Specifically, Lombardo ties organized crime to the emergence of machine politics in America's urban centers. From nineteenth-century vice syndicates to the modern-day Outfit, Chicago's criminal underworld could not have existed without the blessing of those who controlled municipal, county, and state government. These practices were not imported from Sicily, Lombardo contends, but were bred in the socially disorganized slums of America where elected officials routinely franchised vice and crime in exchange for money and votes. This book also traces the history of the African-American community's participation in traditional organized crime in Chicago and offers new perspectives on the organizational structure of the Chicago Outfit, the traditional organized crime group in Chicago.

Badly Needed Scholarly Approach

This book is an objective accounting of organized crime in Chicago from a historical and sociological perspective. You won't find fanciful stories and romanticized tales here. Just facts supported by solid research, along with the author's views on the true origins of organized crime in Chicago, namely, a corrupt political system willing to support and protect anybody that provided money and votes. My father lived and worked in this cesspool his whole life, and understanding just how bad it was has helped me understand him a little better. Trying to stay above it all was like swimming against the tide. Thanks Professor Lombardo for filling a huge gap in the literature.

Great book, this is a researched, well informed book. The author looks at the subject as if it was a college class study. And it raises a valid theory that Italians didnt bring OC to Chicago, nor America for that matter. The black Policy Kings are mentioned in the book as well, such as Theodore "Teddy" Roe, who was half Italian himself, yet never backed down from Giancana & The Outfit, whom were trying to take over his policy racket. Again, this book takes the educational approach. If youre merely interested in the "we killed this guy, garroted this guy and buried him on an indian reserve. Oh, and we banged so many broads, youse wouldnt believe it" Henry Hill, Jimmy The Weasel type books, this one isnt for you.

Although young Jorge is a good ballplayer, his father warns him that to be the best he must learn to be a switch-hitter. Reluctantly, the boy takes up the challenge and practices with his father, friends, and coach as Casa Cuba's big game with its archrival team looms. Abruptly, Jorge and his family are visiting New York City. While watching a game at Yankee Stadium, the boy declares, Some day I'm going to play here. On the following page, the action moves to the big game in Puerto Rico, where Jorge is having a miserable time at the plate. On his last at-bat, he drives home his teammates with a game-winning double. Colón's soft, impressionistic, watercolor-and-pencil illustrations fail to enliven or add interesting detail to this bland story. With its predictable and simplistic message of determination and hard work, it adds nothing fresh or memorable to the genre of children's sports stories. Jorge Posada is an all-star catcher for the New York Yankees, a position he has held since 2000. Laura Posada is an attorney, a certified personal trainer, and CEO of Laura Posada, LLC. The couple lives with their two children, Jorge Luis and Paulina, in Florida.

Robert Burleigh is the award-winning author of many books for children, including The Adventures of Mark Twain by Huckleberry Finn, illustrated by Barry Blitt; Night Flight, illustrated by Wendell Minor; and Black Whiteness, illustrated by Walter Lyon Krudop. His many other books include Hoops; Stealing Home; and Clang! Clang! Beep! Beep! He lives in Michigan.

Raúl Colón has illustrated several highly acclaimed picture books, including Draw!; the New York Times bestselling Angela and the Baby Jesus by Frank McCourt; Susanna Reich’s José! Great baseball book for kids!

Okay, I have no idea what a few of the other reviewers are talking about. If you and your child enjoy baseball, there's no way you wouldn't consider this book a homerun.

I'm not a Yankees fan, but I really enjoyed this book. My four-year-old got it when he was three, loves it, and wants to read it over and over.

The story is written by Posada with the help of Robert Burleigh, the author of the excellent Home Run: The Story of Babe Ruth. The illustrations are excellent. The story moves along at a perfect pace, is well written, and shows a young player that baseball takes a lot of patience.

This book belong on your shelf with Casey At the Bat: A Ballad of the Republic Sung in the Year 1888 (Caldecott Honor Book), Take Me Out to the Ballgame (Aladdin Picture Books) and other great children's baseball books.

I like the pictures and basic ideas. That's about it. This book is lacking in understandable directions and skips steps. It also requires you to purchase templates from other companies if you want to actually do the project in the book. It only provides a few templates at the back. I priced one template at $20 (it came with two other templates) on the recommended website. That is more than I paid for the book! It could have provided the measurements rather than refer you to something you have to go buy. I am disappointed.

I have only made a few of the cards from the book so far, and they came out nice.
I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because some of the directions were not clear and I had to re-do a couple of the
steps again. I have not seen book #1 so don't know how this one compares to it.
Still I would recommend it to a friend.

There are so many great tutorials online at no cost to make these kinds of cards so you don't have to buy this book but it is handy to have the instructions written down that you can keep right next to you without having to drag your laptop to your craft table. I was hoping for many more types of interactive cards, the selection was limited and I didn't like them all.

Great reference for classical perspective

A more technical approach to perspective than other books on perspective that I have read. Waston uses analysis of illustrators to demonstrate the points of perspective. I found this most entertaining and interesting.
I try to read this periodically to re-enforce and re-learn the principles of perspective.

I had read this book before purchasing it. I bought it to re-read and absorb the points made in the book. It will definitely get you thinking about how to "modify" the perspective in your picture to get the view right.
