About the Author
Dan Pilone is a Software Architect with SFA, Inc., cofounder and president of Zizworks, Inc. and a terrible rock climber. He has designed and implemented systems for Hughes, ARINC, UPS, and the Naval Research Laboratory. When not writing for O'Reilly, he teaches Software Design and Software Engineering at The Catholic University in Washington DC. Originally writing in C and C++, he has moved into the blissful world of managed code with Java and C#. He has had several articles published by Intelligent Enterprise and Java Developer's Journal on software process, consulting in the software industry, and 3D graphics in Java.

diagrams are faulty

An important aspect of UML diagrams is dashed vs solid lines. The text clearly describes and differentiates between the two, but in the example diagrams it is not possible to distinguish between dashed and dotted lines - they look the same, so either the diagrams are wrong, or they're pixelated to the point of uselessness. Because the diagrams are critical to the content, I think this makes the book unforgivably flawed.

Pages were falling out of the binding

Um, yeah...this really shouldn't have been sold. When I opened up the (tiny) book, which was about the size of my hand, the pages came unstuck from the glued binding. This should have seriously been tossed into the recycling bin, not sold. The book was in crappy condition. I can't even read it because I get stressed out trying to keep the pages from falling all over the place.

Good reference, but not for learning UML

This book is a convenient reference for UML, but I would not recommend using it to try to learn UML (and it's not marketed as a textbook). In general, given the book's small size, examples are very simple and really serve only as reminders.
