I don't think I'm at all in the target audience for this book

The answer to the titular question seems to me a fairly obvious no. Now that that's out of the way, I'll turn to the inside of the book. As I write this, it is 2016, and much of what Goldberg discusses (events in Ferguson, Missouri, e.g.) seems to have a limited shelf life. I can't imagine that the arguments, such as they are in here, will have as much direct relevance in a few years. The core issues will, I suspect, but much of the focus of the book, not surprisingly, is on current events that will fade from memory or be replaced before long.

The writing is interesting. At times, it is clear, but at other times, it exhibits unmistakable shades of academic excess. For example, there are sentences like "Postraciality amounts to a general social ecology within which race and racisms are supposedly outmoded but where, in fact, racist expression has gone viral" that may not be as concise as they could be but are reasonably clear. And then there are sentences like "Dissolution of modern subjectivity, emblematic in the microbic molecules of dust, as Dick (1954/1992) so vividly conveys, is exacerbated in the late modern proliferation of geographies of walking."

I found interesting points and arguments in this essay, but ultimately, I thought that it's more for academics than for people like me. I don't state that as a criticism. I make that point as an observation. I certainly don't think that there must be a divide between academic writing and general audience (and would cite Foucault as an example), but there almost certainly is one here.

Waffling and posturing, and precious little actual analysis or argument.

I hoped that someone who disliked this book less would review it before I had to. No such luck.

The topic (or family of related topics) is very important, and of both academic and popular interest. And the book is short, so one might reasonably have hoped that the author would quickly do some frame-setting, and present exposition, analysis, and argument that were clear and accessible.

Again, no such luck. What the book in fact contains is an inordinate amount of waffling and posturing, and virtually no analysis and explanation. To make things worse (if such a thing is possible) the author repeatedly lays claim to having presented arguments that.....simply were not there.

I hate to post reviews of books that I thought had virtually nothing going for them, and avoid doing it. But requesting and receiving the ARC through the Vine program obliges me to file a review. Sadly, apart from acknowledging the importance of the topic, I cannot recommend this little book.

Well presented

It seems to me that the answer to the question of "Are We All Postracial Yet?" is fairly obvious, but a gut feeling based on observation is one thing and reading it from someone who actually studies and researches such things is different. That is why I selected David Theo Goldberg's "Are We all Postracial Yet?" to read. Goldberg covers a lot in this under-200 pages book. He covers the past, conditions, logistics, etc before entering the last chapter which addresses the title question. The "answer" wasn't a spoiler and I did feel that he gave a solid and understandable presentation of how he arrived at it.

Major work of criticism by Matthew Arnold, published in 1869. In it Arnold contrasts culture, which he defines as "the study of perfection," with anarchy, the prevalent mood of England's then new democracy, which lacks standards and a sense of direction. Arnold classified English society into the Barbarians (with their lofty spirit, serenity, and distinguished manners and their inaccessibility to ideas), the Philistines (the stronghold of religious nonconformity, with plenty of energy and morality but insufficient "sweetness and light"), and the Populace (still raw and blind). He saw in the Philistines the key to culture; they were the most influential segment of society; their strength was the nation's strength, their crudeness its crudeness; it therefore was necessary to educate and humanize the Philistines. Arnold saw in the idea of "the State," and not in any one class of society, the true organ and repository of the nation's collective "best self." No summary can do justice to Culture and Anarchy, however; it is written with an inward poise, a serene detachment, and an infusion of subtle humor that make it a masterpiece of ridicule as well as a searching analysis of Victorian society. For anyone hoping to grasp the roots of modern conservatism

Matthew Arnold, a British poet and critic, wrote on the importance of culture in this work. He defined culture, famously, as "sweetness and light" - implying that culture represented everything good, everything not barbaric. The work is most important for the way it forwards the notion of an "organic" society - that is, a society that evolves slowly, that grows into maturity, that does not strive for sudden "advances" led by experts working all at once to implement great change. For anyone wondering about the relationship between modern conservatism and classical Liberalism, this is a decent place to start. "I am a Liberal," Arnold writes in the introduction, "yet I am a Liberal tempered by experience, reflection, and renouncement, and I am, above all, a believer in culture." If you wish to take an intellectual journey from Burke to Bork, Arnold must make up one leg of your trip.

Witty, ironic, and irrepressible classic

This was probably Arnold's greatest work, and it can still be read with profit today. Mainly a reaction to the social and cultural uncertainties of mid-Victorian England, Arnold attempted to analyze and solve the problem of anarchy and cultural uncertainty as he saw it in this witty and articulate collection of essays. The U.S. is in a similar uncertain state today, but unfortunately we're more likely to see more false pundits pandering nonsense rather than another Matthew Arnold, whose intelligence, wit, and uncommon sense seem to be all too rare today in this country. As the Encyclopedia Britannica puts it, "Arnold saw in the idea of "the State," and not in any one class of society, the true organ and repository of the nation's collective "best self." No summary can do justice to this extraordinary book; it can still be read with pure enjoyment, for it is written with an inward poise, a serene detachment, and an infusion of mental laughter, which make it a masterpiece of ridicule as well as a searching analysis of Victorian society. The same is true of its unduly neglected sequel, Friendship's Garland (1871)."

A Breeze of Sanity

So much of modern criticism has go so far afield, that the appellation has almost lost any sense to it. To recapture what criticism meant before the novel, but useless ideas of structuralism, post-structuralism, deconstruction, post-modernism, et alia, Matthew Arnold is about as good a place to begin. His "Function of Criticism" and "Anarchy and Crticism" have become classics, even if they've been hidden from sight by academicians' self-serving agendas to bring nothing to light. This isn't a "conservative" vs. "liberal" thing, but an "intelligible and meaningful" vs. "labyrinthine and cockamamie" thing. Arnold is like encountering hermeneutics by having first visited Thomas Aquinas, or having studied democracy by having first studied Hobbes. Arnold is a seminal thinker, crtic, and student of the arts and society. He belongs in criticism's lexicon well before de Saussure, Derrida, Lacan, at alia.

Fascinating and beautifully researched

An intricately researched and beautifully illustrated book, And did those feet by Michael Goldsworthy takes as it's driving force the poet William Blake's words, made famous in Parry's anthem Jerusalem. Did Jesus' feet indeed walk on England's green and pleasant land? And if he did once dwell here, what might he have left behind to be found in the future?

The author, in his own words, "attempts to elucidate the relationships between certain established fabricated commonly held beliefs," tying together ley lines, Arthurian legend, Biblical prophecy and even the Turin Shroud--plus the English Christmas carol "I saw three ships" which I always used to wonder about. His statistical and geometrical analyses leave me wanting more detail, but that probably says more about my background than the author's book. Ancient documents are transcribed, transliterated and translated in extraordinary detail, and any reader curious about how truth turns into myth and legend should find a wealth of understanding here. Authors in search of material for the next Da Vinci Code should be delighted by this author's carefully analyzed and well-presented research. And curious seekers of the Holy Grail, following the footsteps of saints and angels, will find much to enjoy.

Proposing intriguing answers to such questions as "What is the Grail and who does it serve?" or "What is Time?", bringing together Joseph of Arimathea, the history of tin-mining in Devon and Cornwall, and the angles of Egyptian pyramids, including a fascinating analysis of the science and archeology behind the Turin Shroud, and showing an honest willingness to reject as myth that which can't withstand his research, the author provides invaluable insights into the way arguments are developed and critiqued, and the way historical truth can be sought for and discovered.

I particularly enjoyed the tin-mining research, the analysis of translation and mistranslation of documents, and the insights into medieval church politics (worthy of Pillars of the Earth). The language is sometimes odd with complex sentence structures complementing complex analysis, and the book is a slow heavy read. But the illustrations are beautifully chosen and presented, and the text provides a great resource for ideas, even for readers who might end up disagreeing with the author's conclusions.

I'd love to see the print version of this book with its sumptuous images, but, for the sake of price, I probably recommend the e-version. Even on my elderly kindle the pictures were all pretty clear.

Disclosure: I received an ecopy from the author and promised an honest review. I'm just sorry it took so long to get to it.

Is this speculation, a conspiracy theory, or a revelation of facts?

Michael Goldsworthy bases his unusual and fascinating book on a prophecy, legends, views written by others, and speculations. He takes the prophecy of a British monk who lived between 450 and 750 CE, Melkin, and interprets it to say that the New Testament Joseph of Arimathea was a relative of Jesus who left Israel after Jesus' death around 37 CE, and was buried in England. Joseph, the prophet reveals, brought jars that contain the blood and sweat of Jesus, which were buried with him. Joseph is interred in the Isles of Avalon where the legendary King Arthur is buried. Melkin predicts that Joseph's tomb will be discovered, opened, and Jesus' remains revealed.

While discussing Melkin's prophecy, Goldsworthy explores and analyses the use of the burial area and its environs in Neolithic times, the stories of King Arthur, the king's connection to pyramids and markers in England, Templers, Holy Grail, Shroud of Turin, St. Michael, biblical times and prophecies, the future as a result of Melkin's prophecy, and many other subjects.

Some readers may consider Goldsworthy's book pure speculation, and either reject it or revel in it as an interesting drama. Others will delight in seeing it as a kind of conspiracy theory. Still others will feel that the book is eye-opening.

Christianity's Foothold In Britain

Mr Goldsworthy is an Englishman and the physical locales that he concentrates on are in England encompassed around the persons of Joseph of Arimathaea, Jesus, His mother Mary, certain of His disciples and King Arthur. His quest also attempts to answer these few questions: "What is the relationship between Neolithic works dotted around the British landscape and those who built the many churches on pre-existing pagan sites? What were the megalithic builders trying to achieve and how was it that our church fathers had an understanding of their arcane knowledge? Did medieval church builders have an understanding of their predecessors' geometric and astrological knowledge? Who was St. Michael to have any link with the longest ley line in Britain? Where is Jesus buried? Who was Joseph of Arimathaea and is he buried in Britain? Where is the fabled island of Iclis located? Is there any connection between Iclis and the Isle of Avalon?

This book is for those who are interested in the archeology and history of England and probably more directed towards Christian and Jewish influences from the time of Jesus' crucifixion. This not light reading, but probably would save hours and hours of research for those like-minded archeologists and/or historians as it would appear that the author has already performed this major task. Throughout the book, he cites his information and also its contradictions with other information set forth. I read it on my e-book Kindle, but if I were investing my time in like research, I would purchase the paperback, which would be easier to work with, although having to pay the English price for it would almost make it prohibitive except for a sincere historian.

Chapter 18: The Consequences of the Unveiling of History: "What is the outcome of such an investigation and how are we to be benefited, now that we are to be made cognizant that mankind is part of a Divine Plan? The answer to which is `much and in every way' as St. Paul answered ..." This is the opinion of the author and I concur.

Atrevido y raro

Es un libro escrito de manera poco ortodoxa, si esperas una narración, continuidad y lógica, este no es el libro para ti. En cambio si buscas algo diferente y que sea un reto, no debes dejar de leerlo. Es una cosa extraña pero fascinante.
