He finds inadequate the theory of action implied by utilitarianism, and he argues that utilitarianism fails to engage at a serious level with the real problems of moral and political philosophy, and fails to make sense of notions such as integrity, or even human happiness itself. Both authors are agreed on utilitarianism's importance: it cuts across a number of different philosophical disputes and combines a systematic account of mata-ethical problems with a distinctive and substantive moral stand. It thus is, or involves, philosophy in both the traditional and the narrower, professional sense of the word, and is a key topic (often the first topic) in introductory philosophy courses. This book should also be of interest to welfare economists, political scientists and decision-theorists.

Terrific Starting Point

This terrific little book was my introduction to ethical philosophy in college. This is, in fact, the best way to introduce anyone to real philosophy: Present an important philosophical problem and let two very intelligent, articulate, and well-educated people of opposing views & good faith argue the merits, demerits, and difficulties inherent in a particular theory. In fairly clear and straightforward prose, Smart and Williams plunge right into the matter and hash it out with meticulous care. Smart offers a sophisticated version of Utilitarianism for our consideration. Williams draws out the implications of it and shows how Utilitarian ethics contains contradictions and potentially repellent outcomes. (Although Williams never makes it explicit in this book, he adheres to a sophisticated modern version of classical virtue ethics, a sort of refined Nicomachean ethics.)
This may not be the last word on Utilitarianism, but it is certainly one of the most intelligent and insightful. A perfect entree to ethical philosophy, that endlessly fascinating & vitally important dialogue about how we ought to live our lives.

The reviewer from Berkley could not be more right in recommending this book as an introduction to modern moral philosophy. Smart and Williams are two of the most brilliant and important philosophers of the last century and both are brilliantly clear and engaging communicators. The result is not just good introduction but a book that takes you right to the cutting edge of the subject. Smart contributes a splendidly bold and clear headed statement and defence of a form of act utilitarianism (`the view that the rightness or wrongness of an action depends only on the total goodness or badness of its consequences, i.e. on the effect of the action on the welfare of all human beings (or perhaps all sentient beings)'). Williams then provides a peerlessly brilliant and devastating critique of that same theory. The reader is left with a clear understanding both of why so many people as sensible and intelligent as Smart consider utilitarianism just obviously right and why so many people as humane and thoughtful as Williams think it is just crazy. If you are interested in philosophy, then, it's a wonderfully rewarding read. Indeed it's a great thing to read if you aren't sure whether you re interested in philosophy or not. If you find Williams on consequentialism, integrity and negative responsibility a dull read you will probably find pretty well any philosophy dull and you can safely conclude that the subject is not for you.

Ive read a lot of books on Utilitarian Ethics, and this, with out a doubt the best! Smart is concice and cercumspect in his presentation of what has become the most plausible and appliable form of consequentialism, i.e. Utilitarianism.
Williams presents extreemly perseptive critiques of Utilitarianism in perticuler, and consequentialism in general. Unfortunately for Williams it seems to me after 16 years of Ethical study, that Utilitarianism, as tough a theory as it is, is the most viable that has yet been discoverd. R.A.M. 3-15-00

Nice pair of rewarding content books. Seems a lot for the money. Dated 2015. Covers high value topics well. Studied 50 hours with it so far. Some items I wanted to look up were absent in the index, as expected. Same can be said for anything most likely, for instance Harrison's IM 18e - which I love. I think if you like Harrison you'll like this. I rather expected a CD with it but there isn't one. Disclosure: I don't know other cardiology series to properly compare and am not a cardiologist.

Braunwald is Braunwald. I don't need to review the book because it is the leading authority from which all cardiologists get their education after training. Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention and forgot that it comes as a set of 2 books or as 1 big textbook which I always prefer. Not their fault though. Anyway, if you are in the medical field and want to have "the cardiology bible", look no further because this is it and has always been, period. I suppose the better way to sell this book through Amazon is to click on the book and force you to choose between the two versions.

About the Author
Krishna K. Havaldar is a Professor at the School of Business, Alliance University Bangalore. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad and a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Pune. Prof. Havaldar has been a member of All India Management Association and has also served as the Dean at the Xavier Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship (XIME), Bangalore, and as the Principal at the RJS Institute of Management Studies, Bangalore. rior to his career in academia, Prof. Havaldar worked in the companies such as Blue Star Ltd, Crompton Greaves Ltd and Kirloskar Consultants for more than three decades in various capacities—starting from service engineer, area sales manager, regional marketing manager to marketing manager, general manager and vice-president. He has a number of publications and case studies to his credit and has also authored Business Marketing: Text & Cases, which is now in its third edition. Prof. Havaldar devotes his leisure time to yoga and meditation and prefers spending quality time with his family. Cricket is his another leisure interest. He had indeed played Ranji Trophy Tournament for Maharashtra. VM Cavale is a management consultant and has been teaching marketing and supply chain management at some of the leading business schools in India and abroad as a guest faculty. A graduate in mechanical engineering, he also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad. Vasant Cavale worked for almost three decades in the marketing, sales, distribution and logistics departments of the Unilever Group at senior levels both in India & abroad. He then worked in KPMG Management Consulting for three years as a Principal Consultant, Operations, where he facilitated setting up the supply chain management practice. He has handled a number of consulting assignments in various industry verticals in marketing, sales, distribution, SCM, performance improvement, cost reduction and people management in India and abroad. About the Author
Rob Jenkins is a professor of ESL and the Faculty Development Coordinator serving over 300 instructors teaching for Santa Ana College School of Continuing Education in California. He is a recipient of the Santa Ana College Distinguished Faculty Award. Rob is also a textbook author and consultant for National Geographic Learning. He is the author of Stand Out and series editor for World English, and also consults on state and national projects. I love to travel and every place I go, the first thing I want to do is meet the people, learn their language, and understand their culture. Excellent for the history - fashions and patterns. Mother won't give it back so I'll have to order another soon. The patterns and decorative design graphics are very well done. The Photographs are so clear and beautiful. It's a wonderful book.

If I have any complaints it would be I wish that it covered 20 years of fashion starting with 1854.

A French Fashion Doll's Wardrobe

I ordered this book as I waited for a 12" Alice Leverett French Fashion doll. I looked at the book so many times as I waited for the doll. Now I have actually used the patterns and they and the instructions are wonderful. The 12" patterns fit my A. L. doll perfectly but both the 12" and 18" patterns (both sizes are included!) are also meant for the wonderful antique French Fashion dolls and instructions for altering are clear too.

Bailyn, prize-winning Harvard historian (Pulitzer, Bancroft, National Book Award), is writing a multivolume interpretive history of the transatlantic movement of people from Europe to America between 1500 and the Industrial Revolution. Peopling of British North America: An Introduction.
Surely one of the most important studies of the vast movement of immigrants to the New World is Bernard Bailyn's The Peopling of British North America: An Introduction. In a nuanced thesis regarding the motivations for promoting movement of large numbers of people to the American wilderness, he also shows how long-held traditions with regard to land ownership and tenantry were transformed in America, due largely to the new environment. Bailyn argues that after the "initial phase of colonization, the major stimuli to population recruitment and settlement were...the continuing need for labor, and...land speculation." The land speculation of the 17th and 18th centuries, Bailyn argues, "shaped a relationship between the [land] owners and the workers of the land different from that which prevailed in Europe." (60) Bailyn writes that land speculation was common in America among all classes of men, "a major preoccupation of ambitious people...launched as a universal business." (67) But with all of this pervasive land accumulation came an indispensable caveat; speculators needed settlers to populate the land they claimed, so that an owner could rent or sell his property. "Land speculation was, and remained, boundless, ubiquitous," (74) writes Bailyn, who goes on to describe the various schemes and methods speculators used "to people the land they claimed." (69) Yet as Bailyn points also out, long-held, customary tenancy relationships that British landowners were used to were not adaptable to America. Instead, new methods were needed to attract settlers and clear the land, so that property in the trackless wilderness would become useable, and as a result, valuable. Bailyn argues that, unlike tenancy norms in Britain or Ireland, speculators had to let the land out at very low rates (or none at all) in an attempt to attract settlers who would in turn make improvements on the property themselves, with their own labor. "The land would have a new value and could then be rented profitably or sold...all of this with little or no outlay of funds." (82) This innovative model was quite attractive to migrants, Bailyn concludes, who were free to chose upon which speculator's land to settle, and which lands to avoid. In America, gone were the services tenants typically performed in the old country, rent increases and the caprice of landlords. Bailyn goes on to suggest as well that unlike property limitations in Britain, land in the colonies was "too easily available" and mobility too common among settlers for tenancy to develop permanently, or to "make possible a re-creation of the stable pattern of rentiers that lay at the heart of a traditional landed society." New tenancy and ownership patterns "reveal a new and dynamic process that was a central force in the peopling of America." (84-85)

Brief Introduction to Promising "Voyagers to the West"

This is a brief introduction to Bailyn's highly regarded "Voyagers to the West". The book is, as it states, a serious of transcribed lectures that Bailyn delivered to college undergrads. You can tell that these are lectures, but Bailyn has provided ample footnoting at the back of the book.

Understand that this is a short book. It should only take about a couple of hours (maybe less) to read. "Voyagers to the West" runs about 800 pgs, so you'd probably want to read this before that, just to make sure this is what you are interested in.

Bailyn uses four "propositions" to frame the themes of his lectures. The propositions boil down to the idea that the received wisdom we have about the peopling of the British colonies in America is wrong and that the process was more complex then we thought. I would refer those unfamiliar with this approach (that of framing "propostions" for historical inquiry), to the work of the Annales school in France (Marc Bloch, Phillipe Aries, etc).

Fans of David Hackett Fischer's "Albion's Seed" will want to check this one out.

an elegant little classic

It's unusual for an academic history book to be spellbinding, but this one is. Bailyn's slim, elegant volume contains three lectures (originally given at the University of Wisconsin and in other venues) on immigration and demography in early America. Bailyn argues that immigration from Europe to North America is best understood as an extension of the pre-existing patterns of local and long-distance migration within medieval and early modern Europe. In the final lecture, "A Domesday Book for the Periphery," Bailyn further argues that the diverse and disorderly culture of early America is best understood as a "marchland" (112) of European civilization. The lectures are studded with intriguing data and specific, moving examples. If you want to do in-depth research on this topic, you will need to read Bailyn's longer work, Voyagers to the West, but the ample footnotes in this volume will be enough to get you started on further reading. Truly a classic in the field.
