A fine, gripping war novel

"Battle Cry" was Leon Uris's first novel and it's by far his best. Set right after Pearl Harbor, it's the story of the Marines in the Second World War and of one squad of Marines in particular, led by (and narrated by) Mac, a crusty old sergeant who has seen generations of boys pass through his command.

The story moves quickly through basic training to combat, and comes to a shattering climax with an all-out battle against the Japanese forces in the Pacific. As much as the story Uris tells so compellingly, we are held by his characters: Danny Forrester, the all-American boy; Andy the Swede, hating women indiscriminately until he meets the woman of his dreams far from home; Levin from Brooklyn, who knew what he had to do, and did it magnificently; Shining Lighttower, the Navajo, who really didn't want to go back to the reservation after all, and Sam Huxley, their colonel, who wanted glory for himself and his boys at any price, even if the price included all their lives.

Technically, Uris isn't a very good writer, but he is one helluva storyteller, and one of his greatest strengths is in plain dialogue between his characters, which shows up to much better advantage here than it did in his later books. It's in the dialogue that his characters come vibrantly alive; we understand how a disparate bunch of 18 and 19 year olds, kids like anybody else, can throw their lives away in battle rather than face the possibility of a defeat which would be worse than death. Uris shows us through his characters the men who made the Marines what they are.

Leon Uris' "Battle Cry"

An outstanding piece of WWII historical fiction. Unlike other great works of this genre' (Herman Wouk's "War and Remembrance" for instance), this tale is not told from the perspective of the colonels and generals, but rather as experienced by the U.S. Marine sergeants and privates.

The tale thoroughly and patiently follows a group of young men from the train stations where they left their hometowns, through boot camp and training, and onto the beaches of Guadalcanal and Tarawa atoll where they fell in combat. Uris did not all neglect the issue of back home wives and girlfriends, who are so very important to men isolated so far from home.

His first novel, Uris wrote this from his own experience. He was a WWII enlisted Marine combat veteran in the Pacific. First published in 1953, this book was written while memories were still fresh. In a way, it's a bit dated, with terminology and (superior) social values from an America of yesterday. On the other hand, Marine and Navy veterans will recognize the jargon and behaviors that are still in use today. Tradition.

A reviewer has criticized the slow opening pace. I disagree. The device was used to well acquaint the reader with and help him/her to grow to know and love the players, just as these Marines loved their "buddies".

I noted in the author's epilogue that he strongly and repeatedly disclaimed any connection of the fictional officers in his story (he even names them) to any real life personalities he had served under. Glaringly absent was a similar disclaimer regarding the enlisted men in his story. I infer from this that many of the colorful enlisted characters of the book might be representations of Pfc Uris' actual wartime colleagues. A memorial to them, if you will. Interesting.

Uris used an unusual and successful style technique in "Battle Cry". The tale is sometimes written in third person narrative, and at other times narrated in first person by a veteran sergeant in the battalion named Mac. But it's really about the teenage boys that did most of the fighting . . . sometimes hand to hand. Again, Uris was not in a hurry and patiently let the story play out. At times it is slow and monotonous, as was the wartime Marine life. At other times the action is overwhelming. Writing realistically from life experience, the battle scenes are not an organized test of marksmanship between two opposing teams . . . the fighting is chaos. This is the kind of book that provokes the reader to alternately laughing out loud, cheering, or weeping.

This is not a cheap blood and guts war story. It's a great tale of courage, leadership, brotherhood and humanity - Well told.

Great Book with the Comic Book Title

At first, I thought a book called "Battle Cry" might be fairly reminiscent of the comic strip, "Sgt. Rock and His Howling Commandos of Easy." In that, I was disappointed, which means I was very relieved.

This book is a surprisingly good war story of the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine (Pogey Bait) Regiment. From the call to arms to their decimation on a Pacific Island invasion, you learn about the backgrounds of several of the marines in the Communications section of their battalion.

Uris demonstrates the knack for bringing characters to life where you feel their fears, hopes, dreams, and in this case, their intense esprit de corps.

I have a few qualifications for giving a five-star rating:

Do I still have the book?
Yes.
Would I ever pick it up, and read it again?
Yes.
Was I sorry that I came to the end of the book?
Yes.

I have only read two of Uris' books; I'm glad that this was one of them.

Older edition but good enough to be used as reference

This has little bit old information but good enough for learning it for first time use. It's got good illustration and information that's useful like how a human sexual organ, step-by-step arouses and engorges with blood on both genders, and shows which parts are called what and how it changes during sexual arousal. And body parts change position even in anticipation of seminal fluids from male ejaculation. That's all interesting and it further goes into the political and socialization.

When Ian watches a documentary about the health concerns of eating fast food, he decides to try and stop people from eating at Frankie's, a fast-food chain with a questionable menu. The boycott takes off and the company's lawyers try and force him to stop. Can Ian stand up for what he believes in? Can he take on a big corporation and win? Stuffed is Eric Walter's fourth title in the Orca Soundings Series, following Grind, Overdrive and Juice. Eric lives in Mississauga, Ontario.

The story plot within itself was good

Stuffed is about three teenagers who watched a movie about the dangers of fast food, particularly a place named Frankie's (Super size me, anyone?). While at first the main character, Ian, doesn't take to the idea of giving up his fries, his friend Julia jumps right into the idea of fasting from fast food, and her doormat boyfriend and Ian's best friend, Oswald, agrees with her (although we all know he's craving a double cheeseburger). But after Ian decides that he could incorporate the anti-Frankie's buzz with his mass communication project in computer science, he writes a letter begging people not to eat at Frankie's on Friday the 13th. He sends this message to forty of his friends (via MSN) and asks them to send the message to forty of their friends.

By the next day, the message has crossed the Atlantic Ocean and is all over America. When Ian gets home, he has more than 600 emails, mostly in support of his project. But one of those emails was definitely not supportive. It was from Frankie's lawyers, telling him that if he continued to spread the message, he would be sued. But the lawyers didn't know something--Ian's parents are lawyers too. They schedule a meeting, and Frankie's suggests a bribe: If Ian calls off the boycott, Frankie's will supply a free lunch to everyone at his school on Friday the 13th. Ian and Julia can't believe their ears, and say they will decide later. This splits the school in half...and the drama continues. The story ends with unsurprising results and an unlikely, but expected romance.

The story plot within itself was good, but the beginning was hard to get through and the middle seemed incomplete, although I must say, the lawyer humor was pretty funny. I would recommend "Stuffed" to kids beginning middle school, and is a great way to show kids that one person can make a difference.

Good, but not great

These kids watched a movie on the dangers of fast food in health class and people responded to it and a girl said she will never eat there again so Ian sent out a email trying to get people to stop eating at Frankie's. Just like my title, I must say Stuffed was pretty good, but not great. The whole point of the book was about boycotting a restaurant. I just wish it were more exciting. The best part of the book was probably when Ian sent out the e-mail that over seven hundred people responded to. So to quickly summarize this book basically Ian's class watches a documentary on the dangers of fast food so Ian decided to boycott a restaurant called Frankie's, so he sends an email about it and he gets over seven hundred responses.

The lawyers of Frankie's restaurant got concerned when they first heard of the boycott.The lawyers threaten Ian and his friend to stop the boycott.Ian has to convince his friends that the boycott is a good idea. Ian's parents are lawyers and Frankie said that if he spread the message he would be sued.Frankie's doesn't know that they set up a meeting and suggest a bribe for free lunch for him and everyone at school.I do not recommend this book it is boring and mediocre.

Pretty good book

The book Stuffed by Eric Walters is pretty good and it is interesting because of the conflict between characters, the message, and the whole topic of the book in general. The conflict between characters is funny because there's a trio of friends, 2 boys and a girl, and the girl and one of the boys start dating and it turns out to be that the boy is pretty whipped by his girlfriend. Also the message because it's saying that humans shouldn't eat at fast food restaurants every day of the week, and it shows how unhealthy their foods are and what they do to people. The whole topic is good because the idea of everyone in the world bonding together over something that one child did and not eating at a unhealthy restaurant for a day. Anyone could read this book because It's not really directed towards any certain age group. Any age group could understand this book and get involved in it!

Beautiful (but not what's advertised)

Okay, so this arrived at my doorstep and wasn't what I expected. It's NOT the graphic novel that apparently preceded the film, as described by Amazon's blurb. Instead it's a lovely book of images from the film, and a copy of the film's script. Now I need to order the actual graphic novel, but I'm really glad I have this too! It's just the coffee table art book I've been waiting for, and a great reminder of the film's visual beauty.

(By the way, the same reviews are appearing under both books. I don't know what that's all about. I'm going to try ordering the graphic novel and hope I receive the right thing!)

Not what I expected, but I liked what I got...

Having originally missed The Fountain when it made its short theatrical presentation, I finally got a chance to see it, and after which I was compelled to do two things:

1.) Upgrade to the Blu-ray version, as this was a movie that deserved to be watched in the highest definition possible - not only is the story compelling but the cinematography is beautiful.

2.) Read the graphic novel that Aronofsky had adapted his screenplay into after his initial effort to get the movie made fell through.

Having said this you might be wondering why I'm writing a review for this item, as getting a 'picture book' wasn't part of one of those two things I was compelled to do. The answer to this question is, after briefly reading through the product description it was my understanding that this was a hardbound rerelease of the graphic novel to complement the movie. It was my surprise then, when I got my brown box from Amazon and removed the shrink wrapping from the contents within, that I found not a graphic novel but a book filled with stills from the movie. Initially I was distraught, as I had just paid $20 for the wrong book, and my first instinct was to return the item.

Having settled down a bit, I decided to give the book a chance and slowly thumbed through it. From the first few pages I found myself drawn into the artistically render adaptations of stills from the movie. The photographs in this book do a wonderful job of visually representing the thematic elements of the movie, and are simply gorgeous to look at. Never having seen this movie, one could pick up this book and find sunken into every page pictorial representations of the emotional context that made The Fountain so wonderfully appealing.

It was also my great surprise to find embedded in the back cover of this book a copy of the screenplay from the movie. Flipping through the screenplay was exciting, as it allowed me to see the manuscript from which the movie was born. Toward the end of the screenplay there is also a nice summation by Aronofsky about the thematic elements of the movie, and how they relate to the journey in which the protagonist undergoes. This would definitely be a book you would set on the coffee table when you invite friends over to watch The Fountain. While not a necessary addition, a nice addition nonetheless for fans of the movie.

But on opening day, his teacher recognizes his problem--tipped off by the boy's reversing letters when writing his name--and conducts a battery of tests. Results indicate that, despite a keen intellect, Brian has dyslexia. A meeting with Brian's (heretofore unaware) parents leads to a support program at home and at school. Betancourt ( More Than Meets the Eye ) "brings her own experience with dyslexia to Brian's story," though it seems unlikely that a child in a modern-day urban environment would reach sixth grade without having been diagnosed. (The boy's father and grandfather are similarly afflicted.) A superfluous subplot concerns the point system Brian and his friends devise for clowning in school; lengthy passages about Canada geese further slow the pace. Grade 4-6-- Brian and his fellow members of the Jokers Club hate school. To make it more fun, they create a secret game, winning points for making other people laugh during the day. Brian wins the first point when he writes his name as "Brain" on the blackboard. But it's no joke. He is dyslexic. Betancourt weaves in a good deal of information on this learning disability, but first and foremost, this is a story. Brian, who narrates, is characterized by more than his problem. Not only must he practice new ways to learn, but he must also deal with his father, also dyslexic; with a childhood friend whose behavior becomes increasingly disturbing; and with a girl he hates. As readers follow him through the sixth grade and see the changes it makes in his life, he becomes a real person to them. They will close the book with a sigh of satisfaction. It is written clearly and simply, with an obvious understanding of, and empathy for, Brian. That this is a good story balances three problems readers might have with the book: the chapter titles are confusing, some sections that focus specifically on dyslexia might be boring, and Brian's handwriting, which appears throughout, is hard to read. Children with learning problems will relate well to this book; as a presentation of that issue, it's outstanding. --Constance A. Brian starts school hoping to do better this year, only to mess up by misspelling his own name the first day. Fortunately, his no-nonsense sixth-grade teacher is different from last year's pushover: not only does he spot Brian's previously undiagnosed dyslexia and arrange for an effective educational plan, but he's obviously an unsuitable butt for the pranks Brian and his three pals have projected for their ``Jokers' Club'' competition. Betancourt's profile of Brian's family is prototypical, if mostly plausible: his ``learning difference'' is in its third generation, but unsympathetic Dad (a carpenter) persists in thinking that Brian simply doesn't work hard enough. Meanwhile, the unusually intelligent Brian is lucky enough to be offered a fine combination of tutoring and mainstreaming with a gifted and resourceful teacher. He gets through the opprobrium associated with his new status with relative ease, begins to build on his real interests with a class project, and--in some pleasantly suspenseful exchanges--gets the better of his two less savory friends and comes to appreciate the third, plus an erstwhile enemy. Packaged with earnest intent and a somewhat pat outcome, but still a skillfully structured, entertaining story; Brian himself, struggling to redefine himself in terms of his newly discovered potential, is drawn with real insight. Brain learns differently

The book tells a story about a boy named Brian who has dyslexia but does not know it. The other children at Brian's school make fun of him because he makes many mistakes when reading aloud and while writing on the board. He thinks of himself as being dumb. His parents believe that he is just lazy. It turns out that caring teacher recognizes that he is neither. The teacher recognizes the symptoms of dyslexia and sets out to get Brian the help he needs. Brian is embarrassed that he needs the extra help in school. After Brian's teacher begins to explain dyslexia more to him, he begins to understand that he needs the extra help not because he is dumb, but because his brain learns differently. The story offers hope; Brian is really smart he just learns differently. I strongly recommend this as a book to be shared by parents and their children

Great book for learning disabled students

I bought this book to read to my own son in second grade who was diagnosed with dyslexia and who hates school because it is so difficult to him. I teach sixth grade special ed kids and I read the book to them, a chapter a day. They would beg me to read it to them instead of teaching the class! They related to it and inspired them.

I read this book to my seven-year-old son, who has recently been diagnosed with dyslexia, and he really felt that the writer understood the feelings that he has about school. Brian is embarrassed that he needs extra help in school. He's wants to do well in school and he wants to be cool. The story offers hope; Brian is really smart he just learns differently. I strongly recommend this as a book to be shared by parents and their children.

About the Author
Dr. Braja Das is Dean Emeritus of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at California State University, Sacramento. He received his M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Iowa and his Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin. He is the author of a number of geotechnical engineering texts and reference books and more than 250 technical papers in the area of geotechnical engineering. His primary areas of research include shallow foundations, earth anchors, and geosynthetics. Dr. Das is a Fellow and Life Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Life Member of the American Society for Engineering Education, and an Emeritus Member of the Chemical and Mechanical Stabilization Committee of the Transportation Research Board of the National Research Council (Washington D.C.). He has received numerous awards for teaching excellence, including the AMOCO Foundation Award, the AT&T Award for Teaching Excellence from the American Society for Engineering Education, the Ralph Teetor Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the Distinguished Achievement Award for Teaching Excellence from the University of Texas at El Paso.

I recommend saving your money and stick with the 7th edition

The book came as advertised. No issues with seller, or delivery. However, this author is clearly just out to make money. There are several mistakes in this edition, that were not in the first edition. Answers in the back of the book are often incorrect, and several examples clearly evaluate to the wrong numerical value. I recommend saving your money and stick with the 7th edition.

The best book of Foundations

this book is really great and it helps a lot when doing all high grades in this fields. I liked the previous edition but I also want to be updated so I just bought this wonderful book
