Amusing Regency With a Little Mystery

The heroine Meg Stanton-Lynch is a transplanted American - granddaughter of a Duke, and of course not having been brought up within the pompous strictures of the English nobility did not know at first that the divinely handsome guest at her cousins wedding was so taboo! She saw only that no one seemed to be speaking or associating with him so she took it upon herself to act as a one-woman welcoming committee.
Justin St. James, knew at once that this bright, beautiful and friendly young woman was running the risk of ruining her reputation by her innocent overtures of friendship towards him. He knew she did not know of his reputation which was why he kept telling her that she shouldn't be seen associating with him. Of course the more he tried to remove himself from her sphere the more the stubborn Miss would close in. He was known as the `devil earl' unjustly accused of murder and banished by society and his own family for six years. He had returned, at the demise of his uncle and cousin, to inherit an earldom, guardianship of his young ward Emily, and also to try to find the person who had committed a murder that he had been accused of. Nothing however had prepared him for the unrelenting attraction for this very `cheeky' young beautiful American.
Other than wanting to slap the heroine silly for acting like such a ninny, I did enjoy this amusing romance. What I could not condone though, were the half-baked protests of the heroine after she `gave' her innocence to Justin and would not marry him. They were too far-fetched and belabored for my tastes. Justin, on the other hand was a superbly drawn out hero. He was strong, yet vulnerable when he was so shaken over his inability to understand or be able to remedy his relationship with his ward Emily. He was also quite honorable and extremely patient with Meg's inability to understand the chaos she was creating by not accepting Justin's marriage proposal. The numerous secondary characters all blended in well and a couple were possibly introduced to be featured in their own stories down the road, especially the young ward Emily. The sensuality was extremely pleasant and very well done - definitely this is worth a recommended `to be read' spot on your lists.

90 pages too long

Meg Stanton-Lynch is an American granddaughter of a Duke. Justin St. James is a deadly handsome Earl with a ward named Emily and he had been banished from England for 6 years as everyone thought he killed his cousin's fiance. Well, of course he didn't and of course Meg knows this and wants to help Justin clear his name. But here is the vastly annoying part of the book - even after sleeping with Justin, she won't marry him. Her denying his proposal was about a 100 pages and it was about 90 pages too long. She loved him! She knew he liked her, appreciated her, needed her. So he did out outright say he loved her, well, it was unrealistic that she would continue to say no even after it was apparent that her refusal caused a rift in his relationship with Pen and her husband. She was childish and frankly uninteresting. Also, everytime she did something a tad out of the common way for an English gal, it was always, well, I'm an American!

4 & 1/2 stars -- wonderful lead characters

I actually liked this one better than the first one (A Necessary Husband). Meg (Margaret) was a secondary character in the first book, sister of hero Garrett. She is quite charming, delightful, witty. Her only big flaw is that she's still angry and hurt with her brother about his past choices (to go to sea); it doesn't really work with the past book--at least not until the very end when she finally voices her real fears. Justin is simply a dream--handsome, noble, honorable, mysterious, tender...but with a temper (he yells a lot when he's angry). You can't help but love these two right from the start. It's so obvious how good they'll be for each other.
There are some moments of needless repetition and too many "she's/I'm American" excuses (Is there perhaps a lack of understanding of American culture during the period?), but this book is still enchanting, mainly because of the two leads. The mystery which has haunted Justin for years and made him the scourge of society is well-played. The resolution is perhaps a bit too speedy, but as a whole the mystery works.
Meg's reasons for refusing Justin's offer of marriage seem silly at first. It takes a long time to discover the truth, in part because it takes her a long time to admit the truth, even to herself. It takes realizing just how much her refusal is hurting all those she cares about--a result of her not really understanding how English society works. once she admits the truth about her fears, she faces them and overcomes them.
An excellent read.

This book should have been titled "The South Florida Road ...

This book should have been titled "The South Florida Road Trip". The author completely ignores everything north of central Florida and the entire panhandle. Half the state is not discussed. He refers to Daytona as the northern Atlantic coast. Daytona is 2 hours south of the border and clearly in central Florida. As it only covers half the state it only gets half the stars.

My favorite part about this book was the vegetarian dishes. My girlfriend and I are not 'completely' vegetarian, but our diet consists mainly of vegetables, and the veggie dishes in this book are great. Especially the Zucchini & Pepper Lasagna. YUM. But for those other times when we want to experiment outside of our regular diet these recipes are great.

We are both very busy so it is difficult to think of different dinners to make, especially sometimes when it needs to be quick. This book is a great library of recipes that are excellent and flavorful. Health is a huge part of our lives, and we can tell that the creators of this book care about your health just as much as we care about our own. Great book and easy to scroll through and pick out breakfast, dinner, or lunch anytime!

Feel great and eat great food (fast!)

I rarely write reviews, but since I have found myself talking to everyone about how great this cookbook is, I thought maybe others would want to know as well. At first I was worried that there'd wouldn't be enough variety in the recipes - but there is! And then I thought they might require a bunch of odd, expensive ingredients - but the don't! There are enough recipes here for several weeks of meals, and everything I've made has been fast and fantastic! I don't arrive home from work until 6:30pm; these recipes are fast enough that we are typically eating by 7:30. I feel great and these are some of the best flavors I've ever had - and I'm in my mid-40s so that is saying a lot! I can't recommend this book enough - I hope they come out with a secod version with even more great recipes!

I'm doing so well on Phase 1. Why can't I stay on it indefinitely?

There are two types of people on the South Beach Diet: those who cannot wait to start Phase 2 and those who never want to see Phase 1 end.

Why are some people so enamored with Phase 1? The reason is that it's simple and to the point. You don't have to do a lot of thinking about food choices. You're basically eating lean protein, high-fiber legumes, low-fat dairy, good fats (including some nuts), and plenty of vegetables. Those highly processed refined carbs that were your downfall are out of sight and, within a few days, out of mind (at least for most people). You're encouraged to eat until you're full and snack before you get hungry. And every time you step on the scale, you get a big grin on your face because those unwanted pounds and fat are just melting away. So it's not surprising to me that Phase 1 fans often ask, "If I'm doing so well on Phase 1, why do I have to move on to Phase 2?" Phase 1 is not meant to be a long-term eating plan. Its dual goals are to jump-start weight loss for people who have 10 or more pounds to lose (thus providing immediate positive reinforcement) and to control swings in blood sugar and eliminate cravings for sugar and refined starches. Phase 1 can also have a positive effect on sugar in people with pre-diabetes. In just 2 weeks, you should have achieved these two goals and be ready to move on.

Once your sugar and cravings are under control, there's a key reason to go on to Phase 2: we don't want you to miss out on the myriad vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that come from reintroducing whole fruits and whole grains to your diet, not to mention the added fiber. These foods contain thousands of phytochemicals that protect your body against a host of diseases, including heart disease and cancer. If you were to continue indefinitely on Phase 1 and deny yourself these foods, you would not be learning how to make good food choices in the real world. More importantly, you'd be missing out on some of the best medicine nature has to offer.

In addition, if you were to continue with the smaller palette of foods recommended on Phase 1, your diet would get dull over the long haul. And once you're bored, you're much more likely to revert to your old eating habits. For the diet to truly become a lifestyle--one that allows you to sustain weight loss and garner all the related health benefits--there has to be variety and satisfaction in your eating plan. That's another reason why we move you on to Phase 2 so quickly.

Remember, it may take you longer to lose weight by following the three phases of our diet. But the chances of keeping that weight off are far better.

Can I still eat as much protein now that I'm eating more carbohydrates on Phase 2?

As you know, on the South Beach Diet, we don't expect you to count grams of protein or weigh your food on any phase. Now that you're gradually adding satisfying high-fiber whole grains and fruits to your diet on Phase 2, you'll naturally be less hungry, and the amount of lean protein you require to feel full will no doubt be less than you were eating on Phase 1. That said, I encourage you to eat some protein--fish or shellfish, lean beef or pork, white meat chicken or turkey, or soy protein, for example--along with these good carbs at most meals.

Protein helps slow down the digestion of carbohydrates, which means that your body will make less insulin, your sugar swings will be reduced, and you won't crave more food in between meals. I also urge you to eat slowly, savor your food, and really enjoy the variety of foods you'll introduce on Phase 2. If you do this, your focus will no longer be on how much protein you can have because you'll never be hungry. Another tip: Once you're satisfied, push your chair away from the table. It's fine to leave some food on your plate at the end of a meal.

Can I really eat anything I want on Phase 3?

If you're talking about dessert as an occasional treat, of course. On Phase 3, we don't regulate what you can eat. Yes, you can finally have that small bowl of ice cream or a small piece of chocolate cake or the white bagel that you couldn't have before. But you shouldn't do it too often, and you should continue to watch amounts on desserts. Phase 3 isn't about abandoning the good principles of the diet and suddenly resuming your old eating habits. It's about continuing to make smart, healthy food choices--for life. If you follow the principles of the diet most of the time, we expect you to enjoy anything you want now and then.

Effective, yes.

Probably the most effective diet I ever tried. We get the old revision in a Garage Sale, but decided to have the new revision base in new data and research for food nutritional facts. Even better than before. In the first two weeks, following the diet, I loose 10 pounds, no kidding. Effective, yes.

Nothing makes you lose weight faster than cutting carbs in my experience, but Atkins is too restrictive. This diet lets you add in a little bit more and gives you some easy exercises to do to strengthen and build muscle for more calorie burn. I haven't been using it for too long but so far it seems doable.

My wife and I have only been trying this (slowly implementing this into our life style changes) now for approximately 5 days and I have already shed 13#'s and it isn't as hard as expected! Feel better than I have in years and do NOT have to give up anything that I like to eat. The first 2 weeks are restrictive but not as bad as one thinks! Even fun to create new recipes using allowed, healthier ingredients! Can't wait to hit my goal and become ME again!!! Already not feeling like needing to nap mid day after only 5 days! Love it!!

- The way you think about things:

You see the world as structured, split into separate parts which may be in conflict. Your particular mental structures consisting of your personal opinions and concepts is the result of many factors including your genetic makeup, parental upbringing, social and cultural environments and the way you have perceived, internalized and acted on your experiences. These mental structures develop and change throughout your life. The world as you see it is largely a reflection of your mental history. What you think is an original creation of your mind.

- The way things really are:

Reality, the world as it is, is neither inherently split (dualistic), nor unified, neither structured nor unstructured. It just is. This is so simple that most people do not understand it.

- Ending stress

It is enough to grasp deeply how things really work. The past has gone, is unalterable, the future is non-existent except as your present expectations, and “now” is already here. Within this realization, true rest occurs naturally. This is non-meditation, natural meditation or “resting in natural awareness” as Longchen Rabjam, the renowned Tibetan yogi and Dzogchen meditation master, put it.

By recognizing the nature of reality you are able to live, love and benefit yourself and others more easily, as you no longer experience the frustration of trying to grasp at imagined parts of your experience or trying to remove them.

About the Author
Jonathan Harrison was born in Manchester, England. Following completion of degrees in physics and mathematics at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland he moved to Israel where he has lived since 1969. In 1997, during a successful career in defense computer engineering and hi tech management he developed a strong interest in western and eastern psychotherapy and in particular Buddhist and nondual methods. He spent several years in meditation, study and practice including a personal retreat at the Tibetan Dzogchen Monastery in southern India. He currently teaches worldwide and writes on nondual wisdom, meditation and mental therapy inspired by masters of traditions including Dzogchen, Mahamudra, Zen, Mahayana, Advaita and Tao. The Hebrew edition of his first book "Know Reality. Find Peace." featured on Israel best seller lists for seven weeks. It is now available in English on Amazon Kindle. Jonathan Harrison writes a regular weekly blog on nondual meditation and the elimination of mental stress. He is married with three children and seven grandchildren.

Controlling your stress, anger, fear as well as worry has never been more enlightening.

Truly an astounding book that will captivate the heart, mind and spirit and embark you on a journey through time. The end result will leave you breathless in a better state of being that will enlighten your senses to a level that few are able to travel.

Due to a series of unfortunate events in my life, I had to look for alternatives that could help me become a better person. My solution was meditation. While I am no expert in the field of meditation, having only read about three books on the subject, I have and can say that I have improved my state of being and have found myself more in touch with the world around me.

Looking for a way to grow both in knowledge and improve my meditation techniques I began searching for another book to broaden my horizons. That is when I stumbled across “Know Reality. A practical guide to meditation and therapy through nondual and buddhist wisdom traditions.” By Author Jonathan Harrison.

This book has it all, in a comprehensive, easy to follow manner that is not for the feint of heart. Everything from "Stress and its elimination” to “Overcoming anxiety, hope and fear” is discussed and addressed in this book. It is literally a step-by-step walk through on how to get a handle on the world around you and above all yourself. Dzogchen, Mahamudra, Zen, Madhyamika, Advaita and Tao techniques are all applied to combine a fantastic book that I know will stand the test of time.

Know Reality, Find Peace. Is that possible? I wasn't sure it was, so I had to buy the book to find out. I've been wanting to do some type of meditation for a while now, I just really was not sure where to even begin to start.

This book is absolutely fantastic, and I already feel like I'm getting a good grasp on the techniques. The author has written a clear and concise book to help us learn to deal with the stress we all face in our daily lives in a very doable and practical manner.

The writing is very good and more importantly, easy to follow and understand. If you are interesting in learning meditation skills, this is definitely the book you want to pick up.
