no effort to capture that style.

Why someone would prefer to provide summaries of such complex works rather than the originals is beyond my comprehension. At first I suspected that there might have been a problem securing reprint rights, but another book that covers the same ground, "The Photography Reader", edited by Liz Wells, reprints original essays and important extracts of most of the readings in the la Grange book.

If there is any value to a photographer in reading critical theory, I would recommend that he or she read the original books and essays. Then, if they wish to refresh their memory at some future date, this book may prove useful. I would also recommend that the photographer interested in working in traditional forms might benefit from reading "Photography in Print: Writings from 1816 to the Present", edited by Vicki Goldberg.

Dark and twisted

I'm going for non-spoilery, so bear with me here. Okay, it starts with a bang -- a scene in the past with the two main characters, Elise and James, who were powerful hunters of evil. Something horrific happened and they retired. We are thrust into the present time, where Elise and James are living out their very normal lives. That is until they end up trying to exorcise a little girl.

It gets worse.

As an aside, I have to say: I'm not familiar with actual exorcism or demonology. I believe there are some elements in Elise's exorcisms that are taken from true exorcism. I was impressed with it. It was simple, clean, and rang true for me whether or not it's actually real. But most importantly, it made perfect sense within the context of the world Reine created in Death's Hand. Also something else I liked was the bond between Elise and James. It's actually a magical bond. I don't believe they are in love or anything like that, but are close friends that would die for each other. I thought it was refreshing to see something other than a soulmate/mating-type bond between a man and a woman.

Okay, back to the story. There's this goddess of death that Elise encountered before who swore she'd come back for Elise. And she's in an object that is wielded by a powerful witch/necromancer. You'll never guess who it is (I knew from reading a previous draft, but the way it's laid out will surprise you). *winks* So between the possessed girl, the workings of the death goddess, the newly-risen dead (zombies?), Elise and James have their hands full. They're forced out of retirement.

What happens is twisty and dark and awful, but it ends happily, I assure you. But you'll have issues putting it down. The last 100 pages flew for me, and I was technically proofreading, except I kinda forgot to keep an eye out at that point. I admit that. It completely riveted me to the point where I was sitting at work counting down the hours until I could go home and read more. It's nuts.

Another thing, too. This is a very unique take on demons, exorcism, witches, necromancers. There is a lot of that out there, but you'll find Death's Hand refreshingly different. I like the elements of the paranormal and the grittiness of dark fantasy. It really, really works.

So, whatcha waitin' for? Check it out.

Also, this is the first book in SM Reine's Descent series. It is a complete story, but there is one teeny tiny little thing at the end that will flow into the next book, which I believe is called The Darkest Gate. I can't wait to read that. I'm kind of addicted -- uh, actually I am addicted to these stories. ....Yeah.

Red Iris Publishing is new to the game and I believe they will become one of the finest publishers out there. With writers like SM Reine, it's a certainty. So check them out.

Just can't go on

I downloaded this book because a) it promised the start of a fantastic series (going by the reviews) and b) it was free! Win-win, I thought.

I'm now 22% into the story on my Kindle and I just can't continue reading it. Why give up so soon, you wonder? Simply put, character building. I do not like Elise! She's hard, unfeeling and treats her friends like dirt. I don't feel any chemistry between her and James, their conversations are flat, her emotions are flat, there's little world building happening and I haven't a clue what's happening with the storyline.

Maybe my reading ability swings to a more easily written story line (which the number of high reviews seem to attest) but having read and enjoyed just over 300 UF books over the past year, this one does not deserve the 4.5 current rating.

Sadly I will not be reading any more of SM Reine' s books.

Wow.. it will capture you! Thrilling!

First I'm older and second I'm not all that thrilled with the vampire, paranormal, etc. books that are out there, so I rarely read one. With that said, I was engrossed in this book! The author has a way of writing that captures you right away and keeps you reading to find out what happens next. I don't think there was one page in this book that didn't have some action going on. I'm usually a thriller kind of gal and this book, although not the "usual" thriller was thrilling just the same. I kept turning pages, I kept ducking, peering around me and waiting for whatever would happen next. Please read this book even if you don't think it's your cup of tea - I was amazed and I will be looking for more books by this author. Oh I did get this book when it was one of the free kindle books of the day AND I usually do like books about witches - but this was nothing like I expected it to be and I bet it's not what you think it will be either.

So, give it a try - it's worth it and it will keep you entertained!

LOVE. I have so much love and appreciation for Sawyer Bennett. She simply is an amazing author who continues to write beautiful love stories and LOVE: UNCIVILIZED really captured this sentiment to the core. I love when authors surprises readers with a follow-up novella that allows readers to get a glimpse of what happened to their favorite fictional characters and I couldn't be more thrilled to catch up with Zach and Moira. Love takes place eight years later and Zach and Moira are happily married with their two beautiful kids but along the way, that sizzling connection that they shared had a few bumps along the way. Zach is constantly busy at work and staying late. He is missing out on quality family time. And Moira is a stay at home mom who misses teaching. As they go on through the monotone motions of life, they both realized that they need to get back that spark and connection that made them Zach and Moira. Can Zach and Moira reignite their devotion and love for each other?

I absolutely loved this novella because it's so raw, honest and exposes the reality of any marriage. Zach and Moira could easily represent any married couple with children. Sometimes we got so busy with our work that we fail to see the really important things in life. Like quality time with the children and making more an effort to appreciate and be there for your significant other. I love that Ms. Bennett exposes that yes Moira and Zach are soulmates but they are humans who can easily make mistakes. But rest assured Zach and Moira still have that burning LOVE and spark to set hearts racing. What else can I say but go read this sweet, touching, and raw novella. Be prepared to fall in love all over again with Zach and Moira. Thank you Sawyer Bennett for this beautiful, uplifting and inspiring love story.

I just knew it was Sawyer Bennett and I love her writing

Confession time, when I signed up to read and review this book I didn’t realize it was a novella to another story. I just knew it was Sawyer Bennett and I love her writing, so I signed up immediately. That being said, I loved it and now I just want to read Moira and Zach’s story.

Love: Uncivilized picks up with Zach and Moira eight years later. They are married with children, living the dream and their happily ever after. Look I am not a fan of stories like this, I prefer to go into my bubble and pretend that things are always good and happy in my romances. So, I was crazy nervous to read this – even knowing I hadn’t read their original story – I still wanted to my happily ever after.

I was completely wrong in my fear, because this story just made this couple more endearing and real to me. I completely fell in love with these two. Moira and Zach are not perfect. They have insecurities and issues, but I loved how they worked through them and in the end choose to fight. I love how despite their issues they never questioned their love and commitment to each other and their family.

This novella was absolutely perfect and I do think reading Uncivilized first would just make me love it so much more. So while you can read it as a standalone, I will warn you, it will definitely have you reaching for their original story!

This is What Happily Ever After Looks Like.....

Uncivilized was one of my favorite books of 2014. I love that Sawyer Bennett has given us a behind the sunset view of Zach & Moira's life, eight years later. It is sweet. It is messy. But it is a life that feels authentic to not only this amazing couple, but anyone who is balancing all the things in their lives. This book couldn't have come at a more perfect time. Loved it so much!!
