Perhaps more than any other player in the history of chess, Jose Raoul Capablanca was noted for his ability to cut through the complexities of modern chess theory and find the winning line in grandmaster tournament play. Capablanca was often called the greatest natural chess player of all time. His clarity of vision, his simplicity and precision of style were legendary. Here, in these twelve lectures originally delivered by short-wave radio to a Latin American audience shortly before his death in 1942, the qualities that made Capablanca one of the game's uniquely great masters are reflected in a timeless legacy of chess wisdom. His observations on the fundamental principles of sound chess thinking are expressed so clearly and simply that a novice can follow them; yet they touch on such profoundly important underlying themes that the most advanced player will benefit by absorbing them. In fact, these lectures reveal that much of Capablanca's supposedly instinctive genius for unraveling highly complex situations over the board consisted of a deeper and sounder understanding of the basic principles of endgame strategy (and the ability to see the endgame structure foreshadowed during the tactical maneuvering of the middle game) than that possessed by any other player of his time. Last Lectures contains Capablanca's chess “instinct” preserved for a later generation. Over and over again he stresses the vital importance of knowing how to play the endings. He gives simple rules of proper endgame play many of which he says are often overlooked by top flight masters. He shows how to recognize the winning elements of the commonest endings: Rook and Pawn, Bishop vs. Knight. He gives his analysis of the relative value of the pieces. Even in this era of exhaustive analysis of the openings, there is wisdom and profit to be gained from his chapter on the Ruy Lopez. Perhaps the greatest pleasure for the modern player, whether he is a beginner or an expert, in reading Last Lectures will come from Capablanca's lively anecdotes and strongly expressed opinions about his contemporaries. Using their play as examples for his observations on universal chess truths, Capablanca rates (and sometimes rakes) Morphy, Steinitz, Emanuel Lasker, Nimzovch, Alekhine, Reshevsky, Frank Marshall and other chess immortals. About the Author
Jose Capablanca was World Chess Champion from 1921 to 1927. He was born on 19 November 1888 in Havana, Cuba. His wife, Olga Capablanca, was a Russian princess although he said she knew nothing about chess. She was his second wife and he was her second husband. She was born Olga Evgenyevna Choubaroff on 23 September 1898 in Tbilisi, Georgia. Olga met her second husband, Jose Capablanca, in 1934 at a function given by the Cuban Consulate in New York. He was apparently immediately attracted to her and pursued her for a long time before she finally agreed to be married to him. They married in New York on October 20, 1938. When Capablanca was four years old, he learned to play chess just by watching his father play. His father was surprised when he corrected an illegal move, so his father played him a game and the child won the first game. When he was five, his father took him to the chess club. It was discovered that the players at the club were unable to beat him at queen odds. On March 8, 1942 Capablanca collapses at the Manhattan Chess Club and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead at the age of 53. Olga later married Admiral Joseph James Jocko Clark. Admiral Joseph James "Jocko" Clark, USN (November 12, 1893 – July 13, 1971) was an admiral in the United States Navy, who commanded aircraft carriers during World War II. He also commanded the 7th fleet during the Korean war. He had a ship the USS Clark named after him which Olga christened at the launching on March 24, 1979. Olga Capablanca died on April 24, 1994 at age 95. She bequeathed the entire archives of Jose Raoul Capablanca to the Manhattan Chess Club.

Kindergarten-Grade 2–In this fourth Jeffrey Bones mystery, the young detective visits the museum with his grandpa and Grandpa's friend Sally. They explore the dinosaur exhibit and then move on to the gift shop, where Grandpa buys Jeffrey a blue plastic T-rex. After a snack, they go to the moon exhibit, where the boy realizes that he no longer has his dinosaur. The plot and narration are simple and straightforward, and attentive children will find it easy to solve the mystery of the missing toy. Bones is a junior parallel to Adler's Cam Jansen but without the photographic memory. He is reminiscent of Nate the Great and, similarly, he narrates his own tale. Appealing cartoon caricatures are colorful and infused with humorous details like funky clothing, groovy glasses, and exaggerated expressions. Children new to the series will be clued in to Jeffrey's sleuthing powers by his announcement to a fierce-looking set of pterodactyl bones that he, too, is Bones, and he solves mysteries. The mystery itself is pretty slim (Bones' plastic dinosaur goes missing in the cafeteria), but thanks to the eye-popping, often comic acrylic illustrations, kids will keep reading, find out a few facts about dinosaurs, and be treated to a satisfying display of Bones' deductive powers. This is a great beginner mystery book for a 4 or 5 year old.....interactive, as you read to your child, begin asking "Why did that happen or what do you think will happen next?" Any child that loves dinosaurs, one step beyond the "story" book....no violence, nothing inappropriate!

Culture of Wood Review

This book was recommended to me and I ordered it because the other reviews I read were quite good. This is a beautiful book. I traveled in Japan and saw a few of the things that are topics addressed in the book. When I saw these things, I did not always understand the background behind them. This book presents that, particularly for the architectural topics (bridges and temples, etc.). While it speaks of these wooden things and how they are made, the technical aspects of their fabrication are not dwelt upon extensively. The title of the book is quite appropriate. It is a discussion of the way that wood and the appreciation of fine wooden things weave their ways through Japanese culture. The topical elements (wooden objects) dealt with are generally held in high cultural esteem and enjoy almost a kind of reverence. The book deals with how similar items have been made historically and introduces artisans and craftsmen that engage in these activities today. It describes their work with grace. It is a gentle book and a peaceful read. It is not a book to necessarily read cover-to-cover but is enjoyable on a topic by topic basis.

Fighting against the Tide

In this modern age of plastics and exotic metal alloys along with mass production, the idea of creating a comb out of wood, or small storage boxes out of thin wooden slats, or carving a thin-walled bowl, seems quaint and even silly. We would expect furniture woodworkers and carpentry in constructing houses, but splitting wood by hand and trimming with small hand saws question efficiency. However, in modern Japan there are still handfuls of artisans engaged in such and similar crafts. They fight the tide of modernization by being the preservationists of Buddhist and Shinto temples, monuments and shrines, and tea houses. They also produce those traditional utensils still valued for form and craft.

This fine illustated book honors the cottage industry and its aging craftmen, who maintain the skills and techniques and still train apprentices. Anyone familiar with Chinese interlocking wooden puzzles will appreciate how large buildings were and still today are constructed entirely out of wood, without nails. We see in detail how this is done, from securing the necessary timber, to its aging in lumber yards, to carving and fitting. From bridges and buildings to wooden dolls and wooden sandals, to musical instruments and game boards, we learn the complex techniques and soon appreciate the patience and craftsmanship. Japanese design, both ancient and modern, is renown for its elegance. This book, a survey and sampling, gives us greater understanding. We also discover that these works and projects in wood are expensive, due in part to the rarity and specialization of such skills and the intricate steps of labor and the time required. The book would be of interest to woodworkers, those interested in Japanese arts and crafts, and anyone who loves wood.

A great novel and far above the movie

Forrest Gump is a superb novel, and it is unfortunate that most people are more familiar with the movie, and think of Forrest Gump mainly as a "movie character." This is very unfortunate, just as if "Tom Sawyer" or "Gulliver's Travels" were widely known as just "good movies" while the original books were confined to obscurity.

The movie was good, and deserving of the awards and accolades it received. However, it is not by any stretch a substitute for the book. Forrest Gump is a somewhat different character in the book than in the movie, and the Forrest Gump of the novel experiences numerous adventures that the movie does not even hint at. To do the book justice, perhaps it should have been adapted into four or five separate movies.

Then again, another way to do the book justice is to just read it.

For many reasons, I consider this the last of the series. Fleming didn't finish "The Man With The Golden Gun" and was ill when writing the rough draft that was left behind at his death. It was simply awful, especially given Cmdr. Fleming's own experience with British Intelligence.
"You Only Live Twice" finds Bond in a slump, unable to recover from the murder of his wife of only a few hours on their honeymoon. He's been eased back into work, but has literally made a mess of 2 missions and M is seriously considering revoking his Double-O status.
The Service consulting physician is fond of 007, and suggests an alternative. He states a man of Bond's psychological makeup cannot rise unless he is challenged against overwhelming odds, so he suggests giving him a literally impossible mission to accomplish and free reign to do it.
Unlike the usual assassination assignments, Bond is asked to travel to Japan and make contact with the head of the Japanese Intelligence Service, a mysterious man of which little is known other than his name; Tiger Tanaka. This is to be primarily a diplomatic mission, and he is to offer to trade British Intelligence resources & information in exchange for the treasure trove of Japan's Russian spy network. It is thought highly unlikely Japan will work with the British and will be a coup if Bond pulls it off. Bond accepts, and begins his adventure to the Far East; another routine assignment with more than meets the eye, scores settled with Ernst Blofeld, ninja training, and a second chance at life.

Bond in Japan

Most people are familiar with the films of James bond, agent 007, licensed to kill, but the novels written by Ian Fleming can be very different from the books that provide their names. Certainly this is the case in "You only Live Twice." Both the film and the book are set in Japan but beyond that they part ways quickly.

In the book James Bond is nearly finished. 8 months after the murder of his wife Tracy at the end of "On Her Majesties Secret Service" he has gone from M's best man to the dregs of the service. M, considering his dismissal is prevailed upon to give Bond one last chance.

Bond is promoted out of his beloved 00 section and transferred to the diplomatic branch with the code number 7777, and given a near impossible mission. He is go to Japan and convince the head of the Japanese Secret Service to share with Great Britain their decrypts of top secret Soviet messages. The problem is that post WW2 the United States views Japan as its private preserve and does not like poachers.

The rather more serious problem is that Bond does not have much to bargain with and when it is quickly revealed that the Japanese are not interested in his one bargaining chip he is left with very little to go on.What he has is his own life and skills, and in return for these magic decrypts, Japan requires Bond to kill a Swiss botanist named Dr. Shatterhand, a man of evil intent and deed who, for political reasons the Japanese police cannot move against but a gaijan whose arrest if he fails cannot be tied to the government? This is acceptable.

This is actually one of Fleming's weaker outings for Bond. Although he is in full force in his pacing and plotting and character development, part of what is missing is the setting. During the Second World War, Fleming was deeply involved in the planning and control of British and American espionage units and his writing carries the flavor of how things really work, a far cry form the gadgets and gizmos of the films,

However part of the charm of the books is his descriptions of the places where Bond's missions take him. Fleming knew France, Jamaica and the United States well and this carries over in his descriptions of the places. The reader truly gets a feel of the casinos, the beaches, the hotels and the streets. But Fleming did not know Japan and this is reflected in his writing, details that are common in other books are lacking here.

If this is the first Bond book you've read, it is highly enjoyable but if you are well familiar with the books by Fleming, this will be a little disappointing. James bond is still in effect with all his prowess but the world he is moving in, compared with earlier books, is empty and unfulfilling.

Vance is fast becoming the voice of James Bond on audio books and does a masterful job of working his way through Fleming's rich cast of charatcers.

A Right-brainers Nightmare

I purchased this book several months ago and I have been slowly integrating into my work with special Ed children. Lots of good, solidly backed information that fits so well with Occupational Therapy in the Classroom. However, this book is not friendly towards the right-brained readers like myself. I had to read the muscle-checking section 20 times before I figured it out, and I am still a little confused. Three other OTs and two PT also struggled with her descriptions. I think this will be the downfall of this otherwise wonderful book.

This book is a manual for identifying how you and those around you use their brains. This book is directed more toward educators and people who work with differently-abled individuals. As a home schooling parent this book has helped me identify how each of my children learn. This allows me to teach them in a manner that presents the information in a manner that is easier for them to understand and process, alleviating the frustration of not comprehending. The book gives you insight (and practical application)into how to make the brain hemispheres work together to accomplish a task or goal. The importance of this comes to light when working with children who are dealing with comprehension issues in reading or who are frustrated by language arts. There are methods given in the book for teaching around mental roadblocks and enhancing brain integration. Great information.

Very grateful

I am so, because Carla Hannaford opened a new door for me, with this work. It is the first of its kind I read, and it gives stability to many fragmented theories I had started to map following my personal curiosity. Not only that, of course, but much more substantiated insights helped me and will help me trace profiles and broaden my understanding of how interestingly varied we are as a people. I will read more from this dedicated, open minded and precious teacher. A suggestion: look into books about the thymus gland and integrate the two realities for an amazing experience. Carla mentions John Diamond, whom I coincidentally read right before this book and I warmly recommend.

A Must Read

Once again Chad Fowler has created a book which should be a staple in any developer's arsenal. Chad's recipes are able to span all skill levels from just beginning to seasoned pro. I would consider myself an intermediate to experienced rails developer so this book reinforced my basic knowledge as well as taught me some neat tricks. Even if you think there's nothing more you can get from reading these kinds of books, there is probably a little tip which you could glean from reading Chad's work. I'd recommend this book to those who really enjoy reading really well written code and those who are curious into the thinking of one of the top rails developers.

The author focuses largely on what can theoretically be done within Rails and not on what should be done in a real world application. A good 20% of these recipes are already well documented practices that are already listed on the current RubyOnRails.org. Worse though there are too many recipes that are borderline dangerous, violating fundamental design principles such as S.O.L.I.D, Law of Demeter and the Principle of Least Surprise.

Many recipes highlight their "advantages" only in form of improved readability. Downsides of recipes are almost never mentioned, creating the impression to the novice programmer that each and every one of them is a good idea. Unfortunately the consequences of what happens under the hood in terms of disk seeks, memory and CPU are entirely missing, leaving the reader guessing on how to make intelligent engineering tradeoffs.

I personally recommend reading the "Database Recipes" chapter, as well as the following 6 recipes:
- Create custom form builder
- Test your outgoing Mailers
- Test across multiple controllers
- Create test data with factories
- Automate work with Rake tasks
- Debug and Explore your application with the ruby-debug gem

All in all, out of the 70 recipes there are too few worthwhile reading.

Effective recipes and eloquent expression of ideas - buy now!

I'm still only a short way through this fairly hefty tome of knowledge, but I'm already impressed at what "made the cut". Just the recipe covering how to use multiple databases (Recipe 3, 'Connect to Multiple Databases') is worth its weight in gold and I've learned a bunch from many other snippets. Overall the coverage is wide-ranging, the full gamut from Controller through UI, and the whole of Part VI ('Big-Picture Recipes') seems awesomely useful.

I would strongly recommend any learner or serious practitioner of Ruby on Rails purchase this book. You won't be disappointed!
