Bugs for All

Non-specialists please beware: You may find this book extremely interesting. Let's see: there's the Bristletails, who have the MOST UNIQUE REPRODUCTION METHOD IN THE ANIMAL KINGDOM, Bugs in Movies, where you will learn that JIMINY CRICKET is "MORE LIKE A DAPPER ELF" THAN ANY BUG KNOWN, about how CHEMICALS IN THE CUTICLE (a good name for a band) are generally SPECIES-SPECIFIC, about how MOST COCKROACH SPECIES are NOT HARMFUL to humans, and so on and on. With the glossary and photos and drawings, you can follow a lot of things. Beware of TECHNICAL TERMS, YOU MAY HAVE TO LEARN THEM! The items and actions identified by each specific term add up to a compendium of "WOW-NESS": each evolved insect turns out a complicated and beautiful creature. This is a record of human endeavour at its best, and of Life on Planet Earth at its most rich and amazing. (And entomologists never use ANNOYING CAPITAL LETTER STRINGS.)

Very technical. More photos would be helpful.

My husband was pleased to receive this book for Christmas. He has enjoyed reading less technical books on insects in the past.
I was initially disappointed because there are very few color photographs in the book. Other than that, it is very thorough and my husband has the background to understand and appreciate the information presented.
It is a very large, heavy book and not at all practical as a field guide.
