Fascinating and beautifully researched

An intricately researched and beautifully illustrated book, And did those feet by Michael Goldsworthy takes as it's driving force the poet William Blake's words, made famous in Parry's anthem Jerusalem. Did Jesus' feet indeed walk on England's green and pleasant land? And if he did once dwell here, what might he have left behind to be found in the future?
The author, in his own words, "attempts to elucidate the relationships between certain established fabricated commonly held beliefs," tying together ley lines, Arthurian legend, Biblical prophecy and even the Turin Shroud--plus the English Christmas carol "I saw three ships" which I always used to wonder about. His statistical and geometrical analyses leave me wanting more detail, but that probably says more about my background than the author's book. Ancient documents are transcribed, transliterated and translated in extraordinary detail, and any reader curious about how truth turns into myth and legend should find a wealth of understanding here. Authors in search of material for the next Da Vinci Code should be delighted by this author's carefully analyzed and well-presented research. And curious seekers of the Holy Grail, following the footsteps of saints and angels, will find much to enjoy.
Proposing intriguing answers to such questions as "What is the Grail and who does it serve?" or "What is Time?", bringing together Joseph of Arimathea, the history of tin-mining in Devon and Cornwall, and the angles of Egyptian pyramids, including a fascinating analysis of the science and archeology behind the Turin Shroud, and showing an honest willingness to reject as myth that which can't withstand his research, the author provides invaluable insights into the way arguments are developed and critiqued, and the way historical truth can be sought for and discovered.
I particularly enjoyed the tin-mining research, the analysis of translation and mistranslation of documents, and the insights into medieval church politics (worthy of Pillars of the Earth). The language is sometimes odd with complex sentence structures complementing complex analysis, and the book is a slow heavy read. But the illustrations are beautifully chosen and presented, and the text provides a great resource for ideas, even for readers who might end up disagreeing with the author's conclusions.
I'd love to see the print version of this book with its sumptuous images, but, for the sake of price, I probably recommend the e-version. Even on my elderly kindle the pictures were all pretty clear.
Disclosure: I received an ecopy from the author and promised an honest review. I'm just sorry it took so long to get to it.

Is this speculation, a conspiracy theory, or a revelation of facts?

Michael Goldsworthy bases his unusual and fascinating book on a prophecy, legends, views written by others, and speculations. He takes the prophecy of a British monk who lived between 450 and 750 CE, Melkin, and interprets it to say that the New Testament Joseph of Arimathea was a relative of Jesus who left Israel after Jesus' death around 37 CE, and was buried in England. Joseph, the prophet reveals, brought jars that contain the blood and sweat of Jesus, which were buried with him. Joseph is interred in the Isles of Avalon where the legendary King Arthur is buried. Melkin predicts that Joseph's tomb will be discovered, opened, and Jesus' remains revealed.
While discussing Melkin's prophecy, Goldsworthy explores and analyses the use of the burial area and its environs in Neolithic times, the stories of King Arthur, the king's connection to pyramids and markers in England, Templers, Holy Grail, Shroud of Turin, St. Michael, biblical times and prophecies, the future as a result of Melkin's prophecy, and many other subjects.
Some readers may consider Goldsworthy's book pure speculation, and either reject it or revel in it as an interesting drama. Others will delight in seeing it as a kind of conspiracy theory. Still others will feel that the book is eye-opening.

Christianity's Foothold In Britain

Mr Goldsworthy is an Englishman and the physical locales that he concentrates on are in England encompassed around the persons of Joseph of Arimathaea, Jesus, His mother Mary, certain of His disciples and King Arthur. His quest also attempts to answer these few questions: "What is the relationship between Neolithic works dotted around the British landscape and those who built the many churches on pre-existing pagan sites? What were the megalithic builders trying to achieve and how was it that our church fathers had an understanding of their arcane knowledge? Did medieval church builders have an understanding of their predecessors' geometric and astrological knowledge? Who was St. Michael to have any link with the longest ley line in Britain? Where is Jesus buried? Who was Joseph of Arimathaea and is he buried in Britain? Where is the fabled island of Iclis located? Is there any connection between Iclis and the Isle of Avalon?
This book is for those who are interested in the archeology and history of England and probably more directed towards Christian and Jewish influences from the time of Jesus' crucifixion. This not light reading, but probably would save hours and hours of research for those like-minded archeologists and/or historians as it would appear that the author has already performed this major task. Throughout the book, he cites his information and also its contradictions with other information set forth. I read it on my e-book Kindle, but if I were investing my time in like research, I would purchase the paperback, which would be easier to work with, although having to pay the English price for it would almost make it prohibitive except for a sincere historian.
Chapter 18: The Consequences of the Unveiling of History: "What is the outcome of such an investigation and how are we to be benefited, now that we are to be made cognizant that mankind is part of a Divine Plan? The answer to which is `much and in every way' as St. Paul answered ..." This is the opinion of the author and I concur.
